You know a good way to handle all of the issues with W10 force updating your system? Do it yourself FFS!

You know there are updates. Windows has been telling you ...

Pick a damn time, start the update and go get a coffee, lunch, take a dump or go home for the day.

It's *never* going to be the right time if you don't choose it. It will always be an inconvenience or you'll be "in the middle of something important" and then you'll get all pissy about it.

Yeesh ...

Or... set the damn system to stfu until you're ready to update. ^^

That is very grown up! (in a good way). But in win7 time I just went the "postpone until I really say ok" road anyway, as @KeyWeeUsr ;) (and I haven't touched windows since win7)

@KeyWeeUsr I always did but it's not possible in Win 10 after its anniversary update. An that's the point that I think @mhall does not know: it's not the fact that windows wants to install updates but windows just starts to update if you leave your PC to do something and you find your PC freshly rebooted with all previously open apps closed (all browser tabs gone, yay) or it's even still "configuring updates" and still booting...

@r4nter Isn't it possible through registry too? Or can't you turn off the Windows Update service manually? Sure there must be a way.

@KeyWeeUsr I'm pretty sure I could disable the whole update service but that would also force me to manually start looking (and remembering to look!) For new updates and they wouldn't be downloaded automatically and I couldn't just hit "install and shutdown" and go home but had to wait for the download to finish first.

I installed Linux half a decade ago, and I no longer get forced to do things at inconvenient times.

@r4nter I've got a couple of W10 pro machines that I use regularly ... Both have the anniversary updates and both nag me and warn me that updates are needed ...and that they're going to force a restart eventually ... I simply pick a time I'm willing to walk away and tell it to go ahead in do it.

Are you saying that there are machines that *don't* nag, but do it without any warning?

Cuz that would warrant a rant. :)

    So basically bend over, right?

I used to update when I shutdown. But now it's not possible because of the anniversary update. It's really stupid because my use of the computer can vary between 10 in the morning and 3am. I can only set it not to update for 12 hours? What was wrong with the old way?

@mhall yes, it's called win10, non-pro version. Home or what's its name now. Basically there isn't a straightforward option to disable the updates afaik, therefore I rather stay with win8 than experience this crap. I'm still on a very thin ice and today I was considering to put there Mint or Fedora the second time in this month, hehe.

And from what I hear or see on ocasional machines with win10, I haven't experienced so much forcing to do things before. Also it's even more annoying to turn the stupid or spying stuff off.

Windows likes Linux, yes... but probably Arch. (complicating stuff sometimes) :D
