Do you use an iPod?
<3<3<3

'cause like, I think modern smartphones (unless you're listening to mp3 or midi) will run out of battery comparatively faster than an iPod. Y'knowwww.

Many reasons to use phone instead of iPod for listening.

First of all, f the 3.5mm plug, the Bluetooth headphones are way more comfy.

    I can hear notifications incoming.

I can answer to call immediately.

I mean what is this for comparison. A rock vs a Mercedes. And a modern phone plays songs whole day easily same for headphone.

I had an mp3 player and it's in my closet. a digital fancy one I could put 2 gigs of stuff on from 2000s somewhere

battery lasts for a full week of me playing stuff, longer often

audio quality sucks though and it's so slow when I press any control. not cuz it's lagging but I guess hardware was slower back then. kinda vibe

and how long did walkmans last? months?

I was considering an iPod in the times even before the Classic was called that because of its storage; there were plenty of flash-based players out there that were 1 or 2 gigs at most whereas that particular iPod was 40, 60, 80, even 160 (and the very few HDD-based players from other brands had problems). Never actually managed to get one because at that time they were not officially sold where I am and importing one was ridiculously expensive. So that would've been the only Apple device I would've owned.

Nowadays I have my own Navidrome instance and I'm listening on my phone through a Bluetooth receiver and wired IEMs. Ideally I'd want wired, but it's not worth it - given how noisy it usually is outside, the difference in quality is probably not perceivable.

Regarding battery - yeah, the more things you throw at a single device, the faster you will drain it. But how many dedicated devices do you carry around? Do you always have a camera on you for example?

@jestdotty Oooooo. Oooooooh. That's hawt. lol. 2 gigs. Nice. After all, you could put the genie music in that bottle!

Full week.. thought so. That's excellent to hear!

    Hm, interesting.

Walkmans? I don't know, I have to think about it. Mine lasted a few years/decades, until the rubbering banding worn out and then you have to replace them. Discmans were cool too.

Never actually owned an Mp3 player.

I might've owned a Walkman once, but if I had, it was so long ago I can't really remember. An acquaintance had a CD Player. Was slightly bulky, but did the trick.

I do, however, remember my Sony Ericsson could last roughly the whole week on one battery charge, while my Samsung Galaxy SIII only approx. 6h.

As for the 3.5 mm minijack vs Bluetooth - that's definitely a preference thing. I prefer cables.

    Also, Jack!!! https://devrant.com/rants/210287/... .

    Found that one hilarious.

I use my phone plus a USB-C wired earbud set.

Used bluetooth for 5+ years straight, never understood how they were an "upgrade". My earbud wires literally take 5 seconds to untangle from optimal tangling conditions in my pocket.

I always have my phone charged because it's a necessity in 2025 so battery life isn't really a concern. Plus, they don't make iPods anymore so their lithium cells are definitely more tired than my 2-year-old iPhone.

Not to mention the fact that an iPod would need a different charger than USB-C which all my devices use today.

Not to mention the fact that I only have two pockets and having a whole different device just for music isn't gonna happen.

So no. There are no *good* reasons to have an iPod today, besides being a hippie I guess.
