I've bought my new laptop (vostro 5471 with ips, 8250u, 8gb ram, 256gb ssd) and it came with ubuntu.
I was keen to give linux a shot but I just got frustrated and installed windows. Now I feel dirty on the inside. Any tips to get comfortable with linux? Distro recommendations are also welcome.

There's no short cut. Try it out, fail and learn. Repeat till comfortable. If that style of learning doesn't work frmornyou, Linux honestly isn't a good fit.

@hashedram I'm probably going to try multiple distro's in VM's. I mainly wanted distro recommendations.

@theKarlisK the frustration came from being accustomed to my software suite and I didn't have time to find alternatives because I needed it up and running quickly, because I'm traveling with it tomorrow.

Probably giving vm's a shot with stuff that's not ubuntu

@DjSall Ubuntu or mint to start out I suppose but it really doesn't matter much. Linux culture is one of searching and learning stuff whichever distribution you try.

@theKarlisK I was looking at mint and fedora for testing

i always enjoy fedora on pc and centos on server

sometimes i try the dark side, arch and slack mostly, but i'm too lazy... :D and actually i really like redhat-style distros.

I'm a windows lover, but was pretty happy with debian OS.

Linux is king of you wanna do php/python - shit just works!

    ... for everything else, there's Windows :)

In order to give a proper suggestion we need to know what you're planning on using the computer for.

I'm a fan of vanilla Debian lately, Ubuntu is based on Debian so many things will be the same for both. There's certainly a learning curve with Linux but once you get over the hump you'll love it.
