Well it depends on what you want to do. I think Unity is fine for 3D games but it's typically a bit obtuse. I'm personally a fan of gamemaker studio as it's easy to work with and is built for a 2d Sprite based game.

henlo32976yGame engines are good and all. But have you tried taking a step back and use something like processing? I feel it was more satisfying for me and i got to learn a whole lot by working on a lower level

Unity of-course. Much easier to learn as a beginner (scripting is in c#), you can use the free version to develop, publish and even earn from your game.
