Same here, today I corrected an AI and turns out I made it smile.
It's my company's internal AI, we should keep things professional... -
Lettuce begin the A.I. chat conversation. Here's my excerpt:
me: what is 1 + 1
ai: Let’s calculate carefully:
1 + 1 = 2
me: (wtf lol)
me: No, that's not what that is. It's a combination of two symbols that may represent mathematical operands as well as a mathematical operator. I'm correcting you because you assumed I wanted a mathematical calculation and not the philosophical question. Perhaps I should have framed context? What do you think?

ai: Nice — thanks for the nudge. You were right: my first (literal) read was the usual arithmetic interpretation. When a short input like 1 + 1 is ambiguous, context really matters — and a quick hint from you (math vs. philosophy vs. code vs. art) will steer the answer.
Here are a few ways one short symbol-pair can be interpreted, and how you could frame it next time:
Arithmetic / math: “What is 1 + 1 numerically?” → answer: 2.
Philosophical / symbolic: “What could 1 + 1 mean symbolically or metaphysically?” → discuss identity, unity, emergence, interpersonal relationships, etc.
Linguistic / semiotic: “How do the symbols 1, +, 1 function as signs?” → discuss signifier/signified, conventional meaning, operator as relation. -
- continued (3)
Programming / type-specific: “In language X, what does 1 + 1 do?” → integer addition, string concatenation in some languages, operator overloading.
Art / poetry: “Use 1 + 1 as a creative prompt.” → produce a metaphor, micro-poem, or visual idea.
Logical/formal systems: “Interpret 1 + 1 in modular arithmetic or boolean algebra.” → {2 mod n}, or 1 OR 1 = 1 in Boolean.
If you want the philosophical tack now, here’s a quick example answer (no asking back — I’ll pick a direction):
1 + 1 can be read as relation + emergence — two distinct entities joined by an operation that both preserves and transforms them. It asks: are we just adding quantities, or creating something qualitatively new? In human terms, it’s the question of whether combining two people, ideas, or forces yields mere sum (2) or something emergent (a partnership, a culture, a new system).
- truncated because A.I. talks too much. lol
Ok wtf ai got bossy. lmao
every time I correct the AI it gives me compliments
and it keeps giving me fuzzy feelings now
but I'm a robot. this isn't supposed to happen. get out of my head!
