Apple rejected my app, because they throught there was a frickin Windows phone on my loading screen.
How insecure can you be?29 -
Once upon a time I was teaching high schoolers Unity/C#. Noisy boy asked me if it was possible to create a robot in C#.
I told him to take printer, take it apart and turn it upside down in the way that printing drum would touch the ground, and then to put a laptop with his C# program on top of it.
When the program will launch, printer will try to print and the whole thing will roll slowly. Isn’t that a robot? You just need to think wider and define what robot is at first.
He was lost in thoughts and completely silent to the end of the lecture.6 -
After one year of procrastination I finally made the game with unity
Ladies and gentleman, spherical voronoi minesweeper
Yes, I made the game before with in c++ which looks quite shitty, but finally, unity30 -
GOD DAMNIT UNITY

A guy wanted me to convert his Unity project from Android to ios.
He was offering less than 50$....
It dosent end here....
He sent me the files in a zip on Google Drive.....
Also the project size was around 3 gb......
😢😢2 -
-Let's start making the game!
-Yaay
-We should focus on performance optimization!
-But we don't have anything to optimize yet..
-Performance optimization!!!
1 month later
-OK you were right, we can't focus on performance now. We need to start making this game!
-Finally!
-So we're in pre-production now, let's do some R&D!
-Awesome, I wanted to start designing our workflow for adding new content, and maybe also loca..
-NO! That's unimportant! We must do R&D!
-OK what should we Arr-and-Dee?
-Performance optimization!!!5 -
So, I've been following a tutorial and explanatory series on YouTube about procedural terrain generation.
I dare saying it's going quite well!23 -
Loneliness is when you implement a compute shader in Unity to render real, user-defined fisheye in RT, and you have no one to share your excitement with.14
-
Ubuntu's default desktop environment will be Gnome from version 18.04. They will finally abandon bloated unity.11

Coming back to the office after being down with sickness for 3 days. Apparently the two other People on the project doesn't talk together, only when im the middle man making sure they talk, and we got a big test on Monday.....2

Woohoo! I fixed a huge memory leak in our app! ... In one class.
Time for noise cancelling head phones, 80s hacker music, tons of caffeine, and more leak hunting. :)3 -

I met my old school friends today. One of them was apparently showing off his programming skills too much(let's call him X). So much that he(friend X) was comparing Linus Torvalds with himself. And he was telling us that Linux is best because there are so many DEs and customisations and blah blah.
So one of my other friend Y(who's not into computers much) asked him to install Ubuntu on his laptop while we were sitting in cafe.(Y wants to play with command line mainly this semester according to him) So he started complaining that he does not have ISO with him and trying to avoid it.
I said I have kubuntu iso he can flash it right away. Then he(X) said "Kubuntu is too complex for him(Y)".(me in mind : " yeah, just because its a. DE, it becomes complex") So I searched in my phone (faked the search, basically renamed kubuntu iso to Ubuntu iso lol) and gave him " Ubuntu " iso
And this "pro developer" installed that on his laptop and after installation was completed he said that "OMG DUUUDE UNITY IS DEAD, EVEN UBUNTU SWITCHED TO KDE AS DEFAULT DESKTOP ENVIRONMENT, ITS COOL".

The DE life cycle of every Linux hobbyist:
1. Let's work with Unity.... it's so blah
2. Let's check out XFCE.... it does its job, but it needs more zing
3. Let's check out KDE...aah, my poor battery.
4. Let's check out LXDE.... Can you be any more boring?
5. Let's check out Pantheon.... This is perfect, but I'm tired of using a tweak tool to even enable minimize and maximize
6. Let's go to Gnome 3...Ah never mind
7. Let's go to Cinnamon... Blurgh, It reminds me of Windows
8. Let's go to MATE....Hmm, Mutiny layout?!! It reminds me of Unity. Wonder if Unity 8 has made any progress!
9. Go back to Step 1.16 -
So I've taken the first steps into mobile development this past week, I attached two joysticks to a basic unity app to check if touch input was working and I guess I never got around to uninstalling it. so I go to school and finish some class work early and decide, why not check and see what it would take to get my current main Alpha project working. I open my unity folder and see Joystick_Test and someone walking by asks "what's that?" To which I reply tapping on the app "it's a touch screen test, to see if the phone can detect me touching the screen and dragging my fingers. I hand him the phone and he asks why nothing is happening which I respond with "it's just an input test, it's not ment to be anything fancy I just need to program the joysticks and the scripts are still in development" and he hands the phone back and says "your lazy as shit. I can make the controls work in under a minute" and he walks away. It's lunch now and I manage to catch him in the library. I open Unity, and Mono-develop and call him over. I get out of my seat and say "program the left joystick to move around. I'll give you a hint, vector3". He sits in the chair and stares at the screen for a solid minute until I see him type
Console.writeline("hello world");
And he said it would work and just walked away.1 -
So recently completed my first overworked and underpaid freelance job, I'm like totally a developer now right7

OK< been a long time user of Unity.
Tried the latest update as I and others were enthusiastic about creating a joint project of gamers and developers.
As I was building up a started website and we were getting things with Unity ready...BOOM,. They Fuck up the installs.
Not just a minor thing here or there but not finding its own Fucking file locations where it installs shit. You try and say, Hey Unity you fucking twat, install here in this folder.
Boom again, it installs part of it there, and then continues installing shit everywhere else it wants to. Then the assholes at Unity give this Bullshit claim "the bug has been fixed."
Just reinstall.
Fuck you, its never that simple, You have to delete all sorts of fucking files to make sure conflicts from a previous corruption isn't just loaded on top of so it does not fuck up later.
So we did all that from programs, program data, program(x86), AppData Local, Local Low, and Roaming.
For added measure we manually removed all the crap from the registry folders (that was a pain but necessary), and then ran a cleaner to make sure all the left over shit was gone.
Thinking, OK you shit tech MoFo's we are clean and here we go.
HOLY SHIT BALLS, Its fucking worse with the LTS version it recommends and Slow as Fuck with their most recent version which is like 2020 itself, and insane piece of fucking bloated garbage and slower than a brick hard shit without fruit.
So we were going to all go post on the forums, and complain the fix section isn't fixed for shit.
Fuck us running backwards naked through a field of razor grass. Its so overloaded with complaints that they shut down further posts.
What makes this shit worse is we cannot even get the previous fucking versions of the editor before all this to work where our only option is without using the fucking Hub demand is just install 2018.
great if we started coding and testing in that. We cannot get shit where we were at back on track because you cannot fucking backward load an exported saved asset file.
Unity's suggestion? Start over.
Our Suggestion? Stop fucking smoking or using whatever fucking drug you assholes are on, you fucking disabled the gear options so we can resolve shit ourselves, and admit you did that shit and other sneaky piece of shit back stabby, security vulnerable data leak bullshit things to your end users.
Listen to your fucking experienced and long time users and get rid of the Fucking backward stepped hub piece of shit everyone with more brains than whatever piss ant pieces of shit praised that the rest of us have hated from day fucking one!
And while fixing this shit like it should be fucking fixed if you shit head bastards want to continue to exist as a fucking company, overhaul the fucking website or get the fuck out of business with now completely worthless SHIT.
Phew:
Suffice it to say....
We are now considering dealing with the learning curve and post pone our project going with unreal just because of these all around complete fuck ups that herald back to shit games of versions 3.0 and earlier.10 -
Unity3D Game Dev Interview
Interviewer: What is reflection and why would you use it?
Me: Gives overview of system and how I've used it in games before.
Interviewer: Sorry that was a trick question, Reflection is really dangerous and slow. You need to go back and learn the basics.
Me: ???...
A huge portion of Unity is built upon Reflection based systems, the entire Monobehaviour base relies on it. Their events system uses it, animation and timeline. I guess their team needs to go back to the drawing board.
How is this person a senior dev?2 -
While working in Unity i caught this "action" shot of a ragdoll chicken.. Then i couldn't resist...1

Minutes away from Ludum Dare submission closing. Finalizing game build to upload and submit and I get this...!!!

I'm too exhausted to give a shit at this point. Guess I'm out. Still pretty happy with what I managed to make. Had a late start, first LD and I actually managed to make something I guess XD
I'm going to bed T_T6 -
I'm learning Unity! I don't have a lot of experience with C# or game development but it's fairly simple and super interesting so far so I'm excited!

LPT: NEVER accept a freelance job without looking at the project's source first
Client: I have a project made by a company that is now abandoning it, I want you to fix some bugs
Me: Okay, can you:
1) Give me a build to test the current state of the game
2) Tell me what the bugs are
3) Show me the source
4) Tell me your budget
Client: *sends a list of 10 bugs* Here's the APK and to give you the project I'll need you to sign an NDA
Me: Sure...
*tests build*
*sees at least 20 bugs*
*still downloading source*
*bugs look quite easy to fix should be done under an hour*
Me: Okay, so, I can fix each bug for $10 and I can do 2 today
Client: Okay can you fix 8 bugs today for $40??
*sigh*
Me: No I cannot.
Client: okay then 2 today for $20 is fine, I want a refund if you can't fix them today
*sigh*
Me: Look dude, this isn't the first time I am doing this, aight? I'll fix the bugs today you can pay me after check they are done, savvy?
Client: okay
*source is downloaded*
*literal apes wrote the scripts, commented out code EVERYWHERE
Debug logs after every line printing every frame causing FPS drops, empty objects in the scene
multiple unused UI objects
everything is spaghetti*
*give up, after 2 hours of hell*
*tfw averted an order cancellation by not taking the order and telling client that they can pay me after I am done*
Attached is an image of a level object pool
It's an array with each element representing a level.
The numbers and "Final" are ids for objects in an object pool
The whole string is .Split(',') into an array (RIP MEMORY BTW) and then a loop goes through each element in the split array and instantiates the object from an object pool5 -

Being an apprentice programmer in a Ludum Dare (Create a game in 72h) that knows more than the official programmer, and have an artist in the group who makes THIS PIECES OF ART!
She didn't even had a computer to work with it, neither she asked for one to the event, so eventually she used mine... And I could not do my work.
Did I mentioned that she used PAINT to color the images?
This is a long, looong story, I'll do the complete version soon...

I fucking HATE when people tell me:
"Oh you are using Unity? What kind of dumb shit uses Unity! Isnt its only purpose to make shovelware and shit?!"
THIS MAKES ME FURIOS AT MOST POINTS! AND I WANT TO PUNCH THOSE DIPWIT COCKS WHO ALWAYS THINK ANYTHING OTHER THAN UNITY IS GOOD, IN THE FUCKING FACE! TWICE!

Unity: Fam you have errors.
VisualStudio: Nah fam you're all good.
U: You can't build until you fix your errors.
V: What errors lol
Me: -
Hey, Unity!
I love you and how your bug system works, but can you polish your errors?
I don't have any experience in programming and I am only a level designer.
I have no idea what this error meant so I begged to my boss crying that this FATAL error popped up.
Then my boss comforted me with pizza and coke.
I just realized that my boss is better than Unity.
I'm sorry, Unity. I was just about to buy the Unity license, but I changed my mind to just use the [personal edition and hack the dark theme by hex edit.
Best regards,
cozyplanes

AHH! There's so many cool things to program and so many ideas! not enough time to learn. Right now I'm trying to create my first mobile game in Unity using C# and a note taking app for Android with Java, it's melting my head!6
-
I'm making an educational game for a school project.
What I thought I had to do:
Write complex code
Learn to animate
Make all resources by myself
What i do:
Drag and drop stuff into unity.
Moving arrows around.
Watch tutorials.
Im 3 weeks ahead of my planing... After 6 days.
No wonder there are so many 3rd class unity games -
!multirant
1. MonoDevelop
Installed Unity for a game I'm working on. Realized I didn't reinstall VS when my SSD got corrupted. Didn't install VS plugin w/ Unity.
So now I have MonoDevelop. It's not a bad editor, but PLEASE. IF YOU ARE GOING TO HIGHLIGHT A FUNCTION WITH RED BECAUSE IT DOESNT EXIST IN THE CLASS, THEN TELL ME, WHAT THE FUCK EXISTS IN THE CLASS!
2. UnityJS
Unity's JS implementation is terrible.
First, let's throw basic syntax shit out on the window. string.toUpperCase? Nah, let's make it string.ToUpperCase to annoy the shit out of devs.
AND SOME OF THE STANDARD FUNCTIONS ARENT EVEN FUCKING WORKING!
Need to use parseInt(string, 2)? WELL GO FUCK YOURSELF, BECAUSE WE DIDNT IMPLEMENT THAT SHIT.
...or use C# I guess...
FUCK UNITY.

NEVER take a shot of vodka every time Unity (on Mac) crashes...

Really? Is this the Ubuntu Unity logo? Tech journalists honestly, if you want to write about new tech things write properly with proper information and relevant images. No dev will read that article if you do this kind of blunder.4

Me searching on the internet how to fix my error. After a long time of searching with no results...I searched for:

Got a mini project assignment in college. We decided to make a game using Unity that recgonizes sign language gestures from Leap Motion.
I asked my colleague to make the function to compare the hand gesture, and I'll do the rest of the game. One more friend does the documentations and reports.
Three weeks passed, asked for the code but he said he hasn't finished it yet. I told him to ask me if he has any problems with it.
He sent me this 24 hrs before the deadline.
Me and my other friend died on the spot.
I screamed at him the whole night on the phone call whilsth trying to do his part in just 3 hours...
Needless to say, we didn't finish the project on time.rant compscistudent unity why are we still here just to suffer wk125 student foreach leap motion forloop assignments why do i even try -
Is it only me or does Unity really force people to write ugly code?
Sometimes I think to my self : " just go and write your god damn own fuckin engine"
But then I sit back and realize that I'd never finish a game that way.
Love & Hate Unity !3 -
Big win today. Set up a custom motion capture pipeline for Unity using my Vive/controllers today. Quote a bit of scripting but I went from nothing to complete animation reel for our character model in a single day.
Successful day for once. I can sleep well tonight.2 -
I've been creating a game in Unity and I made sure to tell all my friends, but now every other day when I see them they ask me if they can play it. It gets a bit old, I try to explain this is a very long-term project and there's nothing to play until it's almost complete. Only a few of them get the memo.12
-
Been drinking like a litre of beer yesterday after a long day of work, came home like at 2.35 AM.
Today's gonna be a long day and I only slept 6h40m and I'm still feeling drunk.
What an awesome way to start working!
Also, making an AR project in unity, doing stuff I dunno how to do11 -
Programming opened my mind to logical thinking and honestly made me a less impulsive and more analytical person in almost every regard.
-
FUCK YOU, UNITY.
The fucking UI lag causes mouse events in the editor to aggregate and act fucking weird when it's randomly reloading scripts and shit.
I just needed to move some assets into another folder. I control clicked a few scripts at the same time Unity decided to recompile them. It ended up thinking I was making a box selection and then, weirdly, some mouse combo that duplicates scripts (didn't even know that existed).
Okay, whatever, nbd. I just control clicked the other scripts (all with `1` postfixes) to delete them. No problemo, right click, delete.
FUCKING UNITY LAGGED, THOUGHT I BOX-SELECTED AGAIN, AND DELETED EVERYTHING IN THE GOD DAMNED FUCKING FOLDER. HOURS OF WORK. JUST GONE.
FUCK YOU UNITY. YOU'VE CRASHED THREE TIMES THIS WEEK AND NOW THIS. FUCK YOU.16 -
I'd love to learn unity or UE4 properly and write a little 3D indie game. Written a few in 2 dimensions but the step up to 3 is daunting. Plus I don't know blender or Maya...yet4
-
I was working on a game, and my monitor randomly blacked out and my computer stopped dead. My lights were still on so it wasn't a power cut. I look at my computer and I noticed it's completely covered in Diet Coke. So, I take it apart and cleaned them inside out, whilst I waited for any drying. I stole my dad's desktop and just put the hard drive in. Continued coding. So I guess the moral of the story, don't spill Coke on your PC.2
-
Thank you unity, for not having an undo feature for files or something lice a recycle bin. You nailed it. You made this days work go wasted3
-
Not really a rant, but:
Me, programming in unity using C#: well if I add that library, My life will get a little bit easier, but the final APK will be 2MB heavier because of it.
WebDev who never used compiled programming languages: can't you just minify it?
Me:7 -
I quite like Unity.
It's a good engine, BUT....
I despise doing UI in it, it's just so tedious to make everything work and show up.
In the past I didn't mind but then I learned about XAML in WPF, UWP and Xamarin. XAML works very nice with the MVVM pattern (even if you do that lazily) with the data binding.
So now I'm working on my own data binding, which is both fun and saddening (because it's not in there already)1 -
I just wanted to quickly install a little Ubuntu on my notebook for some testing.
And here I am hours later installing unity themes.
I think I could get used to this.7 -
I love, love, LOVE Unity Engine!!!
Great tutorials, good documentation, helpful community, easy to understand interface...
It's all just... so beautiful.
I swear to god that I'm not shilling for them, I'm just so happy that, as a generally lazy SOB, I've been working for about 10+ hours now in one sitting, and I'm still not bored or frustrated that I don't get something.
God bless you Unity, I might actually make something outta myself...maybe...someday.9 -
A wild project appears!
The deadline is set in two months.
It's a 3D environment interactive app with some oil drilling models and other stuff, for a stand on a show. It needs to look nice, but The Company we're working for needs to figure out where the fuck their product is located on those machines. Think tiny pipes, O-rings etc.
I prepare a build in the first couple of days for The Company to figure shit out.
Management holds the build back because:
> the ocean waves are going the other way
> the underwater area doesn't look so nice
> the antialiasing could be better
> one pipe is 5cm off center
> the sky is not blue enough
> the drillship propellers are pointed the wrong way
> one icon is too far to the right
> the shadows could use some work
> there are shadows on the seabed
> some flickering on ambient occlusion
> it loads too slow
> one random object is flipped on it's Z axis
> it's too green
> camera locks up if you move about 2km out of the range
> the name of the build should represent the date of the build
> the name of the build SHOULDN'T be anything else than just a simple three-word name, no dates because their environment doesn't allow apps that are not allowed (by name) by admin
> lots more random things that won't prevent them from using the app
I'm only a month late, but it's good progress. In about a week I hope we can get some feedback if we can use those models at all and what to showcase.
Then I can work on the basic functionality. And then it's a simple case of time travel to meet the deadline.2 -
My lessons both come from my current side project (I will share it with you in a week or two, the website isn't finished yet):
1. Every project comes to the point where it hurts to continue. Keep pushing, the result is worth it.
2. You aren't as good as you thought you were when you started, but you'll be better than you ever were when you finish.
3. Sometimes, there's more points to a list than you'd expect.
4. One hour per day is easier than five hours a week.
How?
Well. I started out my project knowing some C#, but Jack shit about unity. I know most of what I might build will end up being shit I'm gonna regret, refactor and recycle later. But I don't give a fuck. Doing it is better than planning it.
It sometimes hurts to get rid of a carefully planned algorithm that took hours to build because it fails in practice. But it's the right thing to do.
Never plan too much. If I'd have planned this project out, I wouldn't even have started with what I'm good at: write code, break shit and experiment.
It's easier to progress slowly but steady. Look at some awesome games that have been worked on for ages while the public had their say (RimWorld, Project Zomboid, Dwarf Fortress...) as opposed to those that are developed behind closed doors and rushed to the market before Christmas or some other major event (Mafia 3, Fallout 76, Fallout 4 VR...). Progress slowly, deploy early, push often. And the one hour per day approach is a good way to do this. -
My first experience with any kind of development was in a web mastering class in high school. I got super into it and started going really far ahead in the course materials.
During the second semester most students in the class were not interested at all so I decided to start a business of selling custom tailored assignments to about half the class. It didn't make me rich of course, but it felt good being the HTML / CSS god in the class.
The best part honestly was getting caught. The principal was so impressed at the amount of extra work I'd been doing that he just gave me a detention. Thanks Mr. Murray, for being so cool and not putting me down for doing what I love. -
The response to Unity Tiny seems to be mostly "wow such small". I guess it shows just how bloated software is these days...4
-
I'm installing Unity. Choosing the "sign in with Google" option, this leads to a screen asking for my Google account and password - *inside the installer*. No external browser.
What made them think it's legitimate? Why can't they just open my web browser for this? Why should I trust them with my email password?4 -
We use Unity in university to display the workings of algorithms.
Cus you know.. a little cross-platform 2d webgl is not enough.. we need this whole friggin engine with an IDE and its 1000 buttons and switches and need for an account and C#...2 -
So me and my friend started doing a video game project. To be honest I was expecting it to be nothing but pain and suffer.
But it turned out to be really fun experience for both of us (plus I’m learning Unity) 😁 -

Today, a guy contacted me on upwork to fix his iOS game which was crashing.
So I asked him to put it on github so I can clone it and push the fixes.
For some reason he said it was not possible for him to put it on github,so he uploaded it on Dropbox and sent me the link.
How the fuck am I supposed to fix that 700mb project and send it back ? Again upload it on some cloud ?
AaaaGhhhh !!!!3 -
What game engine would you recommend to an indie developer? The type who can't afford a fucking server to run the bloated and buggy unity editor but is actually a developer so isn't afraid of typing.
I've had enough of the improper sandboxing (will crash bc of game scripts), tempfile-based crash-unaware instance tracking (won't restart afterwards) and lack of UI scaling (seriously, that's like accessibility/retina support basics) that is the unity editor. If they had command line tools I'd use them happily.11 -
When you are developing your game and you realise that there exist a game on the same platform which can do this. 😂1

I had a team lead once that would come into my office multiple times a day to sit and talk. Not about work. Not even about development. Just to talk.3

Unity is the best UI ever! It rocks the UX world.
Windows 10 with unity interface would be purrfect.4 -
I'm at DreamHack Dallas, and I just saw a guy at his booth open Unity, fix a bug, and rebuild the game.
No judgment from me brah, I get it,
but it is nice not to be my broken demo for a change.3 -
Has anyone used Unity for Linux? I was thrilled when I found out about it today, and everything seems to work really well. There's is one thing that's bothering me though. I can't seem to resize undocked panels, and docked panels cause a crap ton of lag when resized. Running Ubuntu 18.04.
Also, what editor do you use for Unity? VS Code is officially supported by Unity and is something I use on a daily basis.11 -
Upgrading Unity with petrifying dread, contemplating the shit loads of work I have to do in order to fix my project as it used depricated APIs.4

Putting every file, even SHADER CACHES (that huge cyan flower here (this illustration was made with "gource"), yes, every of those tiny little dots is a file) or even complete libraries into their git repository.2

Unity for Linux actually works 🤟🤟🤟
Last time I checked it didn’t go well at all. Has been years ago though..
Now lets start building some 3D stuff.6 -
When the management always knows better that something IS possible, and if you're wrong they just tell you to ask the other dev on the team...

Do not trust Unity Collab.
Been using unity collab as a VCS for months on a project, regularly saving the files, working well.
Today i decided to refactor some code but lost track of some things, so i reverted to a version i checked in 2h before.
Unity replaced my files with the stable build back then, except... half of the files were missing. of course no undo functionality.
months of work were simply not saved in collab. no version had these files, i did modify them regularly and they never caused collab issues.
how can a company not make the vcs they add for their main product work to its minimal requirements?!
Im not sure how i could motivate myself to fix this mess. fuck this trash company, cant have a single project without major issues.2 -
An example of bad documentation? Unity. It has a list of poorly described methods of deprecated classes. The only reasonable documentation is the community. Docommunitation.10

I want to get into game dev, but don't know which engine to choose, Unreal or Unity. Both would be free, because Unreal is free for students. I already know C++, but I think it depends more on the API than the language itself. Maybe I would like to create games for Android too.
Which one would you recommend? Any experience?6 -
Just ran "rm -rf <project_folder>" instead of "rm -rf <project_folder>/Library/PackageCache"
I'm almost afraid to open the project itself right now
I stopped it like a second later, but still it has deleted some project configuration :(6 -

Hey guys!
So a few days ago I started the #100DaysOfCode Challenge but at the end of the first day I got annoyed by realizing how frustrating the character limit on Twitter can be.
So I started a blog where I could say whatever I want withiut any limits.
Then, yesterday, I got two projects to make as a final project for my game development lab. So I decide while making it to also write a tutorial on it!
I'm currently on the second part and I would really really reaaaaally LOVE some feedback since it's the first time I write a blog and tutorials 😅 And well, I believe the style is kinda different from the usual blog, so I would love to know what you think about it.
Also any ideas and suggestions will be extremely appreciated!
You can find the blog at https://blog.kamaropoulos.tk

This year I could join the "Game Graphics" for my elective classes. After seeing that we are split almost exactly in half (graphics design and programmers) our tutor (graphic with 20+ exp in the field, worked on few Call of Duty titles and more) decided that instead of forcing everyone to draw something, we will be making games in groups.
So me, and my friend were grouped with two girls from graphic. I have to say, working close with them was an eyes-opening experience. They don't think like me, they don't see like me and they interpret everything different.
Anyway, as most experienced Unity dev (... Yeaaaah, one game self made and published) I was chosen to get rest of the programmers up to speed. Luckily no one objected and they did what I wanted them to do, so it wasn't bad.
Today was supposedly the last day to present finished prototype. After three weeks staying up till 1 am, working on this project, two other, and nornal job, it was supposed to end. But, no one was really ready. So tutor decided that we will only do this project, an 2D platformer, instead of two, this and 3D game.
While walking around and checking the progress he stayed with us at least two times, watching what we were doing. Since last two weeks were really hectic, we were finishing up animations, adding some polish and such. When he came to us for the second time, he played our prototype. He's a bit older guy, somewhere around his 60, and one could see he wasn't prepared for hard gameplay I presented him with my first level design ever.
He told us his feedback, about how hard it is and not really intuitive, but in the end, he was satisfied. We have made really great progress and brought him something he could play and finish. Which was more than most of other groups had at today. And, as a cherry on the top, he complimented me as a group chief. I don't remember the last time someone complimented my work. The feeling was... Incredible. Touching even.
So, yeah. My hard work wasn't in vain, even though we now have time till the end of the semester. Everyone in my team has given their all and now we can rest for a bit, while others are catching up. Right now I only have to polish some mechanics, rework a bit of level design and add tutorial, while girls from graphic design will be working on better background and sprites.
All in all, it was a pretty good day.6 -
Made a game, it was like tetris but you had to connect at least 3 blocks of the same colour.
I worked on it for like a month, about 50h overall, and it was downloaded by 10-11 people all over the world and then removed after like an year or so for no real reason.
I then stopped making games.
I was too depressed by the whole thing3 -
Spent 2 hours wondering why Unity Engine sees my 2 joysticks as Joystick 1 and Joystick 5 (or 6 depending on a UBS port).
Turns out, for some reason, Unity remembers ALL the ports that were ever used (even with the usb extender). That's documented...exactly nowhere. Ok, at least I figured that out, but what am I gonna do about it? Nothing, there's no way to change the order.
So after a quick nervous breakdown, and a cigarette break, I decided to build and run the game, just to see how it looks, and...what's this?
Everything's working! Unity removes all the joysticks from it's array and puts only active ones in the right order and that too is documented...NOWHERE!
Ugh... Unity I still love you, but god damn, GET YOUR SHIT TOGETHER!!!
Needless to say, this day is an emotional roller coaster.1 -
It's 1:20 AM and after about 5 hours of pushing and tugging I managed to finally get Unity Hybrid ECS working. Every guide on the internet is filled with outdated crap, and one of the last results (which is not mentioned in the official docs) is Unity's in-house samples, which are up-to-date. And it's actually really fucking simple.
I'm experiencing an emotion that's right somewhere in the middle of euphoria and bloodrage. But at least I can now make steps towards integrating ECS into my game.
edit: On a related note; is there still a difference between hybrid and pure ECS? The only way I can see people actually doing this is by converting their GameObjects to entities with a script in the Entities package, and then squishing pure IComponentData's in ComponentSystems.2 -
So I created a new repo, with fisheye effect for Unity. It's not optimized enough for games, but for simulation purposes I think it's useful.
https://github.com/FullMetalNicky/... -
Recently i learned about pipes in C#. I made 2 simple console apps(client and server) in visual studio. They work flawlessly. After that i made plugin for unity that uses those pipes. (because i want to crunch numbers in .net 4.7 app and display results in unity). Every function in my plugin is wrapped in try-catch block. Unity frezzes/crashes everytime i try to use my plugin 😥1

Hey devrant!, I'm currently developing a hacker game! herer is a little sneak peak all the graphics are temp will be changed as soon as i get some cash! enjoy!14

Just spent the last few days learning about unity's custom editor stuff.
Gotta say it's really fun making tools that help setup stuff a lot easier
The thing I made has a bunch of actions and you randomize the action thats picked. You give each action a % chance and even have a % decrease when the action is used.
I ended up adding in a simulator in the inspector so you can test without even running the game :D pretty happy with the result! -
Eclipse with ADT. Never again. I'm so glad Google and JetBrains have put together a really great environment for Android development.
-
Suddenly remembering that you're in a two week game jam and you've only got 3 days to put something together!4

Heyo, it's me. That fool who always says shit about unity.(:
So.. i just got my first real hands-on down, and phew, i gotta say.. I overestimated that heap of bullshit.
It's not like there are basic concepts of gamedev, framebased ticking and stuff like that since before the fucking gameboy - nope - let's do shit different. More ... Shit. First, we invent something new. Lets call it "prefab". None of these fuckers is going to know what that shit is.
What next.. oh the new-keyword. That's bullshit, all languages use it. Lets make Instanciate(). That's the stuff.
On we go, scenes. Most shit is statically created beforehand and used by scripts glued to stuff. Hell that so neat actually. Creating materials beforehand and then we can just load em!(:
NOPE. yo bro your Material where u used one of those loading-methods is null. We ain't telling you whats wrong, cus you know.. Load() returning null is like completely normal, why throwing an exception?
Oh and btw, it needs to be in ./Resources/, but it wont make any difference.
So now you want to google your problem, eh? Forget it. The Forums only answer on stuff like "how to add 2 numbers in unity" and the guide shows you how you did it, but they say it works that way.
Dude holy shit, of course this is a buhuuu i don't know how to do shit rant because i feel like good 8-10 years of dev experience collected while not doing homework for school were for fucking nothing.:b
And i have to use it.
Subjective Opinion: Unity was made by crackheads.7 -
Ok, so, serious question.
How the frick do you time a music game properly?
IN C#?
...Ok, maybe in C# it's just impossible, isn't it? Because I've done a metronome, it kinda works, but it's... wobbly... Because the thread stops every time the music effect is being played.
And also how do you make the notes...? ...I should design an entire editor for charts/maps, I guess, but how do I make that in C#?
So maybe I should try in Unity?
What do you think? I want to make a music game so bad ;–;8 -
Developing an app in Unity, gotta add some icons, my boss tells me unironically:
- "hey, use font-awesome!"
Yeah, right, like I can use HTML tags into unity or go check the specific code for the specific symbol, are you out of your mind?7 -
First post here...Here's a funny thing that happened to me yesterday. I'm with my friend, we're both taking a break from school, and he comes up to me and mentions how he wants to make 3d games. Conversation goes a bit like this:
Friend: "Hey, I found this 3d model website. I'm thinking of using it for my 3d game."
He was already making a 2d game at this point, so I assumed he just gave up on it.
Me: "Well...do you have Unity?"
Friend: "Yes."
Me: "Well if you're going to make a game on there [stuff about c#]"
Friend insists he can easily make this. I tell him it would take years on end to learn C# and make a good game with it. And then he says something I never wanted to hear.
Friend: "Actually, no. You ever heard of Dani? D-A-N-I? He made a game in 2 weeks. He's actually making a new game and you should wishlist it on steam blah blah yatta yatta."
This guy believed someone else who was previously a game developer (if i recall) learned an entire programming language and engine in two weeks. He could've, but to me that seems seriously outrageous to someone who doesn't even know a smidge of programming.
He then advertised his YouTube channel and his games and brought down my arguments like "he probably had previous knowledge" completely. This guy doesn't even know where to start with C#. Really, all I could do after that was mention three.js (oh wow another JavaScript library, exciting), show him a game Google made with said library, and then said good luck...
Worst thing is, he uses Scratch to make games. And he genuinely thinks that is a real programming language.
That's it for my first post, thank you very much for reading :)6 -
So I was messing around in unity, as you do. And I made an explosion mechanic platformer. The scripts were all working well. I saved it for the day.
The next day I booted unity and my scripts were gone, and the scene switcher won't work.
So I mean, partly my fault. Partly google drive's fault and partly unity's fault.6 -
Me and a friend starting to program a game in Unity, he's worried and I think we will ace it! How f***ed are we? (5 years of website development experience each)8
-
So I upgraded my project to a new version of unity.
And my character stopped jumping.
And then it started jumping.
And stopped.
And started.
After 2 hours of debugging I found out that the RigidBody2D editor fucks up physics.
WTH2 -
fuck, took me a whole hour to debug an issue in my game that causes the start menu to switch right to the game itself, only after an hour i realized that i named the start game method as a default start ( a default method that executes at the very start of the scene). feeling so dumb now.
-
Unity has a nice feature where if you search for an item in your hierarchy, it fades to white as if it just crashed.
Thanks for the heart attack, Unity! Maybe this serves as a reminder to save frequently because it *does* crash a lot.3 -
Making a VR app.
It must work with:
- pico VR
- oculus go
- oculus gear
- Android (standard mobile
- iOS
Now, except for iOS they all work with android, which make things way easier.
Now guess where most of the troubles are?
FUCKING IOS, I just fucking believe iOS even inverts the whole fucking textures while using Unity+GVR
WHY THE FUCK DOES IT EVEN HAPPEN?
I have 4 different projects to build 5 different Apps
Fuck my work6 -
Well, I guess even googles listing of solutions on the fly from external websites doesnt always work perfectly..1
-
Accidently created a folder called "assets" next to my "Assets" folder, deleted it from MonoDevelop and instead it deleted both of the folders... irrecoverably...
Maybe spent about a year on that project and I lost 6 months progress...
Like how did it even manage to delete my folder irrecoverably?!?!1 -
Sorry guys for the lack of content on the stream last week. I'll be back with more fire than ever I promise.2
-
I had to switch machines in class. To continue working on my project, I needed to install 17 gb worth of Unity 2019 bullshit. Guess what? They removed the progress bar in the move to Unity Hub. Now I just get "Installing..." This seems minor, until I don't know if I'll be working in two minutes or two fucking days. What the fuck, Unity? Why would you remove a fucking progress bar?2
-
My family literally knows nothing about development, programming, computer science. It's bad. The closest anyone in my family has come to understanding is a distant cousin, who is an IT lead in Healthcare. His mother told him to call me because some fucking piece of shit at his job purposefully mucked up an internal ASP.net app on his way out. Sure, I had nothing better to do than to phone debug your shitty app with zero context. Great.
My wife is the one who comes closest to understanding in my immediate family* but even she admits when I come home ranting that she has absolutely zero idea what I'm saying.
It great though because I get to use her as a living rubber duck that just stares at me with a blank expression. Then at the end of describing a complex problem I'm trying to sort out she just replies with some encouraging thing like, "I'm certain you'll figure it out."
Fuck this is a long rant. Sorry. I better get back to work. -
Today I realized that compilers are children, and must be treated as such. Generally, you might tend to expect a language to follow the same rules consistently, but oh how wrong you are, my sweet summer child.
I have a framework that I've been reusing across several personal Unity3d projects for a while, and all was well. This week, I was tasked with creating a PoC that combines a web app with Unity WebGL for data visualization. My framework has a ton of useful stuff helped me create the PoC very quickly, and all was well.
Come 3 days ago and there's one last piece that isn't working for some reason. It almost appears that this one bit of code isn't executing at all. Today, after countless hours of swearing at the computer and banging my head against the wall, I realized that the WebGL compiler has a different implementation for the method that checks assignability of types. An implementation that has different rules than everything else. An implementation that has no documentation about this discrepancy anywhere. I have no words.
tl;dr: The language changed the rules on me. Fuck me right?1 -
Lovely unity.
I kept building apps for android for the WHOLE day, then I just change the app version and what do I get?
No android SDK version is installed anymore, apparently.
Now I'll just have to wait like 3-4h to download everything back again.7 -
Regarding my previous rant where I shit talked about ubuntu 17.10
So instead of downgrading I tried a last chance (why not, system was fucked already) by installing unity, yes the same shit that ubuntu team removed from ubuntu 17.10 as major upgrade.
Well, it turns out gnome shell was taking more than half of my cpu in idle state and this unity barely reaches above 10%
Life lesson learnt: not every upgrade is better
Same goes for android studio, let's save it for another rant10 -
FUCK ME IN MY INDICES.
FUCK THE GPUS IN THEIR INDICES.
I mean... I understand (roughly) why the meshes are sent to gpu in this form, but at the same time...
...there's a reason why first thing I did when I was coding my procedural geometry generation library, was abstracting away all of that stuff...
...sadly, as many useful things, when I was looking for that lib on the start of this contract, I couldn't find it. and I was like "doesn't matter, this is a simple thing, using the library would be just a lazy overkill anyway".
well, fuck.
two hours of playing around with two fucking triangles, trying to figure out which indexes are pointing to the correct vertices in a list containing FOUR outline paths.
(lower inner, upper inner, lower outer, upper outer, exacly in this order).
i mean, yeah, it's actually pretty straightforward stuff... for someone not as dumb as me =D
you just have two offsets, one that jumps you to start of the upper path, another that jumps you to the start of the outer path, then it's just
0 + upOffset to get the vertex extruded upwards from the zeroth of the inner path, or
0 + outOffset to get the zeroth from the outer outline, or
0 + outOffset + upOffset, to get the one extruded from zeroth outer vertex...
and so on.
simple stuff, then you just replace the zero with loop control var, put them in the right order, and voilá! walls!
except... whatever, why am I describing in such detail, not necessary, you're not my rubber duck =D
in short, figuring out which fuckin vertex is which, when the list contains ...well, any number of points, and you need to plug the gap between last and first points of the paths, where you need to wrap around the list...
...has proven to be surprisingly hard for me.
funny how much I love doing these things with meshes, despite how bad I am at doing them, which makes me hate doing them despite loving it =D2 -
Earlier today I spend 3 hours that included a nap and cleaning the house to try to clear my head and figure out why my Unity multiplayer code wasn't translating properly to local. Turns out a certain function has no problem existing in update in multiplayer but wants to be in fixedupdate in local... Productive day.
-
When you're a Youtuber and you're trying to grow your channel by making Unity tutorials. Oh the struggle :')3
-
>First day back at work.
>Boss tells me something is totally fucked up on an app we've been developing for the past 2 years
>see the bug, can't really understand why, but looks like it's a conversion issue (from string to float)
>realize that on some phones, the conversion of the number "9.1234" becomes "91234" and then after calculations, becomes "9123,4" which of course fucks everything up
>looking through it and realize that from the latest version on, unity convers string based on current culture
>still trying to figure out how to fucking specify that it must use english culture all over the place1 -
Is it a good idea to develop non game app in Unity? Asking because I got an idea for a app and I know Unity very well. Way better than Xamarin for instance.3
-
Why the fICKITY FUCK CANT UNITY DO WHAT ITS DING DANG JOB YO I'M JUST TRYING TO SIMULATE AUTONOMOUS AGENTS NOT AGENTS FROM HELL YOU FEEL ME
-
To use Unity with VS you have to get Unity Build Tools as a plugin.
Alright, I'll download that.
Oh but now there's an error with connecting to unity, I need to get a newer VS and switch to the 2018 version of the engine.
Ok fine that's annoying but I guess I might as well upgrade.
Oh now there's no Intellisense? I guess I need to reload my project.
Oh what's this? Some major build error due to a missing component from Vs 2015?
This is getting stupid, fine let me install it.
Oh but to install the component you need to rerun the installer for VS, fine I'll redownload that.
Oh but apparently the installer _I JUST DOWNLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO_ is outdated and needs to be upgraded. I can't _not_ update the installer and still install the components because that would be stupid, why would we let the developer decide what versions to use obviously they don't know what they're doing I mean it's not like they know how to use computers?
To get simple code completion, let's force developers to download an installer that then needs to be updated to install a component for this giant IDE that also requires the 2015 version of the IDE to be installed alongside a special plugin and patch designed for a specific game engine.
All this. For fucking code completion. I can't even get Intellisense to work in VSCode without fixing the issue since the C# extension in VSCode just binds to Visual Studio tools and runs the same shit with a different GUI.10 -
Hey guys, Thanks for the feedback last time round. I have made quite a few changes to the gameplay I think you will like. Please check out my latest gameplay video and let me know what you think :)

I want tutorials that don't undermine people who have experience in programming, but are new to the field
Example: unity tutorials
This is an int, it represents an integer
I know that, show me how unity actually works, how to make the ball roll3 -
So I'm writing a function in Unity3D that walks a rectangular grid. At one place in the code, I got the x+y coordinates backwards, which caused the function to infinitely loop between two coordinates.
Not seeing a way to kill the loop, I looked it up on Google. The suggestions I get are. . .
1. You need to kill the Unity3D task and lose your edits because the environment and the player run on the same thread.
2. You can pay ten bucks for an extension that lets you break out of infinite loops.
3. You should really avoid writing infinite loops. That's just bad form.
SERIOUSLY?1 -
Godot Engine - great open source alternative to Unity, powerful with basically anything you need for game dev and with great community,
VS Community and VS Code for more serious things, because they're pretty pretty powerful and extendable.
Oh and Krita is kinda cool, but I'm not much of an art guy1 -
Just reinstalled my work machine and decided to customize Unity a bit....
Aaaand I'm reinstalling again..
Ended up not being able to login with three screens, two worked fine though..
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ -
Working on a game in Unity for a school project, spent several hours trying to implement a feature... successfully implemented it... only to realize that the feature does something very different than I thought it did.
I thought LoadSceneMode.Additive loaded scenes into memory in the background so I could just switch to them for faster load times... nope, it loads the scenes and just stacks them on top of each other or something like that... Unless I'm still misunderstanding...4 -
I feel hopeless after Unity fails to start/run under your primary user but works fine using guest user and other user in the system. And i did my research to fix it, but none seems to work. :(
The last thing i did to my laptop that might cause the error is executed the commands below:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade6 -
Don't you love it when a network library is advertised as easy to use and quick to set up but the lack of proper documentation escalates the issue to a weekend long adventure about finding out how to do shit?
The Github wiki is full of small use case examples but none explain how to use the lib from ground up and everything is handled by an UI-based helper scene which you can't use anyways since the whole thing is supposed to run headless.7 -
build up the apk like 3 times, just to be sure before the publishing ;)
(now it's out, it is Bongville)1 -
Last night I was up until 3am because the fucking unity and the fucking Android SDK can't put together an structure without mi intervention.
It appears that since SDK 23 Google decided to move some libraries from tools to build-tools, but unity keeps trying to find that library in tools, obviously this error doesn't have any specific documentation and i spend around 5 hours downloading SDKs and trying to figure out what happen, till I found one tiny post in unity forum with only one answer.
I mean, on one side, this has changed since android 23 and the folks in unity can't change his fucking compiler yet, and on the other side, why the fuck Google change libraries from one place to another
Also, as a note to Google, your new system for SDK-only download its super shitty and full of problems, I don't know why you change it.1 -
Making a simple 2d game in unity for a friend:
Never used unity or C#, but this looks easy. Gravity is already there, background is drag and drop, etc. That shit is fucking easy.
I think the hardest thing is going to be the textures, and inkscape got my back on that!
Anyway, I really need to sleep but I’m just reading the tutorial!
LET ME SLEEP FUCKING DEV BRAIN!2 -
Testing out VR without your own VR equipment is a pain.
The glasses are not much of a problem, since you can first develop using the google cardboard SDK and test it with your phone.
It's the controllers that are a pain to test. Luckily vrtk made something that simulates the controllers, which can be controlled with the keyboard.
The controls are very uncomfortable, this is not their fault; you can't really emulate movement easily with a keyboard. -
Happy halloween!
My halloween schedule
1. Start 3 new game projects
2. Study f***ing C for the test in coming Saturday and Sunday
3. Study math for the test in coming Sunday
4. Play werewolf in codrTalk (hopefully)
5. Start my f***ing logo after a disasterous fail.2 -
Building with Unity3D a VR app for Oculus Gear & Oculus Go
While testing the app, it must have a certain tag in the AndroidManifest and it just works flawlessly
As you upload it to the stores, that tag has to be removed because reasons (?)
Can't you just remove it by yourself, you fucking Samsung? -
Worst mistake? Well nothing to bad since it only affected me. Tried out of curiosity to instantate an object every frame in unity that ran an infinite loop every frame. It crashed not only unity but also my computer resulting in about an hour of lost work :P
-
So I got my stress with unity settled a bit..
But what the fuck are these default coordinates on like every new object in the scene, using 2D?
Shit like (-0.4876651, -0.02003769, 0.0546875) dafuq.:D -
Maybe some of you guys can help me out with this.
I'm having trouble using GitHub for Unity with a repository that I have associated with an organisation.
In GitKraken I have to authorise the app for it to be usable with the repository, but I can't seem to find any simple way to do this with GitHub for Unity.
Anyone else here who's had the same issue, and knows a fix?5 -
Spent hours debugging and realise Object should have been object. Thanks documentation and Unity error messages!!1

As a long time Ubuntu user, last month I upgraded from Xenial to Bionic to try the new Gnome based desktop.
At first I thought it was a good transition, everything was working fine, beautiful UI, nice animations, so I installed all my tools and started the real work... then the problems started. The memory usage was always very high and only getting higher, the animations were stuttering and laggy, and it was having an unrecoverable freeze at least twice a week. Searching the web I was seeing more and more people complaining about freezes, lags, bugs, memory leaks, password input field bugs... damn, how I missed Unity! That was it, Gnome Shell made me miss Unity more and more.
This week I installed Unity 7 and purged Gnome Shell from Bionic. Now I'm happy again!
It's so good to be free of the anxiety caused by the lack of stability of the system, so good to know that the system will not break or freeze if I'm doing a resource intensive task. Now he sh** is working fast and stable, and I'm here wondering why such a good DE could be dumped for something so buggy like Gnome.1 -
Why Unity, why did you decide to need a graphic card from 3080 to run smoothly?!?! Even in low graphics configuration...3

ughhhhhh
so i do multiple aspects of development, including frontend, and backend. i'm trying to get back into game development (specifically 3d) and can't make heads or tail of blender.

Woow I am amazed. Just started learning c# in combination with Unity and I am already loving it. It is much like Java so for me it is easy to understand and it works increddibly well with callbacks and getters / setters!1 -
:D
This one is funny for me because my current team lead and I have a really comical dynamic regarding reviews.
I can't say I've ever really had a bad experience but I brought up one stand up about how he had rejected my PR and that he was probably just going to reject the next one. So now it's this joke if I get a PR through in one review (which is usually).
One time he spiked a ping pong ball towards me in a match and I replied, "Hey whoa man, this isn't a code review calm down!". 😂 -
So any unity dev has advice, documents, tutorial suggestions on creating resuable libraries, packages?
I'm working on a library for the company, and want people to use it as easy and comfortable as possible.4 -
I find it odd that I've gone from primarily doing c++ and c# in Unity in the first year to doing blueprints in unreal in the second year. I have nothing too much against blueprints (except for the crappy, broken engine it's a part of but that's for another rant), but blueprints to me seems like the dummies guide book you read before going to the challenging stuff later on when it comes to programing. I just find it a bit backwards they'd introduce that after the challenging stuff.1
-
Is learning Unity (and C# whatever) worth it - consodering i have 3 years + time before my school project show off?
Also interested to make 3D games and VR - is unity any good for that?

Get nice idea to code game.
Done it in 3 hours with unity.

Let's say you're building an application for a very specific android device, and you know exactly what it comes with (OS, architecture, Graphics libraries, RAM, ecc)
I can't really make HUGE changes to my code, but since I'm working with unity, I cant make some changes in the way the APK is built.
So let's say my device is ARCH64, uses OpenGLES3.1 and has 4GB of RAM, what are the improvements in making the APK for 64bits instead of 32?7 -
Having such bad ADD that I have 20 different projects going in 20 different stacks / languages.

I've got to make hololens gallery in Unity as a test for a new job. I've spent half of yesterday trying to make it work. I managed to build the scene, but failed at making it work in emulator. I'm trying to run it using VS2019, but project needs Windows Mobile SDK. I think I've installed everything I could find and could have been installed. I tried removing this manually and launching but obviously it didn't work.
Has anyone played with Hololens?5 -
I have been fighting with text shimmering problem in Unity UI for a VR app. Have tried textmesh pro and tried playing with 'Dynamic pixels per unit' as written in unity forums, but no use😑. The text looks ok when normal size but lowering size causes it to shimmer and unreadable.

Which one do you stand for?
Ubuntu Unity VS Ubuntu Gnome
Let the games begin.
If you use a different OS, go ahead and add it in the comments!7 -
My parents showed me how to play "Spy Hunter" on their Pentium III Windows 98 machine when I was 2, and I started installing games. Fast-forward to elementary school there was a game design afterschool class where we learned to use "Scratch" to drag-n-drop pieces of code used for animating and creating games. I wanted to do "real coding" so I got an internship at a local company, learned HTML, Java, JavaScript, and Python. Now, I'm developing games in Unity engine, and making mods on SourcePawn. The consumer is becoming a creator.

Can someone tell me why this worked
`int percentHealth = (getHealth() * 100) / maxHealth;`
But this didn't work
`int percentHealth = (getHealth() / maxHealth) * 100;`
It stressed me out for +2 hours.8 -
Unity is such a load of shit. Why would you have every single tutorial tell you to instantiate a prefab with the Instantitate() method then have it break your game on build because you haven't loaded each individual asset inline. Isn't the magic of this whole process that the editor take care of that shit? Now the project I was sure would be finished by this morning is going to take me AT LEAST another day.1

This partnership gives Google advertisers access to Unity’s mobile gaming network through Universal App Campaigns (UAC). This means Unity mobile app developers will be able to monetize with Google’s ads without any additional required development work.
To date, the partnership has resulted in video completion rates of 87.3% compared to the average benchmark of 32.5% (Source: Moat Analytics Benchmarks: Q4 2017). Furthermore, Unity has consistently scored 97.8% for valid and viewable rates, well above in-app benchmarks of 54.7%, providing a brand-safe environment for advertisers while also creating value for developers and gamers alike.2 -
THANKS UNITY FOR FUCKING CRASHING ON EVERY STARTUP!!
I have a big problem my Unity Engine Editor crashes on startup with an error never seen in the forum's! GOOD TO HAVE THANKS.... I really needed to work this weekend on my game but noooooo 😑😑😑 if the support can't help me I'm quit Unity and start working with C++ !

So I decided to collab with a website's maker (who i wont name here) to create something like r/place. (not an exact copy.)
I decided to start by learning their API, and customizing the server later.
I asked the guy for some help, and HOLY SHIT.
Let's start off by this: I had to request a chunk. The response data was in binary. 4 bits meant 1 pixel, so right away, I had to deal with that in my code.
No problem, just decided to use C# instead of JS. (see https://www.devrant.io/rants/547013)
I was finally done after a couple of mental breakdowns, and decided to implement updates.
I needed to use webhooks, and that was completely fine. But when I got "C1FFFF0000CA06" as response (in hex), I seeked some help.
C1 is the operation type: it means that a pixel was updated.
FFFF and 0000 were the chunk coordinates. But remeber: it's a signed integer. Guess what, I had to use Two's compliment. I decided to be a lazy asshole and only check for "00000000" because I was only displaying chunk 0,0.
CA06: This is a weird one. It's 2 bytes, and CA0 contains the X and Y coordinate of the pixel (in the chunk), and 6 contains the new color of the pixel.
I was sent the following code to work with 0xCA06:
color = 0xF & buffer
x = buffer >> 10
y = (buffer >> 4) & 0x3F
So I tried to do it, and it didn't work. I'm not blaming the developer of the server (original dev is reddit) because maybe I screwed up, but which guy will have a night of frustration and debugging?
Me.
P.S.: Dev, if you see this, I'm sorry. This API is way too complicated. I know we need to save bandwith and stuff, but damn.1 -
Hi everyone! I'm making a LAN game in unity, and all of it is working well, however deaths aren't syncing. I'm using the ServerChangeScene function, yet however when one player dies, the scene isn't reloaded for both clients. I'm using UNet2

Hello guys. I'm aiming to start learning game development. Some people adviced to go for Unity as it is multiplatform. So what are you thoughts?12 -
After 1 and half years of irritation with Cinnamon, finally got Unity working..😁😁. You realise the importance of something only when you are without them..
-
This moment, you know ur movement mechanic in Unity works just as u want it to be. But its so damn hacky, u are afraid of refactoring, because u know.. u would break it...1
-
So i want to start learning about unity and want to use it in a project for Android.. Can anyone guide me with any helpful resources or suggestions?
TIA..1 -
How I define unity : "A single pixel alone can form only one colour but when many come together they form a colourful image, capable of telling the entire story"
-
So I just installed Ubuntu with a dual boot on my laptop, and after using it for only a few hours. I can safely say that Windows 10 sucks. Can't wait to uninstall it...4

Visual Studio is a fucking shitheap of an IDE and everyone who worked on it should be fucking incinerated.
I've been trying to get Unity to build my game for about a fucking hour and a half now, only to realize that it was a warning from a script that was causing it to fall flat on it's face.
So I deleted the script because it was a shitty script anyways, not much was being lost here, and I started building the game, and lo and behold, it was actually fucking doing something.
I went to go get a drink, only to come back to see that this stupid fucking engine gave me yet ANOTHER error that wasn't even from a script anywhere in my game's files.
It was fucking Visual Studio. It didn't even give me that concise of a fucking error, just "this file doesn't exist" or whatever hypercomplex bullshit it spat out at me.
So, I took to google, and found that I should open the solution file hidden within the uncompleted build, and upon doing so Visual Studio told me it needed to install some more shit in order to do so.
I decided to let it do it's thing, and you wanna know what the real kicker is?
I started writing this rant when it was at 25%.
I had started talking to my friend about how absolutely fucking garbage and slow this IDE is at around the point where it started downloading. It took fifteen fucking minutes for it to get to 25%.
I could uninstall and reinstall both Destiny 2 and Killing Floor 2, twice, in the time takes for this shitty fucking program to install its tumor of an update onto my system.
FUCK Visual Studio.
Fuck the person who conceived the idea of it.
And fuck every single person who supports it.
Every single person that thinks this fucking anathema of an IDE was a good idea should be incinerated.12 -
Hours and hours and coffee and tears went into my last debugging session. I couldn't for the life of me figure why unity interception wasn't creating the proxy objects. I was this close *Grabs an atom* of rolling back everything unity related, when suddenly, out of nowhere, a fuc**ng INTERNAL in the afromentioned class caught my eye...
Anyway, lets keep on coding :D :D -
So I'm I'll right now and my boss needed to upload an app to Apple store.
So the app was made in unity and it already takes like 5m just to build from unity to xcode.
After that. He could not figure out how to upload the stuff bc there was a missing provisioning profile and then the team information was missing and then other tens of stuff.
Now android does not have this problem at all, like why is iOS so complicated? Fuck Apple1 -
First two days in a new job.
It's pretty good. I love the fact that I don't have to work alone. I've got a temporary workstation since we are replacing laptops next month. It's shit and Unity is lagging, but I'll manage.
So yeah, life's good currently. I wonder how long will it take to become shitty again.5 -
What do I need to develop android games, do I need necesarily Android Studio and Unity? I want to develop a game like Bitcoin Billionaire (search it on Play Store if you don't know what game I'm talking about)12

The fucking Unity Transport Layer API documentation is horrible! There's a bunch of information missing, and whenever I try to send data I just get a "NoResources" error. All the docs say about that one is: "No internal resources ro acomplish request.", nothing on forums or google... Worst part is, I've not even started dev that long and Unity has already given me quite some trouble. I hope that's just inexperience, and not Unity being a bitch.2
-
So let's say I kinda came up with a pattern/architecture for Unity scripting which I find really useful and elegant.
It uses some features which are quite new, and I can't find anything similar on Google. So I suspect I might actually have invented something new.
What should I do?6 -
Just made a quick prototype to test Augmented Reality but my phone (Huawei Y7 2018) isnt compatible with ARCore because it doesn't have a gyro so i cant Build and Run RIP3

I made an android game a while back based on mental math, memory and quick reactions. This is the first game I actually finished and published so I would love some feedback from people that actually know what they're doing. Made in Unity with C#.

I guess I'll just die.
Using unity for a commission project:
Have a CCG-like setup, the cards inherit from Scriptable object, need to serialize a card inventory for the sake of persistence.
Attempt 1: XML serialization: get fucked, can't serialize dictionaries (what the hell)
Attempt 2: using data representation of the dictionary contents: get fucked, can't serialize Scriptable objects because they have to be handled by the engine...
Well okay, what if I use a Scriptable object to keep a persistent dictionary?
Attempt 3: Scriptable object with dictionary: get fucked, the dictionary didn't persist
Well now I'm starting to lose it, I've tried so many things, XML, Binary and JSon serialization, Scriptable objects, data representations, I'm really running out of ideas. I can only think of one more option: throw the Card objects into a Resources folder, an build a set of comma delimited strings to serialize. This is stupid.
Fuck Unity. Shit like this is why I'm making my own engine. Every week I find some new peeve, some new way that unity is full of redundancy and poor design, architectural flaws and workflow deficiencies. I don't know how much more of this I can take.2 -
Can anyone recommend any tutorials and assets to use when making movies/animations in unity?
Looking to turn my book series/potential game into a little series if i can get the hang of it.
I already know im going to use cinemachine for my camera system and I'll build my own audio management and trigger systems (Hopefully).
And a side note, does anyone know of anyone who would do some 3D character modeling if i was able to provide some character concept art and have a chat with them? -
We were learning how to code circles to light up in sequence. As it's similar to how code works for Arduino. Cool. Go back to c# in Unity and teach what the code does not just copy.
-
I had to stop work for 30 minutes because unity thought my headset was an HID compliant device and couldn't understand how to treat them...

How can i throw cube my completely different direction on every click while maintaining restruction shown by cyan lines4

Started with a gamemaking club on campus and we are planing using Unity However I don't know C# I have the documentation and Unity's tutorials but was wondering if any of you know an easier way to get the basics3

Can someone please explain me why the fuck the following doesn't work in C#?
Dictionary<string,object> mex=Json.Deserialize(data.ToString())as Dictionary<string,object>;
if(mex.ContainsKey("sessionId") && mex["sessionId"].ToString()!=tkn.GetSessionID())
the previous condition is NEVER true, but the following:
Dictionary<string,object> mex=Json.Deserialize(data.ToString())as Dictionary<string,object>;
if(mex.ContainsKey("sessionId") && mex["sessionId"]!=tkn.GetSessionID())
will actually work as expected.
tkn.GetSessionID() returns a string, of course
and mex["sessionId"] is always an object that contains a string in form of a number, like 152, 552, 6246 and so on and no, it won't ever contain any blank or other character
Fuck this fucking shit from C#8 -
anyone know a good tutorial for unity and its c# api structure? i’m having a hard time wrapping my head around it and i am starting to feel stupid.3

IMHO: VS Code = Gnome (I love it but it's a constant fight)
Sublime = Unity (Not bad and reliable)5 -
I'm fascinated about story games like: Sentece, Who's the killer, I'm innocent etc.
I have a question, how can I build a game like this? How is this game created?
I'm an android developer and I work in Android Studio, is there any solutions to build this kind of games in Android Studio.
If is this possible, how?
If is not what should I use, unity or?5 -
What's the point of having a 'Check for updates' if it doesn't tell you there is a security update? And why do I always have to download and install updates manually?
-
sigh, Oculus unity sdk why do you pain me so with your orientation of hands 90degrees to the controller orientation.
Now I have to manually adjust offsets.
Oculus SDK can go suck one. -
Developing in Unity for Android.
>install UMP Pro for Android, iOS from assets store
>latest version on store: 1.7.3
>documentation in the plugin itself
>wow that's rare!
>open documentation
>"User Manual"
>"Version 2.0.3"
Wtf? is this documentation coming from the future? -
Unity Controller Support:
Why are controllers awful, it seems like I have to custom each different controller manually to the game. Why can't the the A button on one controller be A on all controllers.
Why can't there be a universal built in controller script that would convert all of the different types controller inputs into a generic controller input that can be translated by just one script instead of writing a script for every common controller... 😠3 -
last day of bug fixing, 2 little bugs left, the last modify broke EVERYTHING (never touch an animator class on unity if u don't remember where and how many times u reused it)
-
In Visual Studio 2017, when an error occurs and you hover your cursor over it, you cannot copy the fucking error to do a Google Search. Who was the idiot that didn't think this through?
The ONLY way is to go to the separate Error List in the bottom, and even then I can only copy all or nothing.
Man, fuck Unity for not having a better default IDE already...1 -
Unity VS Xcode for beginner noob iOS game development? Is it better for a new programmer to learn Unity or learn the frameworks Apple offers?1
-
Anyone here ever build something with vuforia and tried to implement a static object in your scene to move around?
So like you start the program and there is a 3D AR object in front of you. That object should not change position when you move.
I have been searching for about 4 hours now and havent made any progress and im just questioning if it is even possible to do, so if any of you understand the problem please add your 2 cents -
Unity is the worst! Every single version of it has some kind of bug that prevents some piece of what I'm working on to be buggy. 5.3.4 seems the most stable, as far as the app working, but likes to crash on me several times a day on Mac OS. I'm really tired of this.
