tomorrow i will (finally) get a new teammate,

was working solo for 8 weeks now and in 2 months i will become parent and will take some time off

i wonder what's the best way for onboarding

i think i will try to do some pair programming until he gets the basic architecture and feels safe enough to work on his own

what's your experience on this, best onboarding you had?

The best of on-boarding a developer can have in my point of view is:

    1. A knowledge base: The basic knowledge of how to do basic stuff but you do it differently at your company, put it there.

    2. Pair-programming for the first couple days, but not for full day.

    3. Let him start with small project to build his knowledge and make him familiar with your tools.

    4. Involve him in meetings.

As a intern (iOS development in very small startup) I was thrown in the deep end, with only 1 developer who could help me in my task. Who worked only 2 days a week, 1of which remotely on saturday.

Altough it initially really sucked, after some time this really helped me, as I knew how most things worked.

What didn't help, was the non existing documentation of the db, api and the mobile (Android + iOS) apps...

I actually liked it. Because I learned a lot during this period, not only writing code but also my communication improved but also my communication skills, due to the non existing documentation
