Had a fight yesterday with my brother about which is worse Windows or Linux. Couldn't win because he's ignorant about the advantages of Linux. Still waiting for the day to come when he gets screwed and has to use Linux! (Gif for visual representation!)

    Worse in what context?
And you weren't ignorant when you were pointed linux drawbacks?

Let him use what works for him. Educate, don't force.

@netikras Was filling out my taxes on Linux and the entry from last year was missing to base this years tax on. And my brother blamed it on Linux. I got mad because this could have happend easily on Windows too as its the softwares fault, not the OS's.
And yes I am somewhat biased towards Linux because it works a lot better for my workflow than windows does. I should have written the rant more like this. (Generic excuse why I didn't!) Soz bout that.

With things like this a superiority complex is the only thing to cause a frown, not a preferred OS. Let people use what they want to use.

    Funny gif, btw!

@FrodoSwaggins not aware of any? :) why so ignorant? :)

@FrodoSwaggins Just watch the Linux Sucks 2017/18 of Bryan Lunduke for some issues.

@FrodoSwaggins not everyone is a super cool dev like you, some people use windows-only software as their jobs you know.

Also both are shit and every os sucks ass except templeos, change my mind

@irene I know! Its just that he doesnt want to go the extra mile to get familiar with anything else but Windows. Which frustrates me, because you cant argue about anything, without knowing both sides. Ive tried to do the things I'm using Linux for on Windows and got a lot more issues than I wanted. (And the other way around!) Yes, they both have their respective use cases!

Some folks need to grow up. An OS is a tool, no more, no less. Each one has its good points, and each one has bad points.

@ganjaman Hey, zwei Grammatikfehler in einem Dreiwortsatz! (Ups grammar Nazi spotted.)

Upvoted because of the gif 😹

One question. Why do you all care? 99% of your dev life is spent in some text editor/ide which works the same on every os. Focus on the job not on the tools. And stop preaching. Its getting old and acting like linux is a cult wont help it.

Sure in some scenarios you need a specific os (for my studio for example I need windows and macos since clients deliver their projects in a multitude of formats which I cant work with on linux) but most of the times it doesnt fucking matter

@ganjaman templeOS best OS. God says ;p

Discuss about what OS is better is like discuss about what vehicle is better. Sure, a bike sucks if it's raining but they are good if you don't have too much space. They pay less for patent, secure, etc. Both will let you do the job, in some cases you will prefer a bike, some cases a car.

Well, I use Linux, windows and MAC OS (Hackintosh).

    Each system has its purpose.

Linux is the cross-compiler toolkit and for self education. Writing drivers for own hardware, experimenting with kernels, etc. Started using Linux back in 2007, until I discovered hackintoshing.

MacOS is my workhorse. Office, development, lightroom.

Windows is the gaming system. I must admit, that I hate developing in windows environment. Some say PEBCAK, and I agree. It is not made for my requirements.

Each system has its purposes and shoving down the system preference is like shoving down political or religious opinions.

@FrodoSwaggins you said it has no advantages. The paycheck of said people counts as an advantage in my opinion.

What is the context? Why he likes Windows? Is he using Windows because of Photoshop? We need to know the other side of the story 😉

If/when Linux ever catches up to windows for gaming I'll switch, till then, windows will have to do the trick.

(And by catches up I mean: all games released for Windows can be played on Linux without any annoying hacky fixes AND performance is the same or better while offering the same visuals. High refresh rate gaming with consistent frametimes are really important to me.)

@Nanos virtual machines usually don't have the whole bios/UEFI side of things aside from a few tweekable values, so chances are that it wouldn't work well as a way to learn how to dual boot.

Oh back on the topic of the original post, why is it "every" version of Linux(all the distros I've tried) have input lag, or at least it feels like they do. I'm not sure if it's the GUI renderer that's at fault or if the input events are not being used raw from the hardware and instead are going into some queue or w/e but every time I use Linux input always feels a bit jello. I really hate it. ( I've tried on all sorts of hardware as well from medium to really high end, always same problem )

@Null0x90 I kinda expected this to show up in the comments...

@hexc it is like Windows is for non technical people and entertainment purposes while Linux is for technical people, more work related type of OS

@Devnergy as a programmer, I personally still prefer the low input latency/responsiveness of Windows. Even when I'm not gaming, a "slow" UI bugs the shit out of me.

@irene Ubuntu and Elementary OS were the last 2 I tried around a year ago, both had the default GUI, both laggy feeling no matter how powerful the desktop :/

@hexc Like the saying - choose your own poison. If you're happy and productive with Windows so be it. If in Linux or Mac, so be it too. Life is short so be happy. All OS is not perfect :)
