To answer my own questions:
1. Thingiverse and Shapeways, but when I am missing something I have limited skills to make my own models.
2. Codex404 -
I'm a cnc operator with experience eith CAD and Cam.
Right now I'm using thingiverse for pre-made models and Autodesk Inventor for pieces.
Did my first full project with 6 pieces yesterday, gonna post in Thingiverse soon.
I would just love a social media for 3D stuff... A mix of devrant, Facebook and Thingiverse would be owsome (and possibly could give you money and a job with ads) -
Solidworks :) Sometimes I grab stuff from thingiverse. GrabCAD is just so bloated... But that platform sounds neat. It'd be fun to help!
-
@GyroGearloose If we are creating a platform like I described, in which ways can you guys/girls contribute? Which languages/techniques are you familiar with?
-
@Codex404 as for language, we must stick with ISO gcode lol :D
Prefer Autodesk Inventor over Solidworks (lot more simpler)
Now, to learn how to draw you first need to think in 3D....
When you need custom pieces you have to make , first do a drawing, include some measures...
ex: http://holltech.tripod.com/Images/...
First do the 2D, then think how it needs to be in Z (an easy piece would only needs a Z value, lets say Z = 10mm.
From 2D to 3D, in Inventor or Solidworks you use the Extrude command, wich can create forms from 2D drawings, and also create holes in a already built form.
I had classic classes for 2D and 3D, also my father always worked in the molding company and I learned how to use the basic tools (paquimeter, rules, squares) early, so I don't really know how hard it is to think from 2D to 3D.... -
@Codex404 Oh sorry lol was still thinking CNC....
A webapp would be the best (multiplatform)
Than do an Android (and maybe iPhone later?) app with an ad for extra money.
I don't realy know about backend, so no opinion from me :D (PHP I think it's the easyest to work with) -
@Codex404 @GyroGearloose 😄 I did quite a bit of PHP a while back (built quite a lot with it), but now I'm really into Node (what we use at work). Could potentially do C#, but really Node is my goto.
For frontend we could do an SSR, but I'd prefer SPA. Vue, React, whatever works for you. -
@ScriptCoded First off, PHP and C# are fine with me, as well as Vue and React.
I've most experience with webdev in PHP (Laravel) and Vue. Since we probably want to have an API either way we can do a Laravel backend and an Vue or React backend (I do want to learn React sometime as well).
Secondly:
I had never heard of SSR so I had to DuckDuckGo it. First post I find is some blogpost made by a colleague of mine :D I lolled way to hard :D -
@Codex404 Can you provide a link? Didn't found anything on SSR except motors or cars
-
@Haxk20 @ScriptCoded @GyroGearloose https://gitlab.com/CreatorLand
I've made a group with a (temporary?) name for the project. No repos in there yet though -
geaz2896yI create most of my prints by myself in Fusion 360. If I share a design, I use thingiverse.
https://thingiverse.com/Geaz/about/
Are you missing something specific on thingiverse and other platforms, beside the bad mobile experience? -
@geaz I miss multiple things, first off having to sign in every single time you go to an other device. Im going to the site on 6 devices so signing in becomes a hell.
Secondly most features are good but just not it.
And the customer service is horrible.
I also would like a "print to" button.
As creator I dont believe my models have been downloaded the same amount as they have been viewed. So their statistics are plain wrong.
Im currently working on a make which consists of 5 things. The only way to combine them in a make is by first doing a remix and then use that as make...
Related Rants
I have a few questions for the people having a 3D printer and/or are interested in 3D printing.
1. Where do you retrieve your models from? Or do you make them yourself?
2. What is your thingiverse name (if you have it)
3. Personally I'm missing a single good information source where questions can be asked, models can be shared etc. Thingiverse doesn't have a mobile UI and is pretty limited in my opinion. I'm thinking of creating a "social media" platform where people can share their creations, collection of information sources about 3D printing. Would you like to help or is there a good alternative for Thingiverse that I have not found yet?
