Honestly if I'm not sure the first thing I reach for is usually Num Lock or caps lock. The LED on my keyboard changing or not will quickly tell me one of two things: my mouse is fucked or my computer is fucked. Alt tab might also tell me if the app is fucked.

I silently choke it to death by pressing the power button. JK usually try to bring up the task manager to see what's happening
