What is the best PC spec for development?

Things I mostly work on: Node frameworks, React Native and some Java and C++ (QT)

I know that even a dual core is enough for this but it takes a while even for a webpack build to complete in my current build.

I would highly recommend an SSD (Samsung EVOs are good, although ADATA are a cheaper and decent quality alternative). Any decent CPU will do you good, such as an Intel Core i5 or an AMD FX-line (or better).

Other than that, a decently priced motherboard and some good RAM (Corsair or Kingston) and you'll be all set! 😀

Well I do a lot of emulation, I have a high end laptop:
3.6GHz i7
16GB DDR3
GTC880M 8GB dedicated
But from experience, if you're just doing some code and deploying/running it on a server:
i3 2.5GHz
6GB DDR3 should be good

alright let me fix both of those comments.. although @ToshNeox is mostly correct.
I recommend an i5 minimum, stay away from AMD in my opinion. 8 gb of ram minimum. definitely an SSD, get a Samsung evo, it's worth it. the SSD is one thing to not skimp on.

if you are building a computer, make it in PC part picked and post it in the comments. if you're getting a laptop, try to stick to Dell or HP. they last the longest and are top of the market for now. I am a developer and it tech, I work with this stuff everyday and through my business I build a lot of computers.

what's your budget like? if I get some time I'll build you a desktop on pcpartpicker for you to look at that is under or equal to your budget. pertaining you're not looking for a laptop that is

@danner26 not trying to get into a flame war but in my experience Hp and Dell are two of the worst laptops in terms of longevity and ruggedness.

I personally always chose Thinkpads for PCs. Those things are built to take a beating.

The most important is SSD and thank me when you use ReSharper or any JetBrains IDE. It doesn't matter what processor or gpu or how much memory you have. If you have an awesome i7, 12gb ram but still using a HDD (that's me, the idiot), you'll be crying all day long.

corrwct, but if you have a core duo and 2gb of ram and an ssd, you'll still be crying when you want to use chrome and compile at the same time lol but you are right. thats why I said don't skimp on the SSD. very important my friend @zzyzy

@danner26 hahaha true. But because nowadays 4gb of ram is the standard just like how 2gb of ram is the standard few years ago. If u have a 4gb memory, i3 or i5 with a ssd, it's still better than an i7, 12gb ram with a hdd. I'm crying now because meteor is slow as hell.

@zzyzy why don't you buy an SSD and upgrade it ?? I don't use anything but SSD's anymore. my gaming computer has 3 500s. my MBP has a 500. and my surface is a 256. can't live without them anymore lol when I service clients with HDD's I want to throw the computer out the freaking window

@danner26 mostly because it's too expensive for me hahah as I'm still a student. Not to mention the exchange rate (1usd to ~4myr). Planning to get one after I land on a job.

@zzyzy I'm still a student too.. but I work at my university and own a small business so I have extra income.. but I'm sure you know, once you get one you'll be so happy lmao

@danner26 I suggested AMD just because they can give a decent level of performance for a much better price tag (I use an FX-8350, and it definitely does the job). Same with SSDs - EVOs are a tad bit more expensive than ADATA, and while I've never used an ADATA drive personally, they seem to be decent for the price

I do agree though - anything half decent with an SSD will fly 😄

Hey guys thanks, I do have an SSD already. It's a Samsung evo as well. I have 8GB DDR4 but my processor is Pentium G4500 which is a huge bottleneck.

My budget is around £1000. Thought about a Macbook first then I thought might just build a PC again.

My main concern lies between Core i5 and core i7. I am thinking if I should get a core i7 or just core i5 will be fine.

Looking at a PCIe NVME ssd right now. Might get one.

RAM I am definitely getting 16gb.

@tahnik honestly you don't need to waste the money on the PCIe card since the SSD should be fine. but if you have the extra cash, go for it. if you can afford the i7 get it. it'll be future proofed. but if you need to save a little the i5, 16gb ram, SSD will do just fine for you !

@danner26 Yeah, I will ditch the i7. It's overkill tbh.

I just can't resist the PCIe SSD. 2k read speed OMG!
