Depends on the level of webDev you want to compare to "software engineering"

Basic sites and blogs for example, probably not comparable.

Large E-commerce (not Wordpress / wix and the like) / ERP's and system integrations would be more comparable.

There are Indians who shits out WordPress websites for $20. You don't want to compete with them.
Go for Big Data and Machine Learning and you'll be in high demand anywhere in the world.

I'm currently an intern as a backend php dev in a moderately big company with lots of funds.
It pays quite well and it's fun for a bit.
But I have to work on a shitty stack because no one cares, they just want their fucking paycheck.
Also, the job consists of coding the same things again and again basically. And you don't have to think that much, you just spit out that shitty buggy code.
