So there's one guy working on a Linux machine (everyone else is on a Mac) and it always caused problems because it kept freezing/crashing.
now he's going to get a Mac
turned out there was no swap assigned

Swap - Used: 0 Free: 0 Total: 0

At least the mystery has been solved

    I run all of my Linux boxes without swap. Just depends on how much ram you have

    I have compressed swap disk in ram :)

    Swap isn't actually necessary for a Linux machine to run. It is only used when the OS runs out of RAM.

    I can't imagine using a pc without something like "indicator multiload" always on display
