Then again, at the time of Einstein's discovery, dissertations were handwritten, or at best, typed on a typewriter.

Which font to best use to sell the discovery (i.e. how to visually appeal to the reader in the most effective way) would have been the typesetter's job.

And, let's face it, back in the day any publication in German would have been typeset in some Fraktur (blackletter) font.
