I really think data science deserves its own course or programme of studies

Many schools are creating those disciplines. Some are just expanding their existing library sciences divisions.

a lot of schools do and have been doing it for a while as far as I am aware. Mine included.

We have a master's program for it at my uni

@Stuxnet do they have doctorate as well? if so, can masters in IT take it?

@AleCx04 here in my country, maybe in the metro cities. its not really in demand here yet, theyd rather outsource jobs like that. plus, were not an IT powerhouse yet. so lucky you! haha

That's funny because back at my uni we had a course called Data Science and it stood on its own.. We used SPSS, R and other tools.

@cuburt nah there's not even a cs doctorate, let alone a data science one.

But anyone can get into the data science program as long as they've had like 6 specific classes, if I remember correctly. However, it's usually math or CS majors.
