How can you not get excited about Machine Learning or Neural nets or anything related to AI? It is has been a dream of engineering since forever to create an intelligent machine and it is finally possible. I dont see it as "just another trend" or as "overhyped", because that idea has probably been around since the beginning of engineering. Like what the hell, how can that be overhyped? You can only think it is overhyped if you are the same kind of person who thinks AI is just a bunch of if statements. You just dont get it then, you dont see the potential of a learning, self improving system, built for a specific task.
