Client: "Any update on the feature I have requested?"

Client: "Do you think the it can be released before midnight?"
I stopped replying. Fuck everyone and everything.

I tried something new. Otherwise, I am hitting a wall. -
Hi guys, I'm new here, discovered devRant randomly by browsing only. Bit sad I didn't knew about it earlier.
Greetings from France BTW 😄8 -
Getting an email from friends at work after i am about to leave for a new job. Developers showing love3

!rant
This week I started a new job.
My role changed from "Full-stack-web-developer-sysadmin-DBA-helpdesk-strange-person-fixing-stuff-around" to "Back-end Developer".
Moreover, it's a full remote position (so difficult to find in Italy!), so:
1. I can wake up 1.5 hours later;
2. I don't have to waste anymore 2 hours every fucking day driving in traffic to reach the workplace;
3. I can use my fucking bathroom;
4. I can drink hot tea in August without being criticized. 😀
I'm fucking happy!13 -
Hello, I'm new to devRant.
My name is Floydian, I just wanted to say:
console.log('Hello devRant');41 -
That moment when @dfox likes your comment and you feel successful in this social platform even though you're new.25
-
Great day! Resigned my job, signed my new job AND the stickers arrived! Thanks a bunch for making my day even greater than it was :) @dfox3
-
Hi I am new here!
My friend told me that devRant has a great community, he told me to post here and see what happens...14 -
I started at a new company. I met tons of people the first day. Third day on the job a guy comes up to me and says hello. I’m like, “Hey. What’s up. Thanks for welcoming me look forward to working with you and etc. I’m still learning names. Se ya round. I should get back to work.” Totally like I would greet the janitor or anyone else.
He leaves and people tell me that he was the CEO. I kill myself laughing.6 -
My new year resolution: 3840 X 2160
🐒
PS: don't give me a hard time in the comments. I know it's an old joke. 😫4 -
New dev couldn't get his laptop set up and screens working. After a day struggling I walked over and recommend he plug in the power cord......3
-
This community is by far the best thing I've discovered in 2016. Been lurking for a while, thought it was time to post this.
System.out.println("HAPPY NEW YEAR!");3 -
My new computer finally arrived. Now I'll be able to run Visual Studio (which my laptop couldn't while connected to my monitor at the same time). 👍16
-
So this mornings i was helping my 2.5year old daughter to count the lines on her potty training table.
me: look there are 1,2,3,4 and 5
she steps back and looks at it for a minute and says : FOUR
i was about to correct her and say no there 5 but then i thought well if your on a zero based list your technically right!!
My mornings are fun!!4 -
Finally got time to share my new laptop. I love its rgb backlight keyboard. I will buy a NVMe SSD and second monitor asap.7
-
So the new laptop stopped powering on. Nothing I did worked, so I used the warranty service. I probably should have taken the SSD out...18
-

Started a new job today... but I couldn't actually do anything because I had to wait for 4 hours to get an ID card (necessary for computer access because security) only to get told to come back tomorrow to try again. Off to a great start!!
At least my manager realized that this is fucked and filed a complaint against their department. -
My new year's resolutions:

Just started a new job! No rant material so far, I'm just grateful, i was out of work because of the 'rona6
-
I have invited a new person to devrant! He is in the programming sub-team on my school's robotics team.
He uses Linux mint.. and I hate him for it. But aside from that, he seems like a cool guy.
As always, feel free to downvote the crap out of him if he starts messing around here.
Anyways, everyone welcome @hyperlisk !24 -
Arrrrrry new year, you bloody pirates!
For those few of us still running fully static sites: remember to update the year constant, re-compile and upload.4 -
Got a great new job, great athmosphere here, great salary and exciting projects :) looking forward to the future here!11
-
Worst part about getting a new laptop: losing all my stickers
Best part of getting a new laptop: New Stickers!1 -
Aspiring Android developer here transitioning to a new career in programming. Stumbled across this great community! Sup guys! OK now back to some Saturday afternoon coding ✌9
-
Been a Debian and Ubuntu user since the age of fifteen (21 now). Let's start a new journey! Installing Fedora as we speak 😀8

Awesome! New server!
With a newer version of MySQL
With new bugs on my websites
Seriously, this new version destroyed all the queries6 -
When you go to a new company and hear this in a companywide meeting... " we do rolling restarts twice a week it's just the nature of doing Java"1
-
Got my new PC up and running!
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3400G (APU)
Cooler: Scythe Mugen 5
Mobo: Asus B450-F Gaming ROG Strix
RAM: Crucial Ballistix 2x16GB

The cooler is massively oversized for the CPU, but perfect for a silent PC.

As much as I loved Win 7, but it's over, and Win 10 just isn't acceptable.24 -
Hmmmm its almost new year im having finally holiday from school and all that stuff but still working on ROMs but well another story and i dont have a thing to rant about which i think is kinda good but sad at the same time.
So all i wanted to say to you guys that 2017 was an amazing year full of learning new stuff and trying, meeting some cool people.
I have done a lot of work this year.
Created a sort algo which well was already created but i didnt know that sadly.
Working on encryption algo (Still)
And lot more but thats not what the rant is about.
It was as i said above an amazing year and im sure we had a loooooooot of fun at devRant.
Some big changes happened this year at devRant mostly the web UI and livestream which was totally amazing.
Also a lot of thing happened here looooot of awesome things and i finally updated my fucking firefox extension for 57 standard (Yeah i was late on that one).
I surely would have said more but nothing comes up in my mind now only some quantum mechanics stuff but well thats not what the rant is about neither.
So Happy New Year to all of you guys and let the 2018 be more awesome then 2017;5 -
funny coincidence happened at work the other day.
One dev ask to get more ram for his pc so we sent him a link to download more ram... after all the laughs we actually gave hom more ram.
The next day, we had performance issue on our dev servers, and after checking the VM's where missing 4gb of ram each from the original setup... so i poke my dev and say see now we know where the downloaded ram came from XD. man those small things really make my day -
*hmm let's try a new Linux distro... *
*creates backup, bootable disk and everything*
*installs new distro*
*reboots into old system just to be sure*
*boots into new dust to after checking the old system*
Idk I'm weird... (got triple boot Linux by the way) -
How do you guys learn something new? Do you first learn things deeply and then implement or straight away start using it? I find it confusing sometimes.10
-
What happened to the warm welcome that new users received back in the day? Now when someone posts their first rant people bash on details and give them no chance. I remember posting half-dumb rants, but no one gave me shit for that. It takes time to grow into a community, you can't just expect people to behave identically to the rest. Makes me a bit disappointed to be fair.11
-
So which are you new year's resolutions?
Mine are:
Learn C,C++ and Node
Organize my time to do more with it
And code5 -
Life as a software developer is a bit similar to a nurse... they often both patch bleeding holes as a service ;-)1
-
New year's goals: actually release a fucking game and maybe finish my book!
Maybe 2018 will be the year I can finnaly call myself a released developer! -
I'm on my train, leaving after my last day of work. I didn't hate that job, quite the opposite actually, but Im sure the new job will give me more opportunities to grow professionally.
Now I'm just sad I'll miss all of the familiar faces, and all the usual things I was doing.
So many emotions and I don't even know where to start.
Oh and I'm drunk too.1 -
Happy new year from Shibuya!
Fucking antifa communists came and ruined it right after new year though..6 -
IMAO, a new programming language/technology is like a new cute girl at your school/workplace. We give it a lot of attention and tend to ignore older programming languages/technologies2
-
Hi everyone.
I wish you all a 2017 full of code, of problems to fix, of oportunities to learn new languages and above all full of bugs to fix because from this, is from wherr we learn the most. -
Happy new year everyone.
For everyone yet to catch up to midnight, let this be a pre-new year post!5 -
I need new mobile hardware because my old netbook from 2010 just doesn't cut it anymore.
I've ordered this fellow here: https://tuxedocomputers.com/en/...
AMD 4700U (TDP 15 W), iGPU only, 2x16 GB 3200 RAM, 2 TB Evo 860. Delivery in November because APU-only laptops are totally hot RN.
Maybe I can install Mint on that if I go for a 5.8 mainline kernel. At least it has Intel wifi, not Broadcom.12 -
Applied for a new job today! It's in a different city, but it's with a company I'm familiar with, doing tech I'm familiar with. They provided my current employer with managed hosting and occasional bugfix and upgrade support before we completely changed our tech stack last year.
I've been feeling sort of stuck in a hole for a while. I'm unsure about moving, but it's partly of my own making and I was unsure about starting here when all the tech was new to me. I've been here 3.5 years, my first actual dev job, and I do think I've done what I came here for. -
Released a new version of my website. What do you think about it, guys? :)
https://christoph-fricke.de5 -
when you realize that performance issue you just could not figure out is the SYS admin taking a full back of your production machine during peek traffic hours
-
In other news:
I've been notified that my new working visa is ready so I can start to work with the new company that offered me an overall-better job position.
Yay! -
After struggling all morning with my laptop, I finally accepted the fact that my 1TB hard drive died. Now I'm on a dilemma: Should I replace the drive and upgrade the RAM, or should I buy a new laptop altogether?
Current laptop is Lenovo G50-45, with AMD APU, 6GB (4+2 on graphics) and said 1TB drive.
Before this misfortune befell me, I was planning to upgrade the RAM to 8+2.
Now I'm at a loss, but my folks are willing to help.
Should I buy a new drive and RAM or should I start looking a new more dev oriented laptop? If the latter, any recommendations?3 -
Hi i am new programmer i have start by c programming please help me any suggestions about programming11
-
I need a new hobby. Programming doesn't excite me anymore, at least not how it did a couple of years back. I'd like to get into robotics and stuff, but everything's expensive where I live. I'd like to get into cars, also too expensive where I live. I like playing video games, but I suck at them and they bring me no feeling of having accomplished something. Sports? Suck at them too. I'd like to ski, but I live in South America. I just don't know what to do with my free time. Programming feels like a chore nowadays, but it's all I have.38
-
Grass is always greener on the other side.
Whatever your problem.. my advice:
Time to get a new job! -
Part of me wants to save money to buy a pixelbook (yeah fight me) but part of me wants my new AMD build...
Decisions are tough kids...2 -
A new system developed at CSAIL was shown to have stronger security guarantees than Intel's existing approach for preventing so-called "timing attacks" like Meltdown and Spectre, made possible by hardware vulnerabilities.

How long do you recommend 'sticking it out' in a new role? I moved 2,500km for a new job and so far I have been training on the worst development platform I have ever seen, produced diagrams, printed documents and taken meeting notes 😡. #IJustWantToProgram

Happy new year everyone!
Yearly reminder to update your copyright texts.
PS: I worked at a place where I had to file a fucking Jira to get the copyright year updated in the website’s footer which was essentially a content change.1 -
First Haxk20 of 2020.
What do you fucking expect ? Its 25 minutes into new year and something happened ?
NO.
Happy new year !
Or shall i say. Happy new decade ?5 -
So the little project I was working on goes to the side. I'm taking on a new one: a little pong game, a hello world into NES programming4
-
Hope you all of you had a great 2019 and heres to an even better 2020.

Udemy is having a sale. Offering lots of courses for 10$ only. Thought it'd be okay to share with fellow developers eager to learn new stuff.7

How relevant is learning Java in right now? Want to start with a new language, and don't know which will be the most useful?21

Just signed the offer paperwork with a new company!! Excited for a great opportunity with great benefits! Had to tell devRant before telling my boss, wish me luck!3
-
Heard someone say they don't celebrate their birthday nor new years the traditional way. It made me curious, i asked and she said.
"I am born once physically, that is my birthday. Every year there after is my new year and that is when i celebrate my new year or existence"
Very interesting and i can respect that :) soo mamy people with beautiful minds.3 -
Got my new 2TB HDD delivered today a few days early (expected on Monday). Time for some data migration and that new OS smell!
I think my upgrade strategy will be a Ship of Theseus story in the end. -
!Rant
All Devs in the room!! Have a happy, healthy, prosperous, safe new year filled with joy.
Happy coding!! -
It's not a new year unless you spend your first day back firefighting shit that broke over the holidays 🙃
-
(Not a rant)
New to devRant :^)
Tell me the reasons why you started programming.
I want to know since there are so many devs out there..9 -
So tomorrow I start at a new project - super pumped. Looking forward to learning a new language too - Scala. And..
....
I am finally taking the plunge...it's time to throw myself into Linux, as the org has gone all Linux no more Windows! -
me :: Musician a, Developer b => a -> b
This week I reached the end of a long journey and the start of the next one!
When I signed up here I shared a rant about where I was at the time:
https://devrant.com/rants/1279742/...
This week I accepted a decent salaried role as the leading Data Scientist in a well funded nonprofit organisation based close to my home! I’ll be the only technical professional in software development or analytics in the organisation and it’s a new role, so I imagine there’ll be a reasonable degree of flexibility in figuring things out and implementing them.
Have spent the last week (and will continue until my start date) building up a realistic collection of best practices while brushing up on tools they use (as well as tools and methodologies that I plan to bring with me).
After over a decade working as a self employed freelance, I’m looking forward to them change and to building out on different areas of my skillset!1 -
I start my first "real" job on Monday. I will be one of roughly three new junior full stack developers on a team of 15 senior devs. The company has a casual dress code and they allow headphones. What should I expect? I want to grow and I don't want to be a nuisance, I also want to earn a reputation and become respected when I do have something to say.7
-
So, this Thursday I'm starting new job. Finally I can say arrivederci to any WordPress and support things. I'm gonna work in Laravel for minimum 2.5 months and then it's quite possible I will also work in .NET. I'm pumped by this, but also I will have to learn a lot just in time.1
-
Two months in my new job, no task assigned to me yet. Not even one. There's been a budget reallocation, and the team just got dissolved. Will probably be moved to a new team (or not?). Part of me enjoys the free time I'm getting (I get to work on my side projects) but it's kind of depressing that I can't prove to the company how much I love building things while at the same time helping the company. 😔4
-
Happy new year boys and girls.
Let’s hope the new one is not gonna be as fucked up
as the last one.2 -
using new web technologies with incomplete documentation is a PITA. Well... time for a guessing game then!2
-
2017 in a nutshell for me:
New year new me! This year I'm going to use a version control system!
Uses git for 3 hours and feels proud. Later forgets about it and never uses it again -
Rant but also !rant
When I got the new remote dev job, there was no laptop purchase involved. We were down a computer at home when a desktop died and there was a lot of sharing going on with only one laptop. So we spent more than we planned to for Christmas and bought a replacement for the dead desktop so I could have more use of one for my job.
Yesterday my new boss says "Oh, we should get you a new laptop. Here's some money."
Oh well, at least this way there is more to go around!3 -
The feeling when you've spent a good week working on making super new tech work with super old tech... and finally get it working.
On cloud nine ATM. -
If only there was a way for the peeps who listed 'new job for 2018' to congregate and motivate each other 🙋4
-
Isn't it weird that some parts of the world have crossed over to the next decade and some haven't. (If you consider 2020 the start of a new decade).
Anyways cheers to the end a year and the beginnings of a new one. Wishing everyone a very Happy New Year4 -
So ive been seing a couple funny unattended PC pranks lests here yours!
my ultimate favourite : when someone walk of without locking his PC i go and switch his mouse to left handed. its hilarious how some ppl take for ever to figure it out.
so funny and constructive, you can gage problems solving on the fly! plus the average i now lock my pc goes up 90%7 -
Prigression is stopped at the current job. I work with PHP, java and other related languages aaand jquery. I feel like I should start learning vue/angular and rewrite the 2000line jquery mess i have now for one of the projects.
Working as a freelancer after work - how do you guys find time to learn new languages/libraries and have a life at the same time?2 -
hey I am new here. Hope so this platform is different from fucking social media apps where user just post shit about anything10

Me everytime I send a message with my new keyboard:

Me everytime I code with my new keyboard:

What kind of apartment could a typical programmer afford in New York?
I am from Europe and don't consider moving to the US. I am just curious32 -
What new thing(s) are you trying to get in a better habit of doing? What are you trying to get out of the habit of doing?2
-
Just got a new work laptop which is absolutely awesome. Only bad thing is that i can't transfer the sticker swag :/4
-
I wish I have a better academic year with great professors and wonderful coursework so I don't have to rant as much,
But then, I'm starting to like DevRant. So cross that out. I hope for a more challenging year while still being manageable, and very very INTERESTING.
Happy new year, people. -
I am new here and don't know what is Rant & what is devRant all about ... Please tell me . I downloaded it from play store because of good rating. 😅😅5
-
yeah we have a guy that actively paints himself into corners. last time was an api he was saying yeah there just this last field to put in, then when you open the code because of the bs reaspn he gives you for not finishing it you realize you have to wreak everithing and start pver cuz there is no ways in hell this would work. and thats just the tip of the iceberg....
-
Attended KubeCon this week in San Diego. Was amazing great speakers great ppl all around.
Its amazing to see an open source community get together to share. I was not expecting there were goin to be more than 12k attendees!! -
About to start a new job in a few weeks. I haven't been the 'new guy' in a couple years. Any advice?12

Deciding to do some work is much harder than actually doing any. This New Year Depression is killing me.

Happy new year guys and gal. Been a great year and hope next year would be bring good luck and prosperity to all dev rant community here.

So am I the only one that hates everything about the new Teams update? Tbf, the zooming function is cool. But I just want to use full screen.7

Reading code and getting that face palm moment
String code = customer.getCode();

Got a new job, already learning a lot and nice and helpful colleagues. 😄 Except I find it really hard to get used to their codebase because it's huge! How long does it take for some of you to get used to the new code base of your new job?3 -
I'm new to coding and I'm looking for someone who might help me Learn. I'm working on learning c++. (Sorry if this is the wrong community for this)6
-
Well guys we made it, its finaly 01-13-17. (For our non metric fellas 13-01-17 ) how do we call this new month?1
-
So I'm pretty fluent in Java, C# and C and now I want to learn something new. I have played around with C++ a little bit and hated it for being so bloated. What are your suggestions? I'm thinking of maybe trying some functional language or maybe plain Javascript. What do you think?2
-
So Stack Exchange (parent of Stack Overflow) is trying to add new features to help new users feel welcomed there and people are still behaving like there is a threat to their cult.
"You should be nice to everyone, not just new user"
So why don't you remember that when you deal with a new user?

Finally moved into New Position in a DEV Center, feels good to get more interesting requests and challenges :)
-
Working on fixing a problem and broke something else! HOW? 😩😭😭
...and I still have not fixed the new problem
🤦🏽♂️4 -
Going through some code I was handed to do an emergency project... Think of an aspx site that follows no design rule, like database access directly in the code behind. No models ect. So I'm going through this section that calls a function good start. Open the function find a class that contain code to access the database.. Humm ok this part look better that the rest. Read the code that validates if it exist in the database and gets the type back. So far so good then there is a get details function call.... Open up the fct ... Started crying... There is a 200+ lines switch case that goes over the type previously fetched..... And the type is stringed compare in the biggest switch case I've ever seen.... Fthis... I'm out1

Two days left until I finally start my first job in IT. Have had an adventurous journey through the mechanical and electronical world throughout my education, but I think, I will finally arrive, when I start this new challenge.1 -
I want to learn a new language this year, any suggestions? I'm thinking C++ for robotics applications and generally getting used to a lower level language.2

Advice to New Devs: Peer review code with co-workers and constantly learn and improve. Ask a lot of questions and during your down time learn something new. :)

How do you go about introducing new technologies to your company/team?
Whether it’s writing the next API in another language or using a new framework/library/approach?6
