One reason for tons of android permissions in simple apps.
I recently installed an app that asked for like 12 permissions. The app obviously needed 2 of them. No more.
I was also right next to the guy that made the app and asked him, wtf?!
The answer:
"We based out app on some other one that needs all that and even though we use just a couple of it's features we can't be bothered to remove the others from the code."
Fuck this guy. Or whoever ordered him to do that.14 -
I've been fortunate enough to work with a lot of awesome people early into my career.
At the company I worked where I met @trogus, I became friends with a few people, including Tim, that I think were my favorites. It was a really fun bunch and though it may sound immature, but a lot of the times it felt like we were kids so for me coming out of college it was awesome.
There's so many stories from working with that bunch that come to mind for me. One of my best friends there was this guy "Dirty Devin." He started around the same time I did. When I first met him he seemed really boring and professional. After getting to know him, and after he'd been at the company for a few weeks, his actual personality started to show and he was like a child (in the best way possible) and was absolutely hilarious/made the work place a blast.
Our office had a ping pong table and neither Dirty Devin or I had ever really played. We started playing against each other and we both very quickly got really good.
I also met a guy named Botond (he's the one in the photo). He was very similar to Dirty Devin. Lots of crazy stories but the photo is actually a really funny one - we both got to work a few minutes early one day. And we couldn't get into the office. We kept trying to enter the door code and it wouldn't work. We kept joking that we must both be fired. Turned out that they had fired someone the night before and didn't bother to send out the new door code :/
And of course, Tim. I think we clicked pretty early on and had the same friend group at the company.2 -
So Python doesn't have switch-case statement... I feel so dirty having to use multiple if-elif-else

Although she hates HTML, I had my girlfriend try to (re)create some kind of interface as a challenge. She remade the Mirror's Edge Catalyst menu - and she did well, I guess. (ofc her code is dirty and stuff - and it's far from responsive, but damn it looks smooth xD)14

3 years, part time, $0.
I used to volunteer my time to an old text based rpg, handling code changes, sysadmin maintenance and the likes - back when those were a thing in the mid 2000's and money wasn't my issue in life - free for them, experience for me - win win!
Was something to get my hands dirty back in the day and contribute to an active community, but since then that place has shut down and been disbanded.24 -
I loved the idea of making computers do the dirty job for me.
Jokes on me, I learned I had to do dirty job for them to do the dirty job for me.1 -

I really hate when I have to help a coworker and then when I need to use their keyboard. is dirty AF, really disgusting! like c'mon, how is that I need to tell them that their keyboard could use a bit of cleaning13

No matter how much product owners claim "bugs have priority over anything else", "we value high quality structured code", and "we do test driven development"...
...Once a big client wants a feature to be developed before they sign up, dirty code will be written from napkin specs, and that code will always be refractored "soon".4 -
Probably the jankiest fan that I've ever built 😂
I just need it to not sweat gallons on the bus and needed it to be done quick and dirty to not miss the bus so meh.. kinda curious about the looks that I'll get for using this thing to cool myself though 🙃5 -

I: No.
Drunken neighbor: I know i do, but i want a girl. This is my problem.
I: Go find her.
Drunken neighbor: I can't, i'm black.
I: It's not the reason.
Drunken neighbor: It is.
I: Reason si you are dirty, drunken pig.
Drunken neighbor: You are racist!

Front End vs Backend.
Today is my annual 'clean your keyboard' day. Anything used as much as a keyboard is bound to get dirty. Keep your gear clean kids.6 -

Confession.
Got invited to a company party by a friend. I forgot they worked for Comcast. Realized when I got there it was a Comcast sponsored event. Got told on the way not to engage in any anti-Comcast rants at the event.
Couldn't really backout, so went anyway. Feeling guilty, dirty and like a complete sellout.12 -

Sometimes dirty code is more efficient than clean code.
If features get dropped frequently and requirements change every few days, writing best-practices, tested code is wasted time. Learned that in my first job where I thought the other devs were all bad. Until I realized their bad code pays my salary, and my clean code takes more time to develop.6 -
Regular expressions is like a condom, it's safe, combat tested and works most of the time.
But if you use it too much it gets dirty quickly.3 -

Has anyone looked at the linux kernel 1.0?
I am amazed with this! And the comments are priceless
e.g:
tcp.c

return(~d+1);
buffer.c
* 14.02.92: changed it to sync dirty buffers a bit: better performance
* when the filesystem starts to get full of dirty blocks (I hope).

I feel dirty. I just talked someone into buying a Macbook Air.

I don't get it when people (developers) complain that git is hard and unintuitive to use.
Most of these people use some GUI client to do the dirty work. I've found every Git GUI client that I've tried tedious.
Does anyone relate?15 -
Food and computers.
Sorry for the fat people as well but i think those is legit.
I am sitting next to this friend of mine in class. She is a bit big. Anyhow.
She opens her laptop and i see her screen. Its dirty. But by dirty i mean fucking dirty. Like brow transparent circle like things all over.
I`m like: “shiiiet, whats that on your screen”.
She: “i am not really sure”.
2 days layer in another class we sit together again and she looks at me with a smile.
She: “look my screen is clean. It was dirty because sometimes o sit in bed and eat chicken then type on my keyboard,so when i close my computer the keys touch the screen and voiiiila!”
Me: “..... Wow”
She was quite proud she had elucidated the problem and did not really understand the meaning of my wow.4 -
Never ever open a computer while breathing...
I got a ticket to fix a computer from the production line that was turning itself off...
When I opened it, a dark dust from hell came right into my lungs... There were more dust in there than I've ever seen in my entire life... Combined...
I'm still sneezing 3 hours later, and a few black spots keep coming out with everything else...4 -
Probably the last person to enter this, but fuck, it's done! Somewhat, but not totally inspired by this week's theme, I went to Ikea today and bought this brand-new beauty, along with a rug and small LED strip and OH. MY. GOD.
Technically didn't clean it off because it has never been dirty before. More pics in the comments. Holy shit I love it.8 -
So you're sitting on your crappy Win 10 and whine about that piece of shit, huh? You had five fucking years to come up with a plan, but noooo. Instead, you put your thumb up your asshole and hoped MS would change ways. Only that they didn't, and that's because they bet on people like YOU, and now you have to suck your dirty thumb.30

The initial version of DOS was called QDOS – Quick and Dirty Operating System. The bullshit they tel you about DiSk oPeRaTinG sYsTeM is a lie. It was renamed when MS acquired it.7

People with dirty, greasy keyboards and mice. They obviously never wash their hands and all that disgusting gunk builds up around where they touch.
The feeling when you use someone else's mouse, and you can feel the lumpy texture of the sticky grey filth on it.
Clean your desk equipment occasionally, people. Also, wash your hands properly after using the bathroom, and it won't even be much of a problem.8 -
Needed to convert a collection of .avi videos to .mp4. Online converters only allow 1-2 videos at a time, with slow uploads, so no option.
Can't find a program that quickly fulfills my needs. Interesting ... 🤔
Look for python and a quick and dirty solution, ffmpeg and subprocess it shall be then.
Install ffmpeg, run subprocess with ffmpeg, put it inside a for loop, iterate over all videos with their respective number. Done.
3 lines of code, saved some time.
It's great to be a developer (sometimes).😏16 -
It's been a while I haven't check devRant. Been very busy and spending a lot of time with my teammates; knowing each other since we transferred in one room and can't avoid joining the small dirty talks with my colleagues since I'm the only rose among the thorns. :/
So anyways, I missed being in here. I missed ranting about my boss and coworkers, swearing a lot and following your rants. Got to randomly check my notif and catch up with you, guys! ;)4 -
1.5 hours of cleaning my mechanical keyboard after 2 years of usage. Kill me!!! But damn daskeaboard looks sexy when clean5

I started a project at high school 7 years ago, I had no idea what's clean code or design pattern, just learn while keep coding. I eventually stopped because my code is so terrible I cannot understand it anymore.
Now, after 1 year of working, I look back those dirty codes and think it is actually not that bad. Within hours I even fixed a bug with concurrency.
I start to think, instead of learning to how to write good code, maybe I should learn how to read bad code. That's just much more practical.5 -

So there’s this SOAP api I have to use (not by choice, and not the only one i have to use) that returns a bunch of XML nodes to confirm the data sent made it and checks out - pretty standard stuff yea.
Now every once in a while it doesn’t respond (as far as I could tell) so today I wrapped a debug around the soap call, error handler and responses and threw a bunch of messages it’s way to try and force it not to respond in order to be able to put some decent error handling in place.
Well it wouldn’t fail.
100 messages .... all responses good
100 more.... all responses good
And then 100 more.... all respond with “x”, plain text not XML as expected!
Wtf is this shit!!!!!rant dirty dirty soap going insane i give up unexpected undocumented responses it’s not me... yay soap6 -
One time I took out a colleagues letter keys except the ones needed to spell freezer (in croatian) and left the message freezer on the keyboard, took the remaining keys, put them in a bottle which I filled with water and put them in the freezer overnight (left work the day before earlier than him).
A positive was that the keys were real clean. Negative was the rest of the keyboard was dirty :)
Was a good laugh, though.4 -
I’m a long time Objective-C and Swift developer...I’ve been asked to “research” a project using React Native.
It felt dirty to be writing an iOS app using JavaScript.
I’m still not sure why and how React Native is better/faster than native Swift.
Someone change my mind...11 -
Anyone else change their avatar almost daily? It feels dirty to wear the same thing everyday I think I'd start to stink...

(1) Datetimes. Seriously, fuck 'em.
(2) Everybody always thinking: Come on, that little feature is so simple. It couldn't possibly take a whole week to develop.
(3) Nobody really caring or understanding or forgetting after you've told them that if you cut corners and do something the dirty way, it adds to the effort and time needed to maintain or build new features. -
Just had to write an old-skool for loop. Index...termination condition...whole works. I feel dirty.
Bit embarrassing as someone saw me writing it, thought I was a hacker and informed the authorities. Spent the last hour being waterboarded.
We had a big laugh about it when they realized I was just fixing bugs in a legacy app.
National Security. Hilarious.10 -

A colleague had to show up for a demo in 10 minutes, and urgently needed to fix some CSS.
I told her the right way would take more than 10 minutes. The quick and dirty way was to add an `!important`.
I made her write a comment:
`// TODO: Fix this hack made for the demo dated blah blah`4 -
Web development is the worst!
I still cannot understand why it is not possible for browsers to correctly support all official specs... Exceptions here and there, dirty fix for this one, add a little margin here, hide this...

TIL if you know the password for a WIFi SSID, you can replicate it with your hardware. All devices that have credentials for that SSID will connect to yours if your signal is stronger. The encryption just needs to be the same (wpa2/wep) The underlying UUID doesn’t matter.
Not bad for a quick and dirty man-in-the-middle attack. The WiFi spec needs a bit more work.
TLS all the things!4 -
Not only is the documentation only in Chinese, but also the labels used in the components are. 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
Oh well time to get my hands dirty.3 -
Well. Fuck.
A sunny monday morning. The sun almost glimpsing over the horizon. I'm on my way to the office, taking a breath of fresh cool air. It is infused by the scent of sweet pastries.
I reach the office, but something is different. Why is the door slightly opened? Carefully I grab the door handle. I do my first step past the doorframe and wooosch. Thick and sticky stuff is running done my spine, finding it's way through my clothes. I feel so un-fucking-believably dirty in this very moment.
This should give you an impression how I felt when I had to change a DNS record in this completely broken setup for just a matter of seconds until the letsencrypt client renewed the certificate.
I'm feeling seriously dirty.1 -
Why do people eat at their work desk? This fuckety fuck is putting her sticky spoon in her mouth with some pungent shit in it. And its fucking my nose up.
They also make their workplace dirty with bits all around. You have a cafeteria for fucks sake. Get your lazy ass up there and eat.18 -

DOS is not “Disk Operating System”. DOS, aka QDOS, is “Quick and Dirty Operating System”. This is real. Google it.
Similarly, Windows CE is not “Compact Embedded”. It's “Chaotic Evil”.2 -
I think a "git commit -hide" option could be useful. To hide the author of the commit when you push dirty code.2

If you give the client a choice of:
- Quick and dirty solution which results in tech debt
- Better solution that would be cheaper in long run
They will always choose the first without fail..2 -
I gotta say I never understood owning a Roomba until my wife got me an off-brand Deebot one for my birthday. I named it “The Kraken”, as in “release the...” because it sees nothing and devours all. My kids can now rest easy because they won’t hear me complain about how the floor is always dirty and how nobody wants to vacuum but me. Now I just fire up the app, hit “Auto”, and The Kraken cleans my house. It even mops! I feel bad for the doggo, though.6
-
Do you also feel dirty when a client asks for something that completely defats the purpose of the main feature?
yet you "patch " it because "it's a big client after all" and they can't be bothered to do a simple two number addition.6 -
I have no words to describe the last meeting.
One of the project managers was putting his feet on the desk, chewing his gum with an open mouth, and playing around with his phone.
The people in the room were so tense and looks defensive, which is normal if you have dirty shoes in your direction.
Luckily I'm remote but at least I know that won't like to move to his team at any cost. -
If you throw a dirty gunk-ice-snow-mix ball into my food while I'm walking to school WHILE I AM REALLY FUCKING HUNGRY, I'm going to pour that now non-edible food onto your head, dimwit.
I don't care if your clothes were expensive or if you threw it in there accidentally. Maybe next time at least throw a non-dirty snowball, there was plenty of fresh snow.6 -
A friend of mine just called me to ask if I can help him hack an Instagram account... In my head (He's quite aware I lost my dad less than a week ago even if I was an hacker I'll expect and respect some little remorse atleast around moments like this, I would not be expected to do dirty shit at these times). (*heavy sigh here*) (*Million cause words here*) (*hung up*)2

I hate my current work with this piece of bad written legacy $hit. As 2 year old 'junior' without any code review and mentor I feel depressed. I should improve my skills at home and run away from it.
F#$ck you, corpo.3 -
Client wanted me to implement a "fix" for the site beeing to large on mobile. He had to scroll too long. I implemented a quick fix and turned the biggest list into a carousel with slick slider (awesome 5-minute-fix btw.)
But it depends on jQuery. I feel so dirty now. The sites amount of JavaScript is three times bigger now, too. Please, don't judge me. 😩2 -
Forgive me devLords, for I have sinned.
Today, I took while() loop and made it true, it was a dirty ordeal, however it's not entirely my fault, you see the api I called doesn't have a webhook of any kind and doesn't return results in real time either, you have to poll for them..... so here I am writing while(true){} to poll for results that could take seconds or even hours to finish.
😟11 -
Good fucking job you stupid fucking nutjobs of representives!
Go suck on the music corporations tiny veiny dirty cock and choke to death!1 -
When you have important not work related appointment, can't work late, suddenly tricky show stopper bug shows up, you have to do dirty hack in fifteen minutes, push to master, run out of work and hope it compiles and works and will be ready for deployement in the morning.2

Imagine a time when a colleague contributes a shitty spaghetti of non-optimized code that neither use mnemonic variables nor conventional naming of functions, and you can imagine the dark hours of maintaining it and your fingers itch to fix it but you don't have the time and the responsibility too to do it. He doesn't listen to you and you feel bad to tell this to the boss as the colleague is also a friend you've known since college and is a good person otherwise. No options seems to give peace.6

I hope one day i will stop writing dirty code to achieve a task, forget to refactor it and then struggle to use correct names for variables and methods when i need to move on other tasks.

Just left my first "here be dragon's" comment... I feel dirty.
I am required to develop using the WORST documentation, that I was told is 100% accurate, but contradicts itself, had blank parts, etc. When I emailed the creator, they fixed the parts I mentioned, but didn't proof the rest.
The math is probably all wrong, but I am working off their information and it seems to work in the one case they gave...1 -
I told you fucking moron clients doing that "little" change would be complicated and in the worst case it would end fucking up your whole spaghetti crap. A really HUGE spaghetti monster of that you aren't aware because you guys don't know a shit about coding conventions.
*Clients call me complaining about their software is broken*
-Hey, we're in serious trouble. Our users aren't being able to see the proper calculated values. Why that little change had so much side effects?
- I already told you why.
- Can you fix it asap? Our clients are complaining.
- No. Deploy an old copy of the affected modules while you give me a prudent time to refactorize that crap.
- Refactorize?
- ...
I used to work in their place, 3 years later I quit that crappy job and decided to make them my clients. I escaped from the micromanaging thing but I didn't from their ugly practices.
Anyways, I have to fix this shit asap. Money talks, at least until I can find a better client. -
HAHA FUCK YOU HR RECRUITER!!
This fucking lady tries to steal my devs while i spent a lot of blood sweat and tears raising them.
Thankfully my devs are happy with their work type, salary, and conditions. So they showed me a screenshot of her phishing attempts.
There is so much damage I can do to her, and her company as i got all the information, its very tempting.
Since its a "common" dirty and distasteful move, the most sensible course of action I can think of is public shaming. That too is common, dirty and distasteful. But im not that kind of guy.
What do you guys think, should i suck it in and let it slide or public shame her for her actions?3 -

To all the hardcore Vim users:
Why do you prefer Vim over IDEs ?
Are you faster/more efficient using Vim ?
What are it's main benefits/drawbacks in your view ?
I'm familiar with it, but nothing more than that. Usually use it just for quick and dirty edits, but that's all.
I'm seriously considering making the change to Vim and I can't explain why. Read an article once why Vim is still relevant and some features as to why that is, but I'd like to get more opinions on it.22 -
When you git cherry-pick for the first time, screw up, rebase-drop, repeat, screw up again, and end up just pasting the correct versions of the files and commiting on top of the branch.

I come into the office today and a new guy is sitting at my desk. alright, I introduce myself and explain this is my desk (btw I work in an office where some workers share a desk, me being the most senior tech the desk is reserved for me) and he gives me a dirty look, gets up, and doesn't say anything. could you be more of an asshole?
has this ever happened to anyone else ?5 -

There is so much noise in today's world. Send help.1

Today I discovered that Haskell can be compiled to js. This is both wonderful and disturbing: having the strengths of Haskell feels right and encouraging, but having to transpile it to js feels unnaturally dirty.
Still, I'm not sure I can apply this at my job in any future, but I might have just the case in the brewing.7 -
I want to quit. I don’t feel like writing code anymore. I feel burnt out. As fuck. People keep changing requirements leaving me to do the impossible. And honestly do their dirty work.2
-
Worst practice -- our application isn't built to properly handle threads and I just added a Sleep statement to wait for the backend process to replicate its data. I feel so guilty and dirty.

Me: Ok it looks like Gamemaker will never come to linux and I can't get it running under wine... Suppose it wont hurt to learn monogame while I have Linux, Mac and windows to hand...
*Googles tutorials*
Me: Oh god there is fuck all, it just points to XNA stuff... Oh look a tutorial for monogame itself!
*Notices its an official Microsoft tutorial*
Me: Swallow your pride Alex... Go to the dark side and use a Microsoft product willingly...

Wife asks me to peel potatoes. I know I am expected to peel potatoes AND carrots but I don't operate by that logic and if I did I would feel dirty inside

Official documentation > StackOverflow.
StackOverflow sometimes has well-grounded and elaborate explanations on a question by well-meaning and knowledgeable developers, but oftentimes the answers also contain outdated or 'dirty' solutions and so it's always to be taken with a grain of salt.
However, in cases like the official Spring documentation, the IETF RFC's and the MDN, those provide a correct explanation to the problem, even if it requires some reading around. When it comes to serious and correct work, I favor these over the bro-zone that is StackOverflow.6 -
In my previous rant:
Last week I resigned, in the meantime they've completely reworked the git flow process and made PR's optional, among other stuff.
Today: "Architects" ask that we stop creating tags. We're replacing release tags with release branches.
I feel dirty only for imagining having to do a "git checkout -b "v1.2.3".
Good times :)4 -
when you are at someone else's desktop/laptop and the screen is so dirty you can almost see what that person likes to eat.
yuck!
And if that's a touch-screen, you are literally touching what that person ate weeks, months ago.6 -
Wtf is happening to tech security... Last 4 months
All WiFi is now crackable. .. in short amount of time
Windows . . Annihilated with this new bug might not be fixable... and work back on all of them
iPhones cracked ...
Linux dirty cow ...
Android been suffering.
And everyone knows Mac's security is joke ...
Finger prints ... Made pointless on everything.
Literally all going to shit .. 😐
And I know how to do all this... It's all out in the open not even hard to find8 -
I just started using a new React component library
https://ant.design
apparently they decided that rather than include all the icons as a separate font file, or dynamically loaded SVG, they would encode every single icon as a SVG in a JS string, and concatenate them all together into a single file.
I feel dirty but I just committed a 2MB javascript payload to the staging server.
Suggestions for a LIGHTWEIGHT React/Typescript component library?1 -
Heres a rant you dont see everyday, the lazy gits in my office who dont clean up after themselves. Go to the kitchen to make coffee only to be confronted by a mountain of dishes, the peak of which may have been level with High Hrothgar. Had to dry them and put them away before I could really even move. Like just wash something after you use it, then take the extra 20 seconds to dry it and put it away, dont just rinse it and then leave it sitting there. AAARRRGGGHHHH1

I am so bored with my job in Devops, I only need a few dirty scripts to run everything...
So much so that I started to search for C++ jobs (going back to my previous background), even though I hate C++.
At least it's going to be more mentally stimulating, they also tend to be paid higher than Devops.5 -
Sometimes when I piss it goes on and off again, like 1s and 0s. If I put that in code it has less bugs then the shit you just committed.2

Has anyone here used MongoDB for relational databases? I am trying to use MySQL with Node but I feel like the whole thing is a mess. There are some ORMs like Knex or Sequelize for MySQL but they are pretty crap. I am thinking if I should just move onto MongoDB instead of MySQL, at the same time I feel a little dirty to store relational data in a document store :(18

So another rant inspired me.
Tell me one fact or detail about your favorite programming language, other devs not using it, might not know about.
I go with: In Delphi you don't have garbage collection, unless you use interfaces the right way.7 -

Heck yeah,
So an old Ionic 3 project wont work on the newest CLI.
I check around for the error, update some dependencies, sure enough it starts working again, all is great or so I thought.
Later something weird starts happening, upon pushing a new view on the navCtrl, the navParams are null on the next view.
I later find out that navCtrl is becoming navParams just on the first bit of the view loading, so I do a dirty fix just to keep working on the functionality from my browser, I know very well this will cause problems later on, this is just so I can keep working on functionality.
I finish all of the functionality and I'm ready to compile for android, I run my script, the dirty fix comes to bite my butt now.
I remove the dirty fix hoping for it to work just well on the apk.
Now gradle doesn't find ddmlib.jar, some 15 minutes of troubleshooting do nothing.
Fuck it, I'll just create a new project from the CLI and drag all the code there so that navParams work as expected.
Sorry Ionic, but the world is not our oyster when subtle changes in dependencies produce such unexpected behaviour, with some fucking view parameters!.
I'm looking forward to get done with all the current projects to jump back to native.1 -
You can really tell a lot about a coder from their build log. Especially the actual compile error reasons.
Yes, I'm talking about you who duct-tapes solutions for others to clean your mess up later when your hack falls apart , you dirty ba****d! -
I need to create a couple of websites real quick, mostly brochure style...
I don't normally do this, but, in this case, I have to.
I'm a programmer though, not a designer
What would you recommend for someone like me, that's fast, but reilable
All I can think of, is wordpress but that's a dirty word around here (for seeminglyg ood reason)
anything else?10 -
Not really Lol. WTF? Did you just tell me that VPN for IoT is a bunch of crap just to leave the room without arguing about the alternatives?! What is you fucking point you dirty piece o' motherfuckin shit! Please do me a favor and go fuck yourself!

Anyone else noticed this on Chrome mobile? If you stay still long enough on a website and try to scroll up, you will refresh instead.

I should do this more often
And I should now pull in all new versions and other things...3 -
So SQL Cursors definitely suck. Got a one time data migration script that needs to migrate 3 million rows of data (which I misread as 300k)
Using cursors it would take 15 hours to complete. Ive just had to make the most disgusting script using recursion and a whole lot of CTE's but it now takes about 15 mins to do the same faff
I feel dirty just reading the script, but atleast it'll be dead and buried once it's been ran
TLDR Cursors bad, m'kay2 -
Many months into the project, we discovered that the client doesn't have a REST API for the data we needed from their side available at all - it's a legacy SOAP service.
I somehow got our Node.JS backend to do SOAP calls and use the XML results.
I'm not sure if I should feel proud or dirty at this point.3 -

So I am a Ruby guy since I don't now when. Probably forever. Lately I have to code Groovy. People are telling me all the time that Groovy is like Ruby. Let me tell you: No! Groovy is not like Ruby. Groovy is shitty Java with a slightly more usable syntax. Nothing more. It is so so tedious to code and reminds me why I stopped coding Java like 8 years ago. The fact that some features resemble Ruby syntax makes it even harder for me because I cannot code and facepalm at the same time. And I automatically type Ruby code all the time because it looks so similar in some places. I don't have that problem with other languages. Just Groovy. And the fact that Java people like it tells me how bad Java really is. It's just dirty. Guys, I feel so dirty now. And showering this morning didn't help. Had to get that off my chest. Thanks for "listening"9

no don't leave hold on
my teacher called me an advanced student for knowing that the different homework assignments we had all shared the same file structure, and that you could easily copy/paste html from last week's assignment into thos week's because the referenced stylesheets and content were all in the same place
i feel good but dirty
html is litterally where i started learning -
To be honest with you, I’ve never had a bad experience with PHP.
Yes, it’s “dirty” compared to something like Haskell, but it’s not a bad thing. Dirty things usually bring simplicity and allow implementing the intended case super quickly, at the cost of breaking apart at scale. There are no bad tools, there are wrong tools for the job.
Premature optimization is the root of all evil. The more I launch new projects for me/other companies, the more I come to the realization that the vast majority of the projects out there will never see scale. They will be proven non-viable/impractical and deemed obsolete way before they outgrow the $20 VPS they were hosted on.
Sometimes (all the time, really) launching quickly like there is no tomorrow is the most viable business strategy. If (yes, “if”, not “when”) your project outgrows PHP and gets to the point when PHPs abstraction model is the bottleneck, you’ll have the money to rewrite the project in any language out there, trust me.
As someone said on biking subreddit to a person that asked how to buy the newest super-aero helmet, “if the aerodynamics of the old helmet is what holds you back, someone will be sending you the new one for free”.6 -
Dirty data? More like dirty laundry! And don't even get me started on explaining complex models to non-techies. It's like trying to teach a cat to do calculus. Furr-get about it!6

Im tasked to investigate a stored proc that is slow at certain times ( 20-30mins ) and fast at other times ( 10-15 secs ).
After following suggestions i found out that adding NOLOCK hint on all the select queries makes the execution time fast ( 10-20 secs) .
Although i know that adding NOLOCK means a dirty read of possible incorrect data, does it justify the performance boost?
Speed or data correctness?4 -

The beginning of my next blog post... at 6am.... Guess who hates his job and why?
<h1>Thinking Before You Code<h1>
The choices you make when you code a part of a program, or even the program itself, impacts everything around it. The importance increases as the size and the scope does.
Quick and dirty simple scripts that get a simple job done and rarely needs changing… fine.
A bunch of quick and dirty hacks all pieced together as part of a giant application... that constantly changes? That's duct tape code that will bite you in the ass later or will give birth to a maniacal raging psychopath that wants to kill you.
<b>SOLID, design patterns: saving yourself and others from you</b>
TBC...3 -
I've reached a point where instead of adding one new hotfix to the site again, I rather rewrite it from scratch so I won't feel so dirty hacking in all the new features that come up.
This way I can also bury my previous bad decisions.2 -
FUCK i just lost 20€
I fucking hate "real" cash. It is dirty unhygienic and you can so fucking easily loose it. I swear losing a Note is a worse pain than cutting yourself or burning your hand. It's just as bad as stomping your head really hard. I HATE THIS FEELING22 -
My team is in charge of an old and huge monolith. Many times we have to write dirty hacks because otherwise we would need to rewrite lots of things just to make even 1 tiny addition.
- When my supervisor makes a hack: "yeah I know it's bad, but it's a shortcut that should temporarily satisfy the business now, we'll fix it later hahaha"
- When I make a hack: "it's a hack, can you not do that?"1 -

TLDR: Why the fuck is a senior developer creating multiple instances of a core piece of logic all over the fucking application?!?!?!?
Context: I am also a senior dev, and have worked with this guy for years. He has even completed me on my clean code practices and architecture, so I really cant understand why he would copy and paste a public class into 3 other models on the project instead of just referencing the original. I’m just posting this hear as my version of screaming into a pillow in frustration, and to avoid badmouthing him to co-workers.6 -
The customer was really persistant that we should not use ANY locks when reading from SQL server, not even Sch-S locks, because "noone else is using locks".
After two days of trying to explain to them the concept of "Dirty Reads" and the practical imposibility to avoid Sch-S locks, they finally gave up.
The best part was when they asked in a quite condescending way "this is funny, why do you think that nolocks causes dirty reads?" and I sent them a link to the MSDN page about nolock that cleary states "Specifies that dirty reads are allowed.". -
I changed my shirt and now it looks like we're evil rivals.
I remember him telling me he has the dilemma of "clean css solution" and "quick and dirty js solution" and he always takes the second one.
My dilemma is the other way around: "Clean js solution" or "hacky, dirty css solution". I always take the second one if possible..6 -
Hi fellow devranters,
Just started working for a small engineering company ~10 employees. They have a single guy that have done most og the development work and version control management. Turns out everything was stored om his personal harddrive with a backup on an USB drive. I'm doing the "dirty work" on porting the version control to a network drive. Not ideal, but the boss was insisting on doing it this way. Have anybody encountered anything like this?2 -
Any recommendations for moving a blog?
My wife and I just cancelled our account with siteground hosting a WordPress blog. Looking for a cheaper alternative. Willing to get my hands dirty as a web dev, but would like a nice CMS experience for my wife. Also want to keep our existing content. If we can keep our custom domain somehow that would be a win.
Thanks!7 -
Needed to help a friend with her Bachelor Thesis. She writes in Javascript and needs to synchronously use the result of a postgresql query. The query call is asynchronous.
We did what any person that searches for a dirty solution would do.
We saved the result of a query in a file and load the file when we need it.
Why is Javascript a thing?6 -
So what if my screen is dirty? I'm not asking you a question, not to look at it, mind your own business!

I have a bad feeling about calling IOT here in my country. It sounds like EUT ("fck" in english) when i speak native accent5
-
So, the main system we develop and "maintain" is a horrible monolithic huge project that has the majority of the code in one and only one god class.
On top of that, all the main logic is implemented directly in the "main" method (yes, the "public static void main"). Now every time you have to create a method to use it in the main logic, it has to be static!
God, I hate to even look at this class, let alone touch it, I feel dirty, like I'm touching a pile of shit. -
I feel dirty for putting an empty .ts file just so VSCode would stop complaining about my tsconfig file that I created so Vetur would stop complaining about not having one. I didn't need any of that.6

When you’re laughing/cringing at some of these rants and you hear that little voice in the back of your head say:
“I shouldn’t be laughing.. Screenshots of my code will probably be posted here when the next guy takes over my project..”
I’ve written fast and dirty code back in the days that still makes me nervous, but we don’t have the time and resources for a rewrite and besides.. My code works, so.. 🤷🏻♂️💅🏻 -
trying to refactor some code to implement a issue/feature on a ticket:
try option A. .... 2 hours later hit a Dead end.
try option B .... 1 day later.. another dead end.
try option B.2f ... I want to give up... wasting all my time...
Not sure what I'm suppose to do anymore..
It feels chaotic and dirty hacking to make it work.. and even now. I cannot get it to compile...
Only solution looks like Copy and paste a couple of classes and change one single variable. with huge preprocessor #if around them.
I need to take a shower I feel dirty now...1 -

Part of one of the workarounds for Dirty COW is to disable ptrace.

Linux Mint on an iMac.
I attempted to install Linux Mint on an iMac, unfortunately I did not realize how difficult that would be. And the current keyboard I was using didn't let me access the boot menu. when I finally found a keyboard that worked, I installed LM and found that some drivers just refused to work with LM. I then got my hands dirty and somehow managed to fix everything. This took me around five days to figure out.1 -

- Finish "Introduction to algorithms"
- Learn some genetic algorithms
- Get my hands dirty on reinforcement learning
- Learn more about data streaming application (My currently app is still using plain stupid REST to transport image). I don't know, maybe Kafka and RabbitMQ.
- Learn to implement some distributed system prototypes to get fitter at this topic. There must be more than REST for communicating between components.
- Implementing a searching module for my app with elastic search.
- Employ redis at sometime for background tasks.
- Get my handy dirty on some operating system concepts (Interprocess Communication, I am looking at you)
- Take a look at Assembly (I dont want to do much with Assembly, maybe just want to implement one or two programs to know how things work)
- Learn a bit of parallel computing with CUDA to know what the hell Tensorflow is doing with my graphic card.
- Maybe finishing my first research paper
- Pass my electrical engineering exam (I suck at EE)1 -
Do you want to know why all the popular open source projects have less-than-optimal, sometimes really dirty code?
It's because their developers ditched all the unnecessary stuff to just get the damn thing done. When I choose an open source dependency, I don't need unfinished stuff. I need a stuff that works and has all the features I need from the very start. If it works, I don't care about code quality in my deps.
This is the reason why dirty, rushed stuff with a great idea behind it gains popularity. PHP, Git, jQuery, the list is quite large.
While you've been busy polishing your files hierarchy, these guys already shipped their product, gained adoption, and their userbase doesn't need your product anymore.
This is applicable only for true open source, not "it's developed by a full-time team of principal developers and the CTO is fucking Kent Beck, it costs $1m per month but yea we have it on github".3 -
Question for the Android users!

Not fair! How come Apache gets its modsecurity module pre-compiled and available in public repositories, but Nginx hides it behind a paywall of their "Plus" package/version?
Ugh... At least they provide the module's source, so one can compile and deploy it by himself...6 -
So... Three of us have the task to do security reviews for one team... As to who reviews what, we decided on the basic algo of assigning an index to our names and then doing (ticket number) % 3 to get the index and therefore the reviewer for that task... Simple enough, but still you need to modulo the number and remember your index so I created a simple .html file so we can easily see who reviews which ticket by inputting the ticket number... In a hurry I named it whoreview.html
Today, the manager saw it and said to rename it before HR gets involved :D -
Ugh, no.. You got yourself from dirty dental-dams of “Jif” believers, all the way to passed bass-ackwards. That PR is raw sewage and your demoted back to entry-level if not intern. That feeling when you inherit a script to automate something that takes 10 seconds. Why would they even write this? It's not like the task is hard....
...
And why would they write it this way? I'm sure if I just move this part and ....
That feeling when you spend several hours improving and redesigning a perfectly functional script to automate a 10 second task for zero gain aside from cleaner code. "But the code for this quick-and-dirty script I'm never going to look at again looks so much better now!"
... If only it did a bunch of complicated parsing, regex matching, and error checking just so I can answer one less prompt.... Unless that parsing fails. Then it should still ask me for that prompt... And also validate that the answers I give are valid and correct....
That feeling when you spend a whole nother day starting from scratch to implement error checking and complex parsing logic knowing full well the original task takes 10 seconds to do manually and is needed at most twice a day (for a grand total of 20s a day)
WHY AM I LIKE THIS?!?!?!4 -

How to get instant motivation and lazer focus on my coding? Do you know any trick? I know that brain fog requires a healthier lifestyle, but believe me i do a lot of that ( yoga, hikings, arts). How to deal with task that have no clean solution?1 -
Got really damn tired of all the "dirt" in WordPress, so I decided to build my own CMS (just for my website).
Wordpress is nice for just blogs, but going anywhere beyond that becomes dirty really quickly...

I thought I might give bootstrap a chance by recreating an existing website. Problem is that this website is "simpler" with a carousel and a dark mode toggle being the few more complicated features, so it might be even faster to simply write the CSS myself and get my hands dirty. Using bootstrap for this seems more and more overkill, the more I look at it. On the other hand I know bootstrap already takes much care of responsiveness and vendor-prefixes and so on. What have I gotten myself into with bootstrap...21

Not super ranty but what I’m interested in how passwords are managed in your organisation?
I feel dirty receiving passwords through slack and having a spreadsheet on a shared drive seems like madness.
I’ve worked at organisations before that have a single login to a password manager. However theoretically I still have access to that as no one would have changed the password.
Organisational password manager softwares are really expensive!14 -
sigh, I guess I have to learn javascript.
u know, as a devop/prod/backend engineer, i thought i would be exempt, but world wide web of "one more thing a dev should do" won't let me have it :(
so, any of you have a quick and dirty guide to catch up with the latest essential components of javascript as an experienced dev who absolutely knows nothing about js?13 -
For those of us OCD Sheldon Cooper types out there, programming can get very annoying.
For example, I want to do everything as efficient as possible but sometimes situations require "live with it" or "quick and dirty" solutions, which grinds my teeth because I'm not applying perfection in everything and a laid back attitude is against my personality, much like Sheldon. It's the same annoyance as when Penny knocks twice but not thrice at the door.
This sure is easier for brogrammers.4 -

Haskell's foldl1 is do satisfying: "Folding" multidimensional arrays using a predicate feels like cheating. I feel dirty and clean everytime I use it...

Hi guys. I could use a bit of help. I am receiving the lastLogout data from the DB, and if it's NULL, it means that I will start the tutorial because it's the first login. I am rendering with serverside, and I'm using handlebars. So the data is rendered nicely with

If you know, a specific string is always going to be the same, and theres no way any other value could be passed to this statement. Is it still ok to use string.substring(0, string.IndexOf(&$&$))?

On arriving in the corpse of a once proud city I was less than astounded as I walked out the station to see everyone I’d seen before
Literally everyone
There they were in walking denial of almost a decade or more in some cases
Sitting having the same prepared conversations
Driving by blasting music
Walking their I dog
Shoplifting the same goods
And their repetition as usual causes wildlife to become confused and perform the same activities
The rats ran about
At least five of them in familiar scurrying movement
Over bold from being ignored and well fed
Filthy dirty rats
Just like the people
Filthy dirty monsters
Living like the needle in the groove
Eating away at my brain
With such violence I want to leap into an unsurvivable scenario and return back to where I just came from just to see a different brand of freak do nothing in a different fashion and throw off the routine3 -

Missed the fucking bus to work because they changed up the times here without prior notice...
So no more having the "nice" train (with comfy clean seats, wifi and airco) but the "crap" train (old dirty seats, no wifi and no airco) AND a quarter of an hour wait...
I rly need a drivers license... -
I can make a prediction the same dirty ass bastards that screwed me over the last time this happened will do so again because god forbid I live on like I have so many times before like an ordinary man with some moral improvement no no
That messes with their circular walk into oblivion without life2 -
I have been using the same silver spoon for 6 years. It sits in my drawer used and waiting for it's next mission. Have often thought of washing it in the lounge, but then I'd bump into people who excitedly introduce themselves and ask if I'm a new employee...I've been here 9 years.
Have never washed it, perhaps I'll get a big spoon to accompany my dirty spoon...2 -
So...
Today I saw some smelly dirty guy with a terrible hairdo
He showed up after I was at some festival and bought this funny Rick and Morty shall which showed Rick and Morty smoking pot
These idiots are incredibly specific about annoying stupid things

Watched the same dirty cops milling around
And listened to some kid mimic something I said as a kid in what was just a completely novel situation with no prompting 40+ years later

I think you people would get hurt many times more by vigilantes if there was more certainty of violence succeeding without capture.
In my experience dirty cops aren't a protective Barrier neither are people like you. Once a Person gets pushed enough they act
Just would be nice if it was more frequent2 -
Client just requested a number of columns be added to the database called Misc (Misc1, Misc2, etc.).
Something about doing that feels so wrong, but they insist.1 -

ah yes this life.
the life of a persons stuck temporarily in a dirty town with only yawning oblivion before and behind even if he does what he should and significantly reduces his income in the process and therefore the wine and steaks stop. sigh.

So I remade a video today and the precision to which peoples nervous systems behave is ridiculous when it comes to reproducing willful actions when surrounded by other people recreating willful actions sigh
And here in thought I’d had a new idea
Oh well not this time
However does remind me the dirty slut bags fucked men over for no reason at all again
