i have mental health/depreasion problems for 8 years, soon 9, do you think you can help me out/give some advice what i should do about it? im being serious..
-
sjlbruce226y@SukMikeHok you spoke to anyone mate? If you have and they aren’t listening then you need to find someone else. If you need anyone to chat to I’m always happy to chat. I’ve had issues since I was 14 and I’m 26 now so I know it’s not easy.

C0D4681456yNothing wrong with getting into development at a later stage, and being self taught in this field is a great advantage to being able to pick things up quickly as time goes by, this is a field of never ending learning after all so getting that right from the start will only be beneficial.
Any reason for going with JS?
Do you have a project in mind that would use it?
Not criticising, i use JS myself as a web dev, but generally you would pick a project and learn / use the language best suited.
The best way to get started is always to build something and continue building it into a useful product, at least for yourself but maybe even for others.
Sitepoint has quite a lot on JS and if you’re into learning from books.
MSDN for JavaScript is always up to date and if memory serves me right it has some tutorials to get going.
Pluralsight I think had JS courses back when I was learning C#, and you use to be able to get a free membership from the Microsoft Developer site.
Good luck on your ventures 👍 -
sjlbruce226y@C0D4 thank you mate. In terms of JavaScript it’s just because what I picked up with free code camp. But no particular loyalties to it. I’ve dabbled with a few - php, ruby, python and JavaScript. I did C and Java at uni too. Just figured I need to try and get proficient at one.

@sjlbruce no i never talked about it with anyone. i got depression since i was 13, im 21 now. i don't know what to do
-
sjlbruce226y@SukMikeHok is there anyone you trust that you can talk to? Maybe family or friends? If not your doctor? Treatment can be hit and miss but if it works it can really help. I’ve worked with loads of people who struggle with depression and taking that initial step is almost always the start of them starting to feel better. Talk to someone seriously.

@sjlbruce is there any alcohol drink that can temporarily make me forget depression for a while? i dont drink alcohol and i dont want to use any drugs or pills or cigarettes to fight depression, i can tolerate alcohol if it is the only option left. i dont want to talk to my parents or doctor about it because id make me even more depressed and it would just bring up negativity. im trying hard to stay positive with everyone, pretty much like robin williams before he ended up killing himself

cursee171596y@rsync , wanna share some tips?
I'm am kinda a self made web dev but I attended few programming classes at diploma in computing and info sys mgt. None of them taught me php nor js. It was all C# and Java back in those days.
Then I dropped out of my uni. I learned PHP while I was at uni, so I was like a beginner php dev at the time I dropped out. I keep pursued that route and keep doing PHP and web dev taking few freelance and part-time projects. Then I started a small company with my friends and providing digital marketing services till now. Web dev is a part of our services. After 6 years, I can say that even if I'm not at advanced level, I'm probably an intermediate PHP dev.
So my tips are keep pushing and do your best. Don't change your goals too much. Don't try to do lots of things. Be persistent and have a good faith.
Hope you have a better days soon. -
Nhil1656y@SukMikeHok just want to jump in on this, alcohol is a depressant, it would not mix well with depression. I feel better doing things with other people, that makes me forget about life for a while (if you can), discovering good music as well, I can get lost in music.
-
sjlbruce226y@rsync thank you I will definitely check those out and start trying to get those done once I am out of hospital. Thanks for all your advice.
-
sjlbruce226y@cursee thank you. Am trying to stay focused on just one thing. I tend to go from one idea to the next, so I need to stay focused on one thing definitely.
-
sjlbruce226y@SukMikeHok alcohol just numbs the pain temporarily but makes you feel much worse in the long term. I used to have an alcohol problem and I was just miserable. My suggestion is get a good therapist. Ask yourself, if you woke up tomorrow and everything was perfect, what would be different? What do you need to do to get there? What can you do now to help you feel better? Don’t let it get to the point where you actively consider suicide, it’s a dark lonely path from there my friend. Reach out to someone.
-
@sjlbruce i consider suicide every day so it is nothing new to me. its just a matter of time when something breaks me and i cant take it anymore. if alcohol can temporarily heal depression so be it. its getting worse each day
-
@Mba3gar i know what depression feels like, im not a fucking retard to joke about it
-
@Mba3gar well he mentioned it so i asked along. and devrant kind of is a cure because u express ur rage and depression as a rant
-
sjlbruce226y@SukMikeHok it may be temporary but it also makes you feel worse. I’ve never met a happy alcoholic. I’m not sure if devRant does pm, but feel free to reach out to me if you need to chat. Seriously though, reach out and accept some help. I’m in hospital because I was close to death. But it doesn’t have to get that bad to get help to get better. Seriously bro, get some help and look after yourself.

Hi guys some advice would be appreciated.
I’m new here but have followed for a long time. I enjoy coding in my spare time, particularly web development but I am looking to make it my career.
Currently I work in mental health as a social worker, but ultimately the stress of the job and life in general has led to me being detained in a psychiatric hospital. So I’ve decided I need change.
I want to start a career I want to be in and that is as a developer. In terms of education, I started a degree in maths/cs a long time ago but stopped due to life events at the time. All the rest of my qualifications are around social work.
I’ve been doing my best to learn with Udemy and free code camp. Mainly looking at JavaScript. I also used to work in a charity where I did some (bad) php development and front end work.
Are there any self made developers out there who have any advice for me? I’m looking at doing a bootcamp but dunno if that will help at all.
Any help or advice would be really welcome. Cheers guys :)
