An online community I've been part of for years has seen a lot of popularity/hate overnight due to a new policy. The influx of new people who want nothing to do with us but just drop by to troll and be cunts is impressive. Also, a significant amount of bots. I want my online home back :( I'm for the new policy and very much against these new clowns who don't really have any reason to be on our page. Before anyone yells gatekeeping, it's a site about knitting and crochet. Why would you go there if you don't know either craft and have no desire to learn or talk about those? So disappointed. I hope it brought new crafters in and that the trolls will go away soon. It's been such a nice place for so long with barely any idiots because it was reasonably small.. And now look at this mess. I logged in to 20 friend requests from people I don't know and am almost certain aren't real people.

Why is it so hard for humans to accept that some people may disagree with them and that's okay?

For the bots, you have to know that because current google captcha and other bot detectors use a large variety of traffic data about users to determine if they are humans automatically, there is a current trend from bot to connect and like almost anything. They see and click advertising and popular event to mimic human behavior. This alone do not generate money but the bot that pass bot detection can then be use to generate fake like, vues and other stuff that can be sold.

@Kasonnara oh yeah I know. It's totally because the page has generated a lot of debate that they've come. I'm just sad it happened. I thought it was the one safe place. And the mods are swinging the banhammer hard. I donated money to the site to buy them a drink for all the cleanup they'll have to do now lol.

There is something called the dark forest theorem regarding space civilisations, its says that the universe is filled with other civilisations but they all try to be quit as possible cause otherwise some aliens come and obliterate you.

And then there is the dark forest theorem for online communities. All the forums, niche sites and message board didnt ceased to exists but became invite online and password protected cause otherwise the troll aliens come and burn your society from the orbit. Which is exactly what you are just observing. Carpet Bombing cause you were a blimp on someones radar.

It doesnt help you, but your community is lost already i fear. Once discovered only a permament fight can keep the status quo.

@BurnoutDV RIP my online home I guess :( we shall retreat to our discord server and never interact with outsiders again.

May I ask how that community is/was called?

@Wack I deliberately left the name out because I don't trust people on here not to troll for fun. If you did some digging it'd probably be reasonably easy to find an online community for fiber arts that recently adopted a controversial site policy..

Not a person so this place doesn't need protecting. If it was a no politics rule such as here on devrant it would make sense but this is just a rule for one side. "Supporting trump is white supremacy". My ass. Also the first person that got banned showed the email he received and he was banned for saying he "found trump admirable in some aspects"

@fuck2code to each their own, I disagree with you.

@Frederick it's because they don't see it as a discussion of politics but rather of humanity and decency. It's not a ban on a political party but on a person. There's been talk for a long long time and a lot of drama and uproar in the community so in a sense this is just the aftermath of the bombs dropping.

lol what - an arts and crafts website needs to ban trump discussions?

@JoshBent yeah. The middle aged white women got proper rowdy 😂

@Elyz wild west, just with knitting accessories and yarn haha, had a proper laugh over something so remote.

@JoshBent accurate 🤷‍♀️ I stayed out of it for the most part but I imagine a lot of those ladies either have nothing interesting in their lives to care about so they seek the thrill they can get from arguing with internet strangers. Some got strangely defensive of the president and didn't allow others to come with any criticism, shit was odd.

@Elyz impressive how some hobby so calm can attract politic discussions, it would seem they are the last to give a shit and as far from it as possible.
  • 1
@JoshBent oh no no. It's a whole thing now with not just sticking to the knitting but actually having the difficult discussions. Mostly, I think, because it surfaced that the community as a whole is pretty fucking racist and biased towards 30-something skinny white women. We've had debates about diversity and inclusivity all year so obviously we got trump mixed up in it.

@Elyz meanwhile jennet is just trying to ask what yarn is easiest to knit and what kind of projects nancy has been wrapping on lol

imho rude to pollute such pure hobby with outside matters that are so subjective and toxic, either way, shouldn't be just banning trump, since as you see that gets you all the wrong attention, but ban all politics instead

Regarding bots, implement minimum amount of moderator approved posts until you can post yourself etc. there's a handful of solutions to extinguish the 12 year olds
