Reinstalled my dedicated server and realized (afterwards) that I just erased my entire openvpn/mysql auth setup and I don't have an entirely working copy.

FUCK.

Okay, nothing I can do about that afterwards, setup csf right away, monitored the auth log for a minute and noticed one ip which had just connected and found it weird somehow. Blocked the ip.

Then, one second later, as my console stopped responding and that ip address suddenly looked veeeery familiar, I realized I just blocked myself. (the blocks persist across reboots)

😐

Went to the control panel and hit the reinstall button. Confirmed, and two seconds later I realized I could just have connected to any of my own fucking vpn services to unblock myself.

What in the living fuck is wrong with me @_@

    @AlexDeLarge Computer glasses for half a year now, I wear them as usual glasses.

    Started to get huge ass headaches and this works like a charm!
  • 6
    @AlexDeLarge Computer glasses filter out blue light and blue light, which mostly comes from screens, is the biggest cause of tired eyes.
  • 4
    @AlexDeLarge And I don't need ones with any strength as my eyes are still good.
  • 4
    @AlexDeLarge It started with strained eyes and after a month it was pounding headaches every day after work.

    I got mine from aliexpress haha, 5 euro for 4 pair! And they work just great. You can also search around for more premium ones, got one pair from bol.com (huge Dutch webshop)

    Is it me or do you have an unusual story to tell almost everyday? How tiring must your life be ^^
  • 4
    @TheOct0 I do shitloads of things every day and thus I get unusual shit every day, yes!

    Although my sleep does suffer from it :/

    @linuxxx May I ask you how old you are?
  • 3
    @TheOct0 It's public knowledge here so definitely! I'm 23 years old/young.
  • 2
    @linuxxx It would seem I'm too new here to know the common knowledge :)

    I guess the fact that you're so busy comes from your privacy addiction? Or is it just your lifestyle / occupation?
  • 4
    @TheOct0 A combination of privacy/security/servers/programming interests.

    Those can take up loads of time. Next to that, devRant has a quite big role in my life and I also have a very busy social (friends/family) life so yeah add everything together and voila. Still single though :/ but that's also because I don't do social media (including WhatsApp) and that's very weird over here.

    @linuxxx I'm hugely into privacy and programming myself, but I don't have any social life to take space alongside this :)

    If I had to sum my life up, it would be development and computer stuff, privacy, gaming, music, and my girlfriend. Family is present too but a lot less, my family life is almost a background process in all of this.

    By the way, I had a plan to start a website (or web service) called Quest For Privacy (or any name related to Privacy) that would be aiming at helping people with this stuff. The thing is, although I am a privacy fan, I am also almost still a rookie, so I'd need this to be a collab. Would you be interested in such a thing?
    I know that websites such as privacytools.io already do some of the job, but I'd like to go further.

    @TheOct0 I'm working on a prism-break.org alternative myself. I've got quite some server power so if interested.... ;)
  • 2
    @linuxxx Could you elaborate? Fusing my project and yours could be beneficial for the both of them (although you probably don't want tampering with yours), and I am interested in the server power anyways ^^
  • 1
    @TheOct0 Working on a privacy based service-comparison site :)

    Visit the mentioned site and you'll get the general idea!
  • 2
    @linuxxx That sounds awesome, are you planning on adding communications or articles on your website? That would integrate my idea of helping people, describing the processes, and adding interactivity to the service.

    Or, if you just want to keep things the way they are, are you in any need of a developer? I'm not as talented as most people here (or anywhere else for that matter) but I'm willing to help PHP, js, mySQL, HTML and CSS-wise :)
  • 1
    @TheOct0 Yes!

    And I'd like to continue with my project as it's going right now but am open to feature suggestions :)

    I desperately need a front end person 😅

    And just for clarification, I don't make that much so won't be able to pay for anything except the servers I rent :/
  • 2
    @linuxxx Wonderful!

    I don't need any kind of payment since I don't have any expenses (student with loving parents), but neither am I a "good" front-end dev. I can develop stuff and I am proficient in the languages I mentioned, but don't expect any creative design from me... ^^'

    That being said, everyone starts somewhere, so since I seem to be an unexpected dev entering battle, maybe I could get less work done and try to actually create something. That will depend on your expectations :)

    If you want to contact me please do so via GitHub, I'll give you my details there, I'm not that willing to publish them publicly :)
  • 2
    @TheOct0 Awesome! One problem; I don't have github for privacy reasons 😅
  • 2
    @linuxxx No problem then, where do you want to contact me?

    Also, I only use GitHub to contribute to things sometimes, none of my info is on there... But since all the Microsoft stuff, I'm considering permanently removal of my account :/
  • 1
    @TheOct0 You could email me at linuxxx@tuta.io?
  • 2
    @linuxxx Doing that :)
  • 1
    @linuxxx Did you receive my email?
  • 1
    @TheOct0 Will check later! Trying to get some shit to work right now 😅
  • 2
    @linuxxx No problem :)

    Good luck with this ^^

    Is it still the server from earlier?
  • 1
    @TheOct0 Trying to get an instance of searx.me running on a vm on my dedi :)
  • 1
    @linuxxx How much is your server bill at the end of the month?
  • 1
    @TheOct0 I pay around 70 euro a month for everything.
  • 1
    @linuxxx Oh okay, well that's an interesting fee indeed. I pay around 5€ per month for my server, so I was wondering how much such an intensive use would amount to... And it's as high as I expected it to be ^^'
  • 1
    @linuxxx How did you purchase devRant supporter? I only see the Google Play way to do it, and since you don't use that kind of stuff...
  • 3
    @TheOct0 Have a Google account just for that too badly :/
