Nothing distracts me more than people eating in an otherwise quiet office. It makes me so livid that i usually leave the room for a coffee refill or bathroom break and hope they are done by the time I'm back.

I can code while holding a conversation, I barely even notice when people do phone calls or skype meetings next to me, but hearing people chew and breathe through their nose while smelling their lunch just annihilates me.

If an office I quiet, they have bigger problems than someone eating at his/her desk

We have it as a rule that the the one who wants to eat asks the others: "Do you mind that I eat here?" And it's not a democracy, if one minds, they go elsewhere.

Even in places where this rule is not applied, I recommend phrasing your discomfort over fleeing the scene. "I noticed you are eating in the office, it distracts me from working, I'd wish you'd go in the kitchen for that." Most times people don't want to be rude, they are just oblivious.

Also fleeing is not a feasible long term strategy to deal with conflicts ;)

One of my previous jobs had a rule about not eating at your desk. It was great, no food smells in the office, no crumbs and stuff on peoples desks and a great atmosphere in the kitchen area!

The idea of eating food while using my computer makes me shiver, oily keyboard and mouse ftl.
