Hazarth93942dTo be fair, if I were to spend the rest of my life in prison without a chance of parole I'd rather die anyway. Whats the point of life if your entire life is a small concrete box with other male violent criminals.
Arguably death penaly is mercy at that point. Similarly to euthanasia. I'd rather die quickly than be stuck in a hospital for the rest of my short life (if terminally ill that is)
But we should probably change the death penalty to be a) optional and b) be done via massive heroin dose or something, so you OD on something nice (I don't do a lot of drugs so I can't recommend one lol) -
kiki375632d@Hazarth that’s fair, but I think we shouldn’t mercy-kill rapists and torturers willy nilly. If you _really_ rather die than spend the rest of your life in a concrete box where you belong, find a way! I don’t care. You didn’t care about your victims either.
When you see death row inmates, don’t think about them — think about their victims.
I agree, Japanese death row system where inmates are being executed at a moment’s notice, and can spend 10+ years awaiting their execution that can happen at any moment is a bit too much, but solitary confinement is just fine. -

I agree with @Hazarth and disagree with @kiki at the punishment part.
Punishment for the sake of punishment is cruelty. If it doesn’t serve any purpose other than revenge or "it’s what they deserve", it shouldn’t be done. If they want to choose death, they should be granted death.
I guess you could bring up deterrence as a reason for punishment and I would accept it, but I think in reality it‘s not how it works.
I believe that those who commit crimes that are potentially punished by death or lifetime prison won‘t be stopped by the fact that they know about that punishment. So deterrence doesn’t work. -
kiki375632d@Lensflare you'll never know about the crimes that were stopped by those deterrents because they were never committed in the first place.
-
@kiki yes I know. And I tried to be as clear as possible that it‘s what I believe and don’t know for certain.
But yeah, I believe that if it has an effect, it‘s probably one out of hundreds of cases. -
An eye for an eye is perfect when an eye is took intentionally. The only thing wrong is that a judge is human, and a judge will make a mistake.
-
@superdupernova imo, an eye for an eye is a terrible system for crimes. And I'm glad that most civilized countries agree.
This shit belongs in our barbaric past. -

Buttsex, prison wine, gang politics. There's plenty of reason to live even in prison -
hjk10156062dThe kicker of your first point is that the whole process is so time consuming it's (up to 10 times) more expensive than providing food & shelter. So you're not saving anything.

Death penalty is bad, and here’s why:
- It’s decided and implemented by humans. Thus, sooner or later, an innocent person will be executed. It happened before. To me, one innocent life is worth more than all the money the government saves by executing people rather than feeding/maintaining them indefinitely.
- Solitary confinement for life without parole is a way better of a deterrent for soon-to-be death row inmates. I heard that El Chapo began to mutilate his body as a desperate suicide attempt in ADX Florence, and it scared the hell out of me.
- Botched execution is very painful. Government should not inflict physical pain as a punishment on unarmed people, period.
