Why Evil Corp did not have its servers on a cloud provider?

(This question is about any big corporation with a whole bunch of servers. I quoted Evil Corp because the question came thinking about it.)

Because they are their own cloud provider

Because not everything is built for the cloud.

@math-silva For facebook, google, [insert big company here]? Yeah it's worth it for them. For smaller companies like startu- wait, what do you think ~the cloud~ is?

Disclaimer: i don't have years of experience as a sysadmin, still a student, but here is my take on why.

With the amount of power that evil Corp has, in terms of consumer tech and their influence in global finances, I think it stands to reason, that they've existed for many many years.

While cloud computing isn't really a new thing, it's only really matured to the use of big businesses in the last (relatively) few years. That means that ECorp has been using their own data centers for many decades even by now.

Just think about the amount of work it would take, to move all that they have, to a cloud provider? From what I've gathered, it just wouldn't make sense.

But we can also apply a real world example. Right now there are a couple of companies looking to build their own datacenters here in Denmark where I live. The two I can remember are Facebook and Google.

I'd argue that ECorp is much bigger than both of those companies. So if they are building their own datacenters, well then why would a company like ECorp.

And now this is just something I'm pulling out of my ass, but I think you're a company of that size, it's actually cheaper to have your own datacenter, than to rely on cloud hosting.

Now anyone please do correct me if I'm wrong in any of this

Evil Corp was based on Google, you can see as the mail is just reskinned gmail and so on...it is just a bigger Google, so they can do whatever they fucking want. Their own cloud is one of those things.

@lamka02sk sorry to disappoint you, but ecorp was based on the company Enron (try looking at their logo). Enron was an American energy company, involved in a huge scandal, making them an obvious choice for evil Corp

Sometimes it’s a requirement of customer contractual agreements, often for very sensitive (but not necessarily regulated) data.

@KasperNS Netflix actually did move from their own data centres to AWS because the cost of management was so high for the. Just sayin that company of size Netflix doesn't even want a data centre because it's too much to manage.

I'd say EvilCorp was a cloud provider by itself. Cloud servers are still too be managed and run as real servers.

@math-silva In company I work at it was much more expensive to go with cloud. We actually put our servers to use, so maintenance cost ain't that big in comparison.

@arraysstartat1 what services do you plan to move to the cloud?

@py2js Netflix needs really high throughput everywhere around the world, so they either build several data centres or just go with cloud. Ecorp seemed to be an American company, so they don’t really need fast connections outside the country.
