To be honest, as much as I like the idea, it's pretty much irrelevant. If we're within a simulation, then we are also a simulation.
Therefore, we are as real as the universe we live in, but only in relative terms.
A simulation can only be a simulation for somebody or something outside of it, so if we're a simulation of something that our universe exists within, we're unable to leave and unable to perceive outside of it.
For that reason, we can not be living inside a simulation by our own standards, as any simulation which we can comprehend as such must exist within our universe and relatively speaking, it is as real as its containing universe.
It's basically Plato's idea of the Demiurge replicating perfect Forms within an imperfect universe while being imperfect himself.
