"editable dropdown list" is called a ComboBox. and is one of standard ui elements in windows, at least.
useful for fields which need to be a free text input, but still have a set of very often used values.
it's basically a textfield with autocomplete of the most used entries.
So, yeah it's been a month in the industry for me now. Rant time - I got mind fucked when I saw my teammate making a drop-down list which was editable, when I confronted him and explained him the disadvantages of that. His explanation is that user will not take advantage of that as the feature is for our internal use. But on a positive note he fixed it.
