    I don’t get this notion of not helping people as a computer programmer. As one you develop an understanding of the thing you make software for, shouldn’t you at least have a look instead of being a dick?

    Think your a bit of a dick to be honest. He obviously appreciated the fact you know more than him. Would it have taken you long to suggest running crystal disk mark ? Or to say have you tried any diagnostics?

    Failing that tell him the truth. You don't know and can't help. No need to be a snotty brat about it. Just because your a programmer doesn't give you instant superiority and a god complex

    Help other people. You never know if it may help you in future.

    First of all I don't think your answer was that witty or humorous , second is that if someone comes and asks you for a favor there is no need to be a dick about it, if you don't have the time tell him so. If you can help but choose not to, thats just selfish and will come later to bite you in the arse in the future. When you yourself is denied of help.

    Being depended on is a very joyful thing - something which I see most people scoffing at - it makes it easier to form connections and relationships if you are someone that positively affect other peoples lives, and those connections can and most likely will help greatly down the road.
    Think twice when you deny someone of a simple favor in the future, especially if you are also trying to destroy their pride with your denial like an absolute douche.

    No need to be a cunt about.

    The teacher would have tried to explain, at least. You just shut him down and he'll most likely end up paying $70 for a repair service when you could have taken 5min to run TeskDisk for him

    @marnsghol @githelp @dufferz @stuxnet I like how, in their previous rant, OP seems to expect everyone to deliver their stuff perfectly. And they also want their teachers to care about the context of the request, the student, to be understanding... "Do what I say, not what I do".

    I would have explained that CS has nothing to do with hardware troubleshooting and repair, but that I would take a look, because as a tech enthusiast I am familiar with PC hardware.

    Creating animosity for its own sake is a guaranteed way to stop people liking you.

    Well if he atleast asked me how am I first, before asking my degree, I would be like 'I feel like fixing printers today!', but ok...

    but if u want to turn up stuff from my rants, If he came to me and asked 'Hey there is some strange sounds in my hdd, what about we open it' I would be more than welcome to help him.

    And at the end, I had that itching to know whats wrong anyway, so I opened his shit up anyway and guess that theres some stuff with the head which reads the data, since the disc spins..

    But at the end I dont fucking get why people thing that u study 7 years to be fixing stuff..

    but ..... but does he has a trebuchet ???
    i mean it'd be awesome.

    “Turn it off and turn it back on again” that’s my go-to...doesn’t matter what it is

    @TheOct0

    I got it, don't worry.

    @zututukulipa just because you had some hardware fixing ptsd syndrom doesnt mean that u should be a dick man

    I wish I could give these kind of of replies

    @TheOct0

    @githelp Never ever for free tho

    @Condor Right but you can tell someone you're not going to help them without being a cunt. This dude's gotta live with this person for the rest of the school year. The last thing you need is a pissed off roommate.
  • 2
    @Stuxnet I'd rather be a dick than be some roommate's personal tech support, but that's just me I guess ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
  • 3
    @Condor You're missing my point lol

    You can tell him you're not doing his shit for him without being a cunt.

    "Hey bro most people don't know this, but computer science doesn't actually deal with the hardware aspect of computers.*

    See? Point made, and you're not a cunt. If they persist, that's another story. But the OP was unnecessarily rude and obnoxious.
  • 1
    @Stuxnet good point. Eh, I'd probably be a bit more blunt but yeah that seems like a good way to put it.
  • 2
    @Condor I've seen the havoc pissed off and psycho college roommates can reek.

    Telling someone to fuck off on the first week or so is a bad idea, especially if you don't know the person.
