    Why would you use SMS anyway?

    @RememberMe diccrod is gaye and doesn't like not kicking me from calls after the 4 minute mark
  • 2
    @Parzi SMS would kick you from calls too if it could
  • 5
    @RememberMe your mother. And mine too.

    @RememberMe whenever you're from BFE you don't get a very good internet connection 2/3 of the time.

    Shit I've been through places so small before I didn't get a signal at all. Like no calling, texting or internet.

    @RememberMe @Stuxnet
    But wait, here comes Unify! *ducks

    @Stuxnet the struggles of sending emails over modern BBS on a real 800 baud line
  • 1
    @Parzi there's actually a local company running fiber through a large chunk of my bfe hometown.

    They're legitimately fixing to have a better internet than I have and that's some bullshit lol

    Speaking from one of those tiny towns in bfe. Signal is not that bad. At least not for as much as I've used it. iMessage is reliable most of the time, it does occasionally fail and revert to sms. Fuuuuuuuuuck discord. One out of three messages fail and it takes ten minutes to get a response back.

    @Stuxnet we're on mobile data OR 800 baud dial-up... but there's literally fiber running THROUGH MY FUCKING YARD that's "business-class only." They paid US for this and we can't use it.

    @Stuxnet BFE? Sorry, just arrived in the US, not familiar with that expression.

    Wow, that sounds terrible. I found it really surprising how common SMS, MMS (literally never used that before) and checks are here, they're fairly antiquated.

    @RememberMe
    "Bumfuck, Egypt."
    Old jingoism, but it checks out.

    Backstory?
  • 2
    @M1sf3t nah

    @RememberMe and yes it's bumfuck, Egypt. Just means middle of nowhere.

    And it's very common lol nobody uses WhatsApp, most people either use SMS or Facebook messenger (and ofc iMessage).

    I'll be glad whenever rcs is the standard and we can all just use that.

    @Stuxnet Riot or riot

    @Ranchu again, diccrod isn't always the best.
  • 1
    @RememberMe When you don't use mainstream messengers (like I don't use telegram and WhatsApp), sometimes plain old SMS is the best option :)
  • 1
    @M1sf3t Signal is the best IMO! Been using it for years and it only gets better 😄

    @linuxxx is SMS secure and private though? I really don't think so.
  • 1
    @RememberMe
    The odds of someone rolling around with a femtocell are pretty low, sms is fine for common message.
  • 1
    @SortOfTested but your phone has access to SMS data and I'm sure literally every company would be mining it (unless both parties are using a community ROM I guess). The whole point is to save your private data and metadata from companies etc.

    Eh, I guess you need to have *some* way to communicate with people who aren't on Signal etc., so yeah, SMS away.

    @RememberMe here that's everyone unless you wanna breakdown and use facebook. Ironically, for as paranoid and tech shy as people are around here, facebook is the one and only social/messaging platform that gets a pass.

    Same way with amazon and paypal, people will use them for shopping online yet everyone else's site is a scam and just looking to steal your card number. The only other exception to that being craigslist, I guess b/c there's not necessarily any funds being exchanged electronically.

    @RememberMe Definitely not as privacy friendly and secure. But rather that than using an app which advertises as secure and isn't or which is owned by a mass surveillance integrated company.
