as for the _why_ - I don't like clicking links if I do not see any hints what's in there. The hint would help to figure out what to look at/for after the redirect. Otherwise I'll spend 1-5 minutes just trying to figure out _why_ I was suggested to click it.
If the link is only meant for the shits and giggles - that's 5 minutes completely wasted. If it's meant to inform with some useful info - too bad then. But more often than not it's the giggles case, that's why I prefer not to click on links unless there is some additional info about the site contents/the intent next to the link.
