OMG why are you still using slapd?! I remember how every update was a breaking change; ditched that shit back in like 2010.
There are lots of other much better directories. You ever look at 389 Directory Server?

Maybe I find time to migrate to 389.
The reason why I started using it in the first place: When I started using it, I had no idea of LDAP and comparison of servers (I knew Active Directory exists but I don't use a Windows server) but I a central user database for multiple services is nice - using an LDAP server seemed the way to go. The most introductions to this topic either cover OpenLDAP's slapd or Active Directory. As the latter was no choice for me I ended up with slapd.
