As C++ and C can be used very insecurely, maybe you can focus on vulnerabilities in that area?
String format vulnerabilities, buffer overflows, use after free vulnerabilities can be understood easier if you already know the language.
Alternatively - or additionally later - you look into network programming and/or operating system internals. -
