So, Europe lost today...
Now we just have to hope, that companies will apply these laws only in countries where they should, otherwise a really dark times for internet are coming.

    The article 13?

Surely this is a good thing for content creators, artists, musicians, photographers, writers why is this such a bad thing? I can see it being a major pain in the arse and impossible to implement for many social platforms though, but that reason is not a valid one.

    @devTea Exactly.

@lamka02sk The Eu member states will apply it for all companies offering service targeting the EU. Platforms world wide which targeting the EU will be affected.
Of course they can allow uploads for the rest of the world, but just block it in the EU (which would be enough for the EU).

Unfortunately through their upload preventing / licencing algorithms the platforms will now know if something uploaded is (probably) illegitimate, thus they are vulnerable against sues for leaving illegal content online.

@helloworld How reliable will those systems be? As those filters have be low cost and have a low false negative rate, the false negative might be high. Especially in the field of remixes or parodies, this filters have problems (what qualifies as a legitimate parody or is illegal is even hard for humans).

Can all (!) platforms effort better systems?

One non rhetorical question: How is "impossible" (not just hard) not a valid argument?

@sbiewald The argument is wether the ruling is correct in terms of protecting copyright, you either agree or disagree with that. How you implement the ruling is a different question and has no baring on wether the ruling is correct or not.

@helloworld Many content creators were opposed to it. In the first place, this is all about publishing companies and so on, but not about teh content creators themselves.

@helloworld But that's not the matter this time.

This act is different. When there are copyright changes, they usually are more about whenever something (like parody, remix) is allowed or not.

This time, the reform requires platform operators to act preemptively.
In term of copyright protections only (!!!), it does it job. "Unfortunately" the world is not copyright protection only and laws must be possible to implement, especially if a law - as said before - forces platforms to action, indirectly leading to restriction of parody and whatsoever.

It must be possible to follow laws.

    ---

The rest if the reform is (mostly - excluding articles 15, 16, 17 / formerly 11-13) good: Teachers and science are not strictly bound to copyright anymore and if a work is not sold anymore, the author might retract an exclusive permission and let another publisher print his book.

Restricting freedom is never the answer.
Regulation is rarely a good answer.
Shifting responsibility away from individuals is never the answer.

All of this article 11/13/17/etc. crap is insane and completely destructive.
