Newpipe itself also stops playing when the display goes dark. But it works when configured to use an external video player, like MediaMonkey or whatever music player you're using.

@Jantje19 Well, that's easier than expected. Still, I prefer using Newpipe as it allows to switch apps.

Did you ever try the FF browser on Android, opened a youtube video and switched to another app?
Try other browsers. It is not entirely Google's fault. It is also your fault due to you being lazy to test it on other browsers as well. -
@demortes Literally EVERYTHING is on YouTube. Most music isn't on other services.

@PrivateGER I've never run into that. All artist I want is on pandora or Spotify or Google play music.

@demortes There are a lot of audio playlists with still images on yt. Since the content is available in the form/compilation I enjoy, there is no reason to switch to another service.

@demortes I assume Youtube recognizes still images or uses proper video encoding with variable bitrate to mitigate this. Also, data consumption is not an issue for me when on WiFi.

Now we are into something I don't understand a lot about. Video codecs. Do they do differential updates in the transmission? -
@demortes Yes, they do. I believe every X frames, there is another full frame (depending on codec and configuration)

It all makes sense now...
You know how fucking Youtube on Android stops playing when you turn off the display? A few years ago you could prevent that from happening by using Youtube from an obscure browser, but this doesn't work anymore today. You're forced to deal with battery drain and not being able to switch apps when all you want to do is listen to some music via Youtube.
So this is what those moronic douchebags at Google thought:
Let's stop the playback as soon as the display goes dark and prevent our users from doing anything against it. They will probably be pissed off. But this is better for us because... well... who cares, let's just fuck with them.
Anyone knows a workaround?
