One day a client sent me gifts and a sweet letter just because they loved their new website so much. I just about cried. I work in an industry where acknowledgment and thankfulness by clients are extremely rare. 😱😭8
-
LOL this was actually a true story, it seems she had to delete her twitter account and make a new one! 😂😂😂8
-
Just read this in LinkedIn:
XYZ is one of our top star developers, with #speed as maybe her strongest super skill. She develops and ships new features at a rapid pace, at any time of the day (and night)…
This sounds super toxic for some reason. I’m triggered11 -
New office.
They gave me a fucking Mac. It's a fucking nightmare to operate this machine efficiently and effectively.
Piece of shit. I had given a preference of Windows and yet they shoved this PoS in my face.
What a cognitive load to deal with on constant basis.57 -

Manager: I just created a new ticket! The website flashes when you reload it!
Dev: Yes, that's typically what happens when you reload a website.
Manager: ...
Dev: ...5 -
Recruiter Email: We need experience in Doker!
Dev: I could potentially be interested, what is this new technology? I've never heard of Doker!
Recruiter: It's not super new, it's the traditional Doker! You know, good ol' Doker!
Dev: Like Poker? Or Joker? 🤡
Recruiter: What?
Dev: What?10 -
Manager: We will be building a new app. THIS TIME EVERYTHING MUST BE ABSOLUTELY PERFECT, ANYTHING LESS THAN TOP QUALITY WORK WILL BE REJECTED!!
*Not even 2 days into the new project*
Manager: Ok that’s good enough, we can fix it later. Can you go quicker on the next feature? Just sacrifice a bit of quality so we get these tickets closed as fast as possible. I said we can fix it later. Getting tickets closed asap is top priority.
Dev: …3 -
I did just quit my job.
It was my first job ever.
The only job I've ever had.
But I kinda couldn't take it anymore, the pay was a bit too low and the projects were really demanding.
On Monday, I'll sign my new contract in another company, I'm REALLY looking forward to it and barely can wait!
I'll be working with just one tech-stack which is awesome compared to now where I have to work on like 5 different stacks, sometimes in a single day.
I can't wait for the new job to kick in.11 -
Today I quit my job lol.
In my two previous stories I told you guys about a job offering I got, and after a few more incidents in my old job, I decided I take it.
No, this is not an april fools joke, though it felt quite bad to tell my team lead that I quit on april fools day.
Due to notice period I'll begin my new work at first of july this year, can't wait <34 -
PO: we want this new functionality, a new api call is needed in checkout process
Devs: okay, and what should happen in case of error?
PO: dont worry, it wont fail. Never.

Well, well, well, my new year's gift:
Someone is jamming thousands of requests per second, and NO firewall. JWT tokens that expires in 3 HOURS.
Now MORE THAN 40K stolen.
But, where did it come from? https://devrant.com/rants/4961285/...16 -
Got this rude ass email from an idiot client who thinks I'm solely responsible for figuring out how to link his 3rd party email/newsletter sign up form to his new website without any access to the account. He "doesn't have the time to research". Newsflash asshat, I'm not responsible for your 3rd party shit. Go contact their support. 🙄😑14
-
New client: can we go live next month?
Me: do you think you are our only client, or do you want to pay an extra priority fee?
New client: what?
Me: what?

Writing style of a sane human vs. my new boss
A sane human:
Statement 1 in simple English.
Statement 2 in simple English.
1. Point A
2. Point B
3. Point C
Statement 3 in simple English.
My new boss:
Statement 1 loaded with jargons. Statement 2 more complex, 1) point a, 2) point b, 3) point c. Statement 3 in Latin, Sanskrit, and Unicode.
Everyone his proposing him simpler approaches and tools to use and he is arguing with everyone that his methods are best without any reasonable points.4 -
I visited my friend at his new house. He told me to make myself at home. So I threw him out. I hate having visitors.

Yours truly might make the money by new year to buy themself a new laptop.
And only then the projects that were left to die, will finally see the light!
Fingers crossed tho! 🤞9 -
Ok, YOU fuck up THREE (!) times, and send me new text for the app, each time saying its '100% finished, no errors' and expect me (each iteration) to do it IMMEDIATELY
Why don't you go fuck yourself, do your damn job, do it right, and THEN contact me instead of running around like an childish preschooler with a pair of scissors4 -

Several hours ago decided to quit my job due to insane manager (more in the upcoming rants) without a new job lined up.
An hour ago I got an interview invite from Uber.
WHAT IS HAPPENING
P.S. Anyone working at Uber? Did you have to do much LeetCode? I’ve done two LC exercises in my entire life. Not sure what to expect.10 -
Forgot to secure my mongo db instance, found half the data gone, and a new db holding me at ransom , learn_how_to_recover_your_data , good thing offline backups are a thing.

Hello there! I’m back from the /dev/null to rant about how my teacher marked the “the new C# syntax” as a mistake.
I’m really sorry, but this “new feature” is a thing since 2015 - back then, iPhone 6s got released, Barack Obama was still the US president and the only Corona people cared about was the beer.8 -
2 weeks into my new company and this old dev wants me as tutor already.
Feeling blessed yet stressed.1 -
I just joined a new organization and saw a single file with 9433 lines of code. Advance RIP to me.9

"we gonna build a new application to replace our legacy one"

"we gonna make you put more shit in the legacy app whenever we want and still keep asking about the new app you don't have the time to make"2 -
Modern programming is like racing against the Universe: programmers try to make code for every idiot, the Universe breeds new kinds of idiots. So far, the Universe is winning outright.🧬4

De-duping drama continues. Background: stakeholder marked a bunch of records as “do not use” and didn’t realize/didn’t care about the impact on other systems. Many of those are active user accounts.
Stakeholder: What if we ask the user to create a new website account?
Me: they can’t register a new account of the email was used already. Are you expecting me to delete all those web accounts so the users can start over with their current email? Or are you saying you’re going to email 400 people and tell them to get a new email address and create a new account? Don’t force users to do extra steps to fix your mess.

Ok I'm seriously getting sick of this shit, my new manager wants us to have the fucking 12 hour night shifts from the office for .....no reason??!! for her own fucking entertainment I suppose!
I knew the day would come where my happy times at the new job would be over, my target now is stay 3 more months so I've been there for at least a year then see what happens. fuck me.4 -
New opportunity coming to the people who try. Got this opportunity, i better not suck at it. Give it regular time everyday to earn atleast some title before my degree.9

Super trivial but who ships a laptop to a new employee with random software on that is clearly for their own preferences? I don't use classic shell, I don't like classic shell, and it hugely fucked with both my opinion of the new place (an IT company, ffs) and my estimation of the person who configured it. Do whatever shit you must on your own machine but get out of my way and let me use the fucking os without more pointless shit! I wouldn't do this to you, no matter how much I might love some obscure additional layer for primarily nostalgic reasons. Raging!7

3 weeks into a new job I learned that my predecessor (who resigned and was out the door two days after I started) didn’t know how to secure s3 buckets when all of our production image assets got replaced with elder porn.
Jury’s still out if it was actually him the whole time.1 -
Why is it that when a job ad a recruiter sends has a salary range and they then ask your current salary and expected salary, they're shocked when you want a substantial increase in salary when it's still within the range they posted for the role. Sure it's more than 20% of my current job but if the new job can pay more than that and they say they can why should I lowball? Why does my current salary matter for the new jobs salary?22

Seriously, a new guy joined out team and suddenly I'm out of my comfort zone and started following the pattern I used to follow. The thing he did, commented on my PR, a lot of comments.
I had this thing that hey now I can control anything right, new guy? less experienced? yes, so I don't need to be intimidated. But I realised today that I'm easily intimidated my intelligent people because I think now I am the inferior one.
I will push myself to think about it in a better way, by looking at it positively, to learn something from it.10 -
I have a sandbox account for a product we are developing and I'm receiving promotional emails.

!rant Taking the kittens (they’re like 5-6 years old at this point but they’re always going to be kittens to me) to our old vet (45 minute drive from where we currently live) in a couple hours when they don’t like car rides or the vet and when we know they need to get vaccine shots and we’re not allowed to go inside with them. It’s the first time we’ve ever taken them to the vet and not been able to be there with them. 😭 I’m so nervous/anxious/scared for the little guys.
Wish me luck, friends.4 -
There are indie devs which still builds games for the NES or the first GameBoy... and then we have Apple which goes to extra lenghts to ensure which nobody can develop, publish or install new apps on devices which are too old for the newer iOS versions.4

I want to learn something new and programing related. But got no idea what. Make suggestions, if you wish.24

this is mostly how i feel today. we're all aware not much actually changes, but y'know, we survived this year, we get to celebrate a new cycle and hope for new and better things4

The technician from my previous ISP was creating a mess. The cables were worn out and overall the service quality started degrading. Maybe I too had an old router.
After 10 years of loyalty, decided to switch the ISP. Similar plan, better rates. However, this one is fibre optic.
Expecting better service and less bandwidth drop. We just got the installation done and now will get the connection activated next week.
The ISP has also agreed to provide me a free 5G router, so yayayay!!5 -
I have a power nap after lunch. No matter what. Waking up from a nap is like getting a new extra day for free. And this time whatever was bad before the nap just doesn't seem so bad anymore.7

So, my wife got this new PR job where she sometimes gets called in the middle of the fucking night because some jackoff in Singapore said or did some shit.
Since "husbands that work deep into the night get cheated on by their wives", and I believe in equal gender rights, I thought it would be a good opportunity to watch the new episode of the series we watch together. By my fucking self.
Is that how it feels to cheat on someone?1 -
Everyone in the gaming internet talking about how Microsoft's Activision Blizzard purchase will usher in a new age of improvements have never had to use teams.19
-
This would be my first official post.
Been a IT Technician for a managed service provider for the past 9 years up until last year August. Managing director pulls me in with a movement to App Development after coming across some personal hobby projects I have done in the past.
Started in the new position in November as Junior Developer and workloads get dumped on me and left to figure it out. 4 weeks of running through code without documentation and the solutions started to make sense.
Started a new solution for a Large remote customer with documentation and timelines in December and I get pulled in again for a second time in front of the MD.
Good News:With effect in January I have been promoted to Head of Application development.
Bad News: The existing department head is leaving end of the month and I am to go 900km from home to hand over all responsibilities for the next 3 weeks.
Better News: Department has started shifting to DevOps and it is up to me to set the policies and work flows to how I see fit.
Worse news: it starts by expanding the team asap as 10 projects accounting to 4000 man hours with deadlines in Q3.
Wish me luck. It's going to be twisted Rollercoaster ride...4 -
Next year I will strive to achieve the best test coverage on all our components and design all our new features using best-practice agile methodology with a realtime user involvement.
Reverend on 7 January: Fuck that, we need to ship this shit to production now. -
Absolutely new to programming world and devrent. And looking for some advice on were to begin for a Web developer16

Can anyone release a new video card for PCs _without_ talking about how much faster it is at mining cryptocurrency?6 -
Hello everyone, I've returned and hopefully start ranting again.
I took a long needed break to think about a lot of shit and I'm back with a much healthier mindset and plan for myself.
Aside from the world going to hell what's new?5 -
Positive story ahead.
Had to try and make a new system on my own in a company with no tech staff. I was scared shitless of the responsibility. About a year later we got 2 new devs and people are somehow paying for our very flawed and incomplete mvp.
It's fulfilling and fun. Taking something from zero and suddenly having an actual application with customers.
The other 2 engineers are fun and we talk shit while coding and teaching each other. We also study new tech every day to keep getting better.
I'm even getting some stocks soon.
Long road ahead but honestly, life's good. -
New AltRant build!

Getting in a meeting with 6 people about a new couple of features I have to develop. Nobody can give a clear explanation. Everybody leaves more confused than before.
Every "Does anyone have a question?" just fueled the confusion to the point where nobody wanted to answer that question honestly anymore1 -
Inspired from Jase's face reveal, doing it again for me new friends.
Image in comments (so I can remove it later for privacy reasons).5 -
Started a new job last week. Pays a tad below average for position, but i get training time and budget for anything i want.
So far i have had few days of company introduction, and now a week for training courses related to position.
I have not seen any code yet, brought no value in, just joined.
Massive green flag to me. -
Linux tip: if you're setting up a new computer w/ a fresh install of Linux or you got some new device you'd like to make Linux friends with, don't start by searching for drivers. Start with upgrading your kernel to the newest Mainline version you can. It's very likely it will bring your devices' support with it.
Damn I didn't think I'll like my P1 gen4 THIS much. Even better with a flavour of LMint!14 -
I was just going to sign up for a new ISP when they asked for my email. But they managed to screw up the email form validation by only allowing domains with the tld comprising of two or three characters! My email address ends with “.blog” so had to use my university email 😠
Please follow the RFC6 -
2year project got cancelled, not because of covid, not because of budget reason, but because a new politician got elected that is against our company industry.7

There was a time when backend engineers used to make fun of frontenders and tell them 'you arent a real software engineer', nowadays frontend is getting so complex and cool that even backenders are now starting to learn frontend. I am so happy that because of new tech and frameworks frontend has gained such a massive respect.26

C++ is a spiritual language.
I am getting the feeling of being a saint,
my mind seems to be in a whole new dimension,
My soul seemed to be out of my body for a few minutes,
and I can feel a sparkling elixir flowing throughout my body.
All these, after I grasp concepts such as functors, operator overloading, and container adaptors in C++3 -
I started a new job about a week ago in an R&D software house which is a completely different world from what I am used to.
I worked as a coder in small teams, sometimes with Agile but always sunk in multiple projects at once - requiring constant switching of sprint goals week to week.
Now, I am alone (first person in a "maybe-in-the-future" team), doing research and preparing a demo for the client. It's hella lot of responsibility yet I found it weirdly liberating - being on my own, in control of what I do.
It may change in the future when project will inevitebly grow, but for right now, a week in, I started smiling while coding and learning, which I apparently haven't done in years.2 -
I finally did it! I met my goal! After 6 months and a ton of interviews I finally found a new job! Good pay, good culture and actual options for career paths!
I was so sick of working were I wasn't growing or being valued. I can rant enough about what a weight off my mind this is!
Ref: https://devrant.com/rants/4792256/...4 -
Got blames for 2 hours because our product went down.
Because the provider of license managment went down.
Well, now I put in place a "fuck you" work around. If licensing provider is down, people can still connect and use product (But not create new accounts).
So silly. -
Started a new job as a senior dev but with a framework I've never worked with and I just feel like I'm slow AF and just not qualified for the job. I'm sure it doesn't help that I'm greiving my dog that passed last Tuesday.6
-
Any senior types out there find that you’re losing your coding “chops”? I’m involved in so many OS/Middleware upgrades, infrastructure upgrades, status meetings that I can’t code to save my life anymore. I can review and guide design, but I struggle to generate new code. I can get a new dev going really quickly though - is this just a natural progression or is it game over for me? I feel like if I had to get another job, I’d be very unsuccessful. They call me a leader, but I think I’m just a slave.7
-
I'm pretty sure I've said this before but I'm attempting to transition parts of my Patchwork OS to a new one that supports GNU GRUB / Multiboot.
I think I am finally going insane.5 -
There's one thing I hate about the new year. Everyone assumes it's the best time to do some cleanup, some maintenance. As the year starts fresh - everyone should start fresh, right?
NOT!
No, Hetzner, you don't need to restart my servers on Dec 26th.
No, local VPS providers, you don't need to clean-up all my /tmp/ files for me on Dec 29th, leaving me in the dark and unaware I have to restart my apps.
That's just a dick move. Your intentions might be alright, but the consequences... Damn you!3 -
This guitar looks heavily worn, yet it’s brand new. It’s called a “relic” — the guitar is artificially aged. Relics always cost crazy amount of money compared to regular guitars.
Relics were invented by Keith Richards, when he said “bash ‘em up a bit” to a guitar master builder from Fender, the guitar company.
With one phrase, Keith created a billion dollar industry.8 -
devops - im sick of everyone mis-using this term
it seems like everyone in the industry (even famous ppl and youtubers, not just recruiters) have clung to this word and use it as a blanket statement and it pisses me off. two parts of the word, dev (you know, development) and ops (operations, keeping shit going). yet ppl use this whenever there's more than one machine being used or something. like it's in aws must be devops, it's a cluster of machines must be devops, it's a lot of ci/cd so it's clearly devops.
if youre not keeping a system alive, debugging it, fixing errors in the environment -and- creating said environment then using the operations work to influence your development, how is it devops?
you made a build server with some kind of orchestration tool. how is that deovps?
you have a ci/cd pipeline that's in aws. how is that devops?
you built a cloud cluster in aws/gcp/azure but hand it off to another team that monitors it and pokes and prods. how is that devops?9 -
Who the fuck at google thought it was a good idea to not let you log out from a single account in gmail when multiple are logged in in the browser. You have to log out of all of them all or not at all. And it is a new change, i can remember being able to do that previously. Just why?2

I am starting new iteration of microservice X.

Fuck the idiots yelling monopoly and use that that bullshit execues to justify a system should be changed after a couple of years by a new company.
Especially when its a new banking system that is so poorly developed due to a critical archichical design failture on the authorization layer, resulted in on when a lot of people login at once you had a chance to get someone else session informations instead of your own.
Just being so insecure in general. And dont get me started on how unstable the banking system infrastructure is.
But hey at least the it isnt a monopoly anymore by paying a new company a double digit million amount to develop a new banking system after a couple of years after the last system were developed.6 -
Finally got a new role from testautomation to Embedded sw dev. I will also have to learn Rust for embedded and elixir for web facing side, which is nice!5

That day we had the weekly meeting with my boss to tell him what was new since last week.
We were 2 developers, I did the backend and the other guy did the frontend.
I tell him we had nothing new on the frontend. Literally not even one more line of code.
He tells me he gave the other guy some money the day before to encourage him to engage a bit more on the project.
The meeting is about to end when we receive a message in the development group, the guy said he wasn't going to continue in the project.
Not like that, dude.5 -
Do you ever feel like some days are so damn monotonous? I’m nearing 10 years in the industry and lately my world consists solely of Plug-in development, templated or basic sites, PRs, and documentation galore. How do y’all keep your brain from turning to pure mush? Learning anything cool/new? The Burn out is real. 😖3

New job. Almost all sites are blocked due to "security"... even spotify. I can' listen to the music. Fortunately i have access to dev rant xd4

I can't work
I can't sleep
I can't eat
I can't code
I can't go have fun
I can't have a conversation
Because I've got a new exciting idea "💡" buzzing all over my mind all the time.
It's been 9 days already and it's still exciting, probably even more. I think that means it might be worth going ahead and realising it.6 -
It's official, I'm now the only senior in my team, the other person got promoted for a new position in a new team and now I'm fucked.3

-- Best --
> Submitted my notice of termination for my current job
> Found a new job starting next year
> Can switch from Windows to Linux/MacOS in new job
> Got more time to work on personal projects due to the pandemic
-- Worst --
> Huge amount of software restrictions (current job) almost got several projects at work canceled. Maybe its important to say that the core business of my current workplace is auditing so there are a lot of law regulations which then apply in the softwaredevelopment process.
> New managers that do not have the slightest clue of what they're doing
> Online Teambuilding events
> Absurd amount of segmentation of tools and also different coding guidelines that are used at work. E.g. one team uses jira, another trello, another github issue tracker and so on. -
Tip: Write `throw new Error("problem: <your task for next Monday, and your last thoughts about that>") at the end of your test-file.
Then you come back to work after the weekend and know exactly where you left off!
Thank me later, as I thank my Friday-4pm-me1 -
Finally got rid of my old job I ranted about so much. Started a new one on Monday. A bit anxious and terrified (there is a lot to learn) but it feels good. The team is fun and they know what they are doing. BUT most importantly: they know how to plan projects and know how to intervene if a project is about to run out of resources. NICE.
I'll keep you posted on how it goes1 -
This and Road Rash and Windows 95 and accidentally deleting the soundcard driver to make space for Rollercoaster Tycoon.1

None. As soon as I hear about a new trend I fear it. I fear the huge amount of Medium articles I would encounter...

Deployments, a limerick:
there once was an ops guy from New York,
who was working on deploying a fork.
the docs were weak
the code memory leaked
in a half hour all of production was borked.5 -
Man all I ever do is fix bugs in a giant overgrown calculator, that has references to code before I was even born. It might be new job time
-
By trying to do my best. Doing a good job makes me feel good and gives me even more motivation.
Also by trying something new every time. Either by using new library, new approach do to things or whatever. Just to keep stuff exciting. -
We have a new team member in our team. So I was giving her one to one KT. After KT
She: so are there new changes coming soon?
Me: Yes there will. Now you here I could really use a hand.
She: that's what he said3 -
my boss some months ago: so there is this new project, and we're planning to slowly fade in and gradually increase the time you guys work on this project
new pm last week: welcome to the project, you're now 100% allocated to the new project, that's your highest prio now
me: ...what about the other projects? they might have questions xD
pm: don't worry about that, dealing with that is not your job
my boss this week: yeah no, the other releases are most important for our company. the new project needs to be subordinated and has lower prio, at least lower prio than critical and highly prioritized bugs.
me: so.... who decides which items from which projects i shall prioritize higher than the new project and how much time i shall spend on them?
my boss: it is your job to talk to people, give them estimates and tell them how many items you can work on, so they can decide which items they pick
so basically i'm having the feeling that i need to manage myself here. it will be fun to attend the new project daily standups and tell the new pm all the time that i couldn't do anything because i had no time. anyone else with this experience? is this normal? actually i liked our new pm's attitude "dealing with that is not your job". i should have known it was too good to be true ^^'5 -
I'd like to ask: What's trending at the moment instead....
Either I'm old and senile and missing something, or there is not really sth new.
Okay, JS might be crapping out new frameworks in their common "Not invented here" diarrhea....
But otherwise? What's really new?
I don't really know. I'm not only thinking about languages and stuff, but even in hardware there ain't really a big thing going on in my opinion.
Hab ich wat verpennt?
(Have I overslept?)
We had an interesting and frightening discussion regarding NGINX, as it is russian software today and that a new trend of a true, actively developed webserver is severely lacking... Apache looks semi dead and most other niche webservers, too.
That's all I've seen as a "trend" discussion in the latest time4 -
So I am new to coding — excited to be learning but terrified to get out and find some sort of job when that time comes.8
-
Worst: being forced back into the loud distracting office, to add on to the badness the covid restrictions were not taken very seriously
Best: getting a new full time remote job and an awesome company with some awesome team mates
Bonus is I now work from home fully but can still hang out with my great former coworkers -
I would not consider myself an overachiever by any means, but I must say, I'm quite satisfied with my contributions this year at the new (relatively speaking) job. I got to go back to writing code almost every day, all day, and that sure as hell beats being in meetings all the goddamn time.2
-
Someone: Let's use this XY.
---
Where XY is a new service, like Slack / Jira / ...
---
Yeah. Let's just add another workflow without any planning, thinking etc..
Not that we did that a thousand times already and it always ended in an ever growing pile of shit.
Sheesh 🙄
These pointless discussions...2 -
you know that feel when you're in one or two weeks of vacation and one day, you look into the mirror and you notice you look like 5 years younger and also you're able to actually enjoy things in life and try out new things, and you wonder, what am i doing with my life...2
-
happy new year everyone! not that anything ever changes, but hope is free 😅
i wish all of you a year with very little reason to rant ✨1 -
The new devRant UI is pretty cool and also love the new features in the app.
Good job dfox and trogus.19 -
Up until a couple months ago we had 5 devops. Everything went smoothly af. We could get new environments provisioned in a couple of hours.
Now we have 18 of them. It's already day 3 and still noone has a clue why our env provision scripts are failing.
Well... At least I'm getting paid for sitting and waiting for them to finish this circus 😀1 -
A new update was just released to AltRant!
This update features:
- Massive UI responsiveness fixes and enhancements, including many fixes for UI bugs, fixes and things that needed tweaking

- Progress with Android compatibility (replaced incompatible libraries for compliance with Mutata)
- Enhanced security with the Keychain

The HR for my last employer sucks.
After I left, my employer changed record keepers for the 401k before I could rollover the funds to an IRA. I thought, “It will be fine. I’ll wait until they finish setting up the new record keeper. Then, I can do the rollover.”
When the blackout period was about to end, I didn’t receive any instructions about the new record keeper. The funds had been transferred already and I called the old record keeper to confirm it was done by my former employer. I think, “Maybe they forgot to contact me because I’m no longer an employee.”
I email HR and ask when I can expect instructions on how to access the new record keeper. Idiots send me instructions for the old record keeper and how to file for a distribution. HR had actually called the old record keeper for these instructions when the funds were no longer with the old record keeper. WTF 😤
It takes all of my strength to write a civil email. I remind them that funds were transferred nearly 2 weeks ago by them to a new record keeper. I repeat that I need instructions on how to access the new record keeper and I don’t need instructions on how to file for a distribution from the old record keeper.
I’m effing glad I don’t work there anymore. I can’t deal with that HR’s idiocy anymore.1 -
Question for those that worked alone with a project manager, and were you covered multiple parts, frontend, backend, mobile and you basically have good friendship with the project owner/manager but the job got bored or wanted to switch jobs because you wanted to change environment.
What was the period you informed your employer/project manager in advance about your resignation and leaving? 2 weeks, a month? more? And was it enough time for the manager to find replacement? Did you leave in good terms?3 -
Stick to one project about which you want to learn but don't know how to do it,complete it...and now you have learnt something new
-
I gave backend dev my frontend code and he had no idea about SCSS.
So he copied the compiled AND minified CSS, prettified/formatted it and put his own changes by searching the class names.
And he had made lots of design changes arbitrarily so when new changes were to be made I had to cope with it.
As a hack I kept his css as it is and compiled another file with new changes. And now there's two css files all huge, like 800kb multiply by two huge.
It covers about 33+ custom pages with all the bells and whistles.
#let me do the frontend
#I wont bother you either4 -
Learn Rust and Elixir because of my hopefully new and exciting role. I want to become production ready developer for these languages as quickly as possible. But more than anything I want my new role not making me hate my profession.
And also I would like to start a long duration relationship. Can’t have it all though.3 -
Do you ever meet peopao awesome that you literally have to stop and process it through..
Just met one such guy at my new workplace and as soon as he opened his mouth, I could sense that dude is fucking next level personality.4 -
Just...Macbooks
(sigh)
The entire day wasted having to install a new OS to install a new Xcode to export an app, only to find the xcode was installed under a different user (who has long since gone from the company) to then have to look up what to do, to then just sit...........and....................wait.............for Xcode to download again.
And I know when I try to export my app (which had zero problems being exported to Android) I'm going to hit an entire day tomorrow of bug fixing for ios sh...stuff7 -
Client has decided to buy another server because the old one is too slow
Manager: how long will it take to move our apps to the new server
Me: maybe 3-4 hours
15 hours later
Manager: why isn't it finished yet?
Me: because I have to install a lot of missing things on the new server, and I have to google a lot to find them
Me (thinking): because your 15-years old apps suck big time4 -
Switching workplace after new year.
Already told boss I'm quitting last week. And it is like as soon as It was official I lost all patience with the company bullshit and lost the little interest I had left for my daily work. The codebase seemes bad before but now it feel 100x worse.
Work ethic keeps me from doing nothing but man I just want to get out.
Will be so nice to work with a new project and code base.1 -
Code what you enjoy. Don't code what people say will "improve your skills." If something interests you, learn about it. Also, try broadening your interests. Learn new things that you may not have thought about before. It might be fun.5
-
Despite all the code bugs, manager worries, colleagues' annoyances, self pity, low self esteem, constant guilt all the way, we are still alive and kicking
I guess 2022 will be nothing different but I also wish it will be super interesting and satisfying
Wish You And Your Families a Very Happy New Year 2022!1 -
I propose renaming the title "project manager" into "plim". Why? Well, there is an old soviet nursery rhyme:
I came up with a new word
A funny word called Plim
And I repeat it over:
Plim, Plim, Plim!
It jumps around shouting
Plim, Plim, Plim
Nobody cares about it
Plim, Plim, Plim -
This comes from android view pager.
You need to overriding the getItem(..) method to always return a new instance. Anything else is just pointless because;
The method instantiateItem(..) on the other hand returns an already existing instance if one exists. -
I dont like programming languages where "there is more than one way to do it".
There should be one way to do things, it makes it easy for developers to understand code others have written, it makes it easier to start working in new teams etc etc.23 -
I don't care about God's existence but somehow I'm meeting the deadlines always. It's a new thing for me.
I have stopped paying attention to my work due to interviews and somehow my work performance is getting better and better each day.
All I needed was to work less and give estimation according my mood each day.8 -
I wrote a bot. Does it count as making a new friend from coding?
It writes me bunch of interesting news everyday, maybe it will get a name and start speaking the news stories so I don’t have to read them.2 -
Finally got my first dev job. I am looking at the code base for my company. And it’s like I know how to code in this language. But I don’t know half of the advanced shit they’re doing. I understand they have more experience than me. But I’m just not sure how to catch up to them. Or be even on the same level as them? I guess just more out of office learning?
I can read what they’re putting in the code and understand how it works. But like how they came up with it I have no clue. I guess I’ll learn over time and have to put in some extra man hours.5 -
New AltRant update!
This update features a fix for instability issues in the Notifications tab. All users that are in the testing group - please update soon! I am giving you a 3-day update window.1 -
Recruiter: We are looking for a full-stack expert. You have taken multiple apps from conception to deployment, and have experience and opinions on the best technologies to use and why. You should be comfortable implementing new features from scratch, making changes to existing features and writing complex migrations on production data.
Dev: lol4 -
I don't know what the fuck is happening rn I created repo on gitlab and tried to make changes from terminal it refused. Tried every fucking combination as I thought I must be doing something wrong .
Got fed up made a new account , made a new repo but gitlab doesn't allow me to upload files from there fucking website too.
Now I am getting error 500 from terminal because I can't clone my repo as it says this repo doesn't exist.
Now I can only imagine that there might be some problem with gitlab it's 4 in the morning, I should probably sleep. -
In all countries except the USA, Chanel logo is just "Chanel, Paris". In the USA, it's fucking abomination "Chanel® inc. New-York, N.Y. 10019".
People from the USA, please tell me, is American bureaucracy really that bad?5 -
I wanted to make some changes to one project on GitHub. Forked, changed things ( in new branch), make PR, waited.
My PR got positive feedback, but was closed without merging.
Upon me asking why, I was banned from all their repos.
Inclusivity anyone?1 -
My company wants me to add new features to their existing cappy system when I'm on my notice period...3

That one colleague coming up with questions unrelated to his teams field, not grasping your explanation, then answering bitchy because he doesn't understand and finally sends you a new (totally moronic) jira ticket after you stop responding to him, totally killing your last bits of motivation and concentration for that day.
fuck you. -
Hey guys! I'm new here, and also in programming... I'm finishing my studies in Python and I would like to ask you a question, if I can... what else should I learn that would help me? I intend to start my "career" as a web developer, at least for now... did I do it right? am i starting wrong?12
-
I don't understand why people are so preoccupied with new languages and scared to try them out. At least half of the language features are a rehash of the same ideas and the other half are 2-3 ideas. Seriously. I find it distasteful that people in my co are so scared of learning new shit. NEED To GTFO.3

Developer's frustration..
I currently don't have the space (believe it or not) to accommodate two screens onto my desk.
I've been developing on a single 15" laptop for years (since 2010).
I'm getting tired of constantly having to switch between windows. lol.
Mmmmust figure out wayyyy to incorporate new screen into my setupppp. lol14 -
I've just finished installing Ubuntu Unity 22.04 on a new SSD installed on my wife's computer; it's so relaxing the fresh air of a new Linux distribution installed.3

I was today years old when I created my first node.js Hello World app. I managed to add some basic routing with express.js, managed to read a mysql table and some JSON. I'm starting to 'get' the node.js environment. Shows you're never too old to learn something new.3

My boss has been pretty insistent on us writing good tests (which I wholeheartedly agree with) for our new project, and being the less-experienced junior that I am, asked if we could get some guidance or a demonstration.
Took two weeks, but I finally got it said guidance... by opening a pull request with tests that weren't absolutely perfect.1 -
Every time there is a new project, we programmers swear to ourselves that we will code it better this time. We get elated that we do not have to deal with the tech debts piled up in the old module.1

I rewrote a giant VBA workbook (lots of business formulas, custom pivots of the data) into Java apps/microservices so that new tabs, other reports can be easily added using (JSON) data from the other apps.
In general, I was the only dev in the team that understood that monoliths are hard to change or scale... -
A new year, a new job.
After a years hard graft learning front end code I finally landed my first dev job!
Even though the job is a while away, there will be nothing stopping me getting there and learning all I can in this industry.

Started working for a new company as a data lead, created a couple of basic lambda functions for a pipeline... 5 approvals and three weeks later the functions haven't even been pushed to UAT (which I'm not allowed access to).. Have I been lucky before or is this dysfunctional..?

Ernest Hemingway and @bittersweet once competed in whose shortest story is the saddest. Ernest wasn't original, boasting his old "baby shoes" charade. But @bittersweet, proving the culture is changed, and new talent beats the old, won, with this story of his:

I recently graduated from university and landed a job as a junior devops engineer.
There’s so much tech stacks to learn and I’m in the process of converting a legacy CI system composed of only bash scripts to Python and I feel that 8 hours a day isn’t enough and I often feel that after working hours, I should be reviewing more so that the next day I can be more productive.
I am given tasks to do but I keep feeling the pressure that I need to prove myself.
Is this normal? I’m not used to this learning pace.3 -
I started a new job, got through on-boarding and took my first ticket. Made my modification to the code base and the tests fail .. each time I run them .. on different tests .. randomly.
What the hell have I gotten myself into?4 -

Today I discovered a new feature of my electric toothbrush that I've had for years...
Sort of obvious afterwards but when I put it back on the charging stand, it automatically turns off.
Guess now I have a reason to put it back each time after use though2 -
So I've just been proposed by my (now ex) team leader to be the next team leader. I'm scared to death because this is something completely new to me.
What are your views on the move from development to team leader? How did you handle the transition?4 -
So... This month I will start a new role in a new company as a Tech Lead. This is my first time in this position. Any suggestions or tips from you guys are appreciated.16

Jan/Feb: Decide if I wanna accept a better paying position and leave my family/friends/country behind or stay and try to negotiate first in my current position.
I was offered a new position this week with literally double the pay but I'd have to move.
Rest of the year: Better myself in every way I can think of. -
The new job is sucking all of my motivation away. Been a while since I’ve did any coding just for fun. It’s tedious to even start learning new things after work.. how do you people deal with it?7

It's the third time in two weeks that I've updated something and caused it to break. Different packages and different projects each time. Each time I've updated at night and tested it and made sure everything was okay only to be woken up in the morning by complaining customers and a newfound bug. Better lay off the updates for now.5

Just an appreciation post. Ant Design is the best React Library that I have encountered so far. It's so easy and clean to create new modules. It has already built-in features, especially for Tables.
As a backend developer who has been working in front-end for the past 6 months, I love this library. -
Hi all, how do you deal with imposter syndrome?
I just joined a new job 3 mths back and am struggling with feeling productive. I feel my manager thinks I might be incompetent as my project deliveries are getting delayed.
I was burnt out as last job and it hasn't been easy picking up domain knowledge in a new workplace esp with wfh.
Any advice on how to deal with such a situation ?3 -

Working with new guy who is "senior" is such a pain. We had a factory file that is used to populate tables in endpoint tests. The new guy decided to add a static util method called createTestRecord() to a query builder model. Fucking query builder calls in a static method in a query builder class. I send him messages expressing concerns regarding his approach but never got anything back. The guy just ignored me and asked me to review his pr.

A new position is opened at my company and I am tasked to conduct interviews for the candidates. I have no experience whatsoever in this.
If you’ve had any experience, how did you approach this? How did you conduct technical interviews with the candidates? We’re talking about candidates that have 3+ years of experience.
The position is for front end, mainly ReactJS.8 -
So I changed the language and keyboard layout on my windows machine and now it is stuck for 5 minutes after signing in, waiting for... something, before you can use it as usual. It's like I'm back in 1995. But at least I can use my new keyboard properly I guess.

Today, I started a new project with Rails. I used always an own auth implementation, now I thought I'll give devise a try. Hell... the documentation is bad, really really bad. I keep myself motivated by reading about new technologies, language features and constantly trying to improve my code.
I see great reward in having fast and readable code. -
Any heuristics on using new JS/CSS features?
I thought of waiting 2 years, but I just saw an article that recommended waiting 6 months.
Another factor could be covered percentage, based on caniuse. 98%+ is the coverage of things we can all agree we can use, so is 95%+ enough for new features? 90%+ (so 1 in 10 people wouldn't get the expected experience)?5 -
I'm... Confused? Undecided?
I like the place where I work because of the people... Even the worst are nice (tough sooner or later I'm gonna have words with the engineer... I had no problems so far but when he gets mad his a dick).
I'm being prazed a lot... One of my bosses say that I'm a find and every time I talk about looking for other jobs everyone tries to make me change my mind.
On the down side... They pay like shit. I should be getting double at entry...
Machines have no mantainance... One is even working without oil and that brakes my hearth.
I'm still a temp... One would think the owners would be doing everything to keep me, since I can get to a lvl that others take years and I keep finding mistakes that more experience workers don't see.
Well... I'll wait and see. They can't keep me as a temp for more than a year... -

The most straight forward way is to create a crisis and then offer the "only" solution. Make that solution a weapon and you are done. The masses gladly accept the solution. At all times appear benevolent. Silence dissenting voices swiftly. Make the dissenters look like nutters and publicly humiliate them and apply labels to them. Labels are effective because it creates pariahs. People like to not be singled out and called names.
What do you end up with? People who distrust government and the institutions. I don't know how this benefits the orchestrators (how to spell) of the genocide. Perhaps if the numbers are small enough they can just be rounded up and killed by force rather than coercion.
I get the feeling this approach has been used in the past. Like it has been at least tested on smaller scales. Maybe even on past civilizations. Did we learn to do this from space visitors? I wonder.
2021 has certainly been an interesting year. I used to think people were just stupid. This year has confirmed that for me. But I am not sure stupid is the right word. They are certainly book smart. Maybe naive is a better word. I pray and hope 2022 turns out better for people. Maybe they start seeing signs they have been lied to by people they trust. Maybe not. When you are in the matrix it is hard to see through the facade. The matrix feels very real, until it doesn't.

I have some down time at work & nobody on my team has any extra work to go around, so I thought I'd use the down time to learn a new skill. I am a front end developer who mostly works with HTML, CSS, PHP & a small amount of JavaScript. I do a lot of work with flex box, and frameworks like bootstrap. I've been considering learning angular or working on my php as that's my weak area. Any suggestions on cool things to learn and/or where to learn them?1

About to start my new job (on Monday).
I went to the new office once to get the new work laptop (a fucking Mac).
They also told me be fast in setting up the work email as the client i'll be working on will send some instruction on how to use their accounts.
Even heard them since... hopefully they'll just pay me for doing basically nothing as I now have literally NOTHING to work on when I'll start.
Also, they told me something about the project I'll be working on, and to be honest, the whole project would take about 2 months to be done from scratch, but we have until November to make it work... I'm so fucking confused!2 -
So I recently started a new position as a Node JS dev, and on my first day I've been assigned to the DevOps team... The offer and the interview had me believe I was going to be actually writing code not config and yaml files5

Advice to New Devs: Peer review code with co-workers and constantly learn and improve. Ask a lot of questions and during your down time learn something new. :)

When using the new iMac 🖥, how come the images for apps are crystal clear (apart from steam apps), but as soon as it comes to playing a video the Mac just decides to lower the image quality dramatically?3

I've been feeling a lot of burnout these past few days/weeks... But like only in a specific programming language? Which is an issue cause I mainly work on python and I can't seem to bring myself to do that while learning and working with new languages/frameworks in classes are no problem.2

I am a stupid monkey that spilled coffee all over his keyboard, and now it seems to be EOL.
Looking for some "inspiration" - what keyboards (and mice, might also just buy a whole new set) are you guys using?9 -
Really minor gripe, but how comes that on a new install of Regolith ping is not installed but mtr is?
I think it's not limited to Regolith... But that's weird, isn't it? -

I'm currently showing my new junior the ropes in the workplace. We'll be using Gitpod for pair programming.
Me: "okay so I think Gitpod will use my configuration if we use the workspace I made... are you familiar with vim keybindings?"
Junior: "😢"1 -
when you're at the end of December 2021, and less than an hour left for a new year to come.
"Aw!! I thought it's still January 2021" -
Sometimes I think about changing jobs just to be the new guy again and be able to work in peace without constant IMs popping up. :/

Imagine a bitcoin wallet that doubles everything you send to it, but the real one, without a scam.
Transhumanism is just that. You sell your soul to it, and in return, you get a superior entity, albeit entirely different.
I feel like the god Odin hanging off Yggdrasil, sacrificing himself to himself and gaining an entirely new kind of power.1
