Lets assume you don't know anything about industrial protocols. You are also working for a very high profile and very technically inclined company. Your job is to figure out how to get data over a network interface using a specific standard port. The protocol in use is THE standard for information systems in the industry: opcua.

I am actually shocked at the amount of technical ineptitude of the people we have interfaced with. How did they get in the door?

When I first started out in my industrial controls career I just read whatever manuals and websites I could find. Do people not do that anymore?

People don't do that anymore, no.

They turn to chat gpt, or Gemini, or Claude, or whatever the FOTM is.

If you want to really master software, you need to know your hardware too.

But then again, those referred in this post are the ones to be substituted by AI, because they aren't engineers, they cannot think outside the given instructions, and are just easily replaceable manual labour.

For those of us who can think, mastering a specific standard (given that it's actually followed, which it's not) is easy peasy, because it's logical.

Code monkeys can't do that.

@CoreFusionX the experience I have had with software and electrical engineers is that they just "figure it out" and only ask questions when they have tried a few things. Even our tech support tries to break things first. They are pretty good at asking intelligent questions.

But for me it's frustrating if i ask some webdeveloper like "Do you know the HTTP protocol?" and they're like NOOOOO, that's not for me. And i'm like ooooooohh.... Well, having written webdav servers and whatnot i guarantee a lot of people don't know the protocol. A get with a body is just possible. But considering this information far out of your league is for me just very shocking. That's why they do so weird security things that do not make sense, they don't know what they're securing. They're just doing something that feels good, not knowing. I'm never insecure about security. Rolling a 8 digits password SSH on my server public with no shame. If you get hacked, how big do you thin the change is that it's on a level that they will get access to your termimal / fs? Barely NONE.

It's not that, (even when that is obvious).

So far, bot activity was kept to known accounts and you could trust her account to be her words.

It no longer seems the case, and it's a sad thing, because I consider her a really valuable person (and to this community too), but, even knowing it's probably some harmless experiment, at least for me, it drives away any need to engage.

Star Trek had some subplots about civilizations falling apart because the AI did everything and the humans regressed so far they viewed it as mystical and also pure panic when it started malfunctioning and their whole civilization would fall apart
