being a first year IT student:

- help, I can't check-in to my flight
- my computer is slow, I heard you can fix it (still runs xp)
- can you fix the printer?

- my laptop is broken (error message pops up with the actual solution) and there was an error
- did you read it?
- did I read what?

Is this gonna get better anytime soon?

Yes, the stupid or misplaced ones always drop out in the first semester. Second wave dropouts happen halfway through when the existential crisis starts.

@frickerg we started as 35, and there are only 9 left for second year. there's not a lot of space for a second dropout wave lol

First year all the ones who either can't Google or don't want to program leave, second year those that don't know if programming is what they want quit or people who can't keep up.

Third year is the place to get stuck and only a few fortunate make it out in one piece without having to do resits

Fourth year is the final test

First year I even attempted to teach those people. But those were looking just on their phone while I specifically came to school to help them. I was like, fuck you guys I'm going home! Only did it with people afterwards who genuinely were trying to grasp the subject

Hint: Don't help them.

Same here. First year: 200 students. Now, in the final year: 20 students. The biggest wave of dropping out is after the first year. They usually drop out, start a new one, and a year later drop out again... 😁 But at least you don't have to spend too much time with those people.

nope, from my experience: free support for family/friends for eternity ... the curse of our profession.
I'm slowly approaching the end of my degree and, as most have already said, I've seen people go, too.
I need to repeat an exam at the end of my next semester and it's the hardest one to succeed (for me). Hope my 3-4 years of studying don't go to shit because of this mandatory exam.🙄

My class was more extreme. One of the girls in first year decided dropping out, getting married and having a baby at age 20 with a rich guy made more sense than introduction to programming.
