Guys I need your help about iMac vs PC

So I have finally got some cash in my hand to spare. Enough to buy an iMac 27 inch or a high end PC.

I used to game a lot but I've slowed down eventually to be more productive.

I mostly work on node, c++ and Java.

I used to use a Macbook Pro and I felt it was really productive.

Any thoughts?

    @rookiemaverick @edisonn that's 2 more months away :( Why not iMac?

    i agree, if you can get a mbp, get that one. it's great for programming.

    PC over iMac though. It's upgradable.

    Get the best spec PC you can afford (ram, disk, CPU, monitors, decent keyboard etc) and put Linux on it.

    @StefanH I tried hackintosh before. It's not stable at all. If I indeed buy a PC I will use Windows

    @spl0 Buying a expensive linux machine is kind of pointless. Especially now that Windows has bash.

    @tahnik dont count on it unless u spend some time sleeping with it.

    wait until the new macbook come out, and buy it with a usb-c port equiped 4k monitor.

    build it yourself, go for a linux laptop

    Well I love my 27" iMac and the previous incarnations. Of all the gear I have, I'll never be without a desktop Mac. Yes, they have a shelf life, but it's a long and reliable one. When it's too old for the heavier stuff, use it as a dev server or put it out to pasture as the home media server.

    Best things I have ever bought (excluding Atari of course).

    @neumann I have a Linux machine already. That's separate

    @tahnik eh? buying an expensive linux machine is pointless now that windows has bash?

    you'll have to explain that one to me a bit more please.....

    not sure if its a joke or not :-)

    @neumann laptops are awkward to build! Hard to buy the bits for em..

    @pixeltherapy What kind of Atari? :-)

    Just my thoughts as requested.

    Bought a late-2013 model iMac a couple of years ago (it was right after they announced the 5K model so the price dropped a couple hundred bucks).

    Now, I had used a Mac only once before, on the mid-90s back when the difference between Apple and MS was stark.

    But the first thing I noticed was that even though OS X (now MacOS) is still elegant the difference in ease of use is quite small now - at least at first.

    It really took awhile before I began to glom onto the power under the hood. The trick is to hunt up some sites with "tips and tricks" for OS X and learn a bit each time you have a moment to play around with it.

    I think as a development platform it's superb especially with Xcode.

    I discovered that what I thought was "plenty" hardware wasn't. It was only after I upgraded 16GB to 32, and replaced the HDD with an SSD, that I started getting satisfactory performance.

    I don't regret the purchase.

    @spl0 :) dont know what you mean i replaced the screen and keyboard on mine. bought ssd and Ram for it :))

    im not a mac person, but can you do that with a mac? i dont think apple lets you

    @spl0 The 1040 ST :) It did games, pixel art, 3D art, music production and coding. All of these things I still do and I have Atari to thank for being awesome just when I needed it!

    @neumann I think you are correct!

    @pixeltherapy Brilliant machines! 68K CPU... and DEGAS! :)

    @spl0 Not a joke sorry. Windows has better driver support for pretty much everything. The reason I never used Windows before was because it didn't have bash which I use all the time.

    Once the bash is in Windows and Ms has done quite a good job with Windows 10, I'll prefer it over Linux distros now.

    Also if I really want a expensive Unix machine why wouldn't I just buy a mac instead :)

    MacBook Pro in a few months. Yeah I like my iMac but upgrading one is a pain (where adding ram and a SSD to my MBP was like counting to three) - and you're not as mobile.

    However if you plan to play games too, get the iMac. My low-end 2012 iMac still runs new games on low-medium settings with 40-75 FPS - which is fine for my amount of gaming (2-3 hours a week)

    Eww.. drivers

    @SithLord haha, I guess you never had to worry about it

    @tahnik nooooo :))

    stay with linux, windows 10 is an improvement but it still hogs a lot of resources
  • 1
    @neumann haha, if I buy a high end Pc I don't think resources will be a problem. Although it's gonna be hard to be productive in Windows tho :)

    I will try for a while, if I don't like it I will dual boot and use Windows for gaming and editing only

    @tahnik Linux isnt just a shell...
  • 2
    @spl0 The main reason I use Linux is the shell and the unix ecosystem. Which is pretty much available in both Windows (now) and Mac. You might have a different use for. :)
  • 1
    @tahnik Cool that you have found something that works well for you! I'm not really a big windows or mac user!
  • 2
    @spl0 Yeah Linux is amazing. I've been using fedora for almost 2.5 years now. In my work I used Mac. Both of them are great productivity tools. Mac is just nicer and has better software support.

    And writing codes on Mac feels like you're watching code porn because of their really high display resolution.

    @spl0 ah! degas! Cheers for the nostalgia :)

    I also used NeoPaint a lot, and PoV ray tracer, when I wasn't reading the Jolly Roger :/ 😮
