After being on devrant for a while, I've been inspired to move to Linux, and my desire to learn is making me consider Arch. My only issue is that I don't have a computer to swap OS', because there are some people who depend on my laptop when I'm not home (more on that another time, maybe), and they will have a fit if I switch. 😥

Anyone have any experience on booting from a external HDD (and not a stick)?

    @chabad360 in general it was no problem for me to boot from an external HDD or even from a SD Card. You only need to be careful with the different names of your drives to prevent an accidental loss of your data. The official Arch Wiki is really great and pretty much contains everything you need to know.

    @2lazy2debug to say the least, it's the only situation where I follow "please close all your applications". I honestly can't do anything else while it's running.

    It's a nightmare.

    @tomtom2770 I will definitely look into it (I practically have to).

    Also, the main issue with external HDDs: I find d that some OS' may throw a fit when booting from one. So I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't getting into any problems.

    Run it as a VM, then when you're comfortable with it, run Windows as a VM.

    @theKarlisK Oh, my CPU can run a VM, just my system is too weak to really make a VM useful. But I will definitely try. Any idea how well Arch runs in Hyper-V?

    @chabad360 you may have better luck using Windows Subsystem for Linux if you're on Windows 10, instead of a VM?

    Btw, had a Core i3 4GB RAM laptop for a while, Arch in a VM worked just fine if you used a (very) lightweight UI.

    @theKarlisK I'll give it a shot, but my system is running slow, as it is so I'll have to see.
