Whats the big appeal of macs. I know there good for graphical use and social media but Linux looks just as good and it dosent cost a few thousand. And then there's windows.

For me it was the battery time, the touchpad and a usable UI with *UNIX under the hood (actually bsd based). Apart from that, other ultra books with similar specs and production quality aren't any cheaper. E.g. Dell XPS.

I have similar discussions all the time. People compare a Mac's price to maybe some $400, consumer grade laptop when they should be comparing them to either a Dell XPS, Dell Latitude, HP ProBook, etc. Then you'll see the prices are similar.

While my preferred OS I OpenSuse Linux, I'm saving up for a new MacBook Pro. I'll get some of the advantages of Linux plus I'll be able to install commercial software like Photoshop and Lightroom.

Sounds like bs, but you will only understand why people love Macs once you use it everyday.

@RichardH About the pricing I'd have agreed with you before watching the presentation today.
But you can't tell me that a starting price of 2000€ is reasonable.
An XPS 13 with comparable specs costs 700€ less, not to mention the Surface Book.

I like the new Macbook features, but this is crazy.

@deadlyRants I do like the glass part but damn a 15 inch 2400 for it stock. At the business I work at we have 4 hp pavilions (220 each at walmart) a and they run amazing even with a game like factorio or Minecraft running around 40-70 fps

@deadlyRants I just checked both Apple and Dell websites. At a quick glance, I see a Dell XPS 13 with an i5 8GB RAM and a 256GB SSD starting at $1,149.99 USD and on Apple's website, a 13" MacBook Pro with the same specs mentioned above starting at $1,499.00 USD. I didn't look any further if it's the same i5, resolution and quality of the display, battery life, construction, accessories such as a docking station or some form of that (I know there's one available for the XPS but I'm leery of it), your preference of the keyboard, your preferred OS, etc. I'm a hardware guy with a background in electronics. I work with a lot of Dell's (mostly the Latitudes). I'd prefer the Mac.

I should probably say that at the moment, I don't really have a really good computer. I bought a refurbished Dell Latitude E6420, upgraded the RAM to 8GB and installed an SSD drive. It's running Windows 10 and everything I do runs reasonably fast. So for me, even a base MacBook Pro without the touch bar would be more than fast enough and will likely last me several years so the investment wouldn't really be so bad for me. I do not want a new Windows 10 computer but I use Lightroom a d Photoshop for photography plus a few other applications so I can't really have Linux as my primary OS.

It's like Linux (Unix based), but maintained by people who actually get paid for it.

Take my word for it, once u go mac, u won't wanna go back.

For me it's the high quality apps you won't find on Windows or Linux.
But still, I pref my Xps 2016 over my mbp

@Ashuu lol? Name one and there'll be three alternatives on Win and 5 opensource for Linux. Itunes app doesn't count.

First that'll come to my mind is git tower (really far above the competition) but I saw yesterday it was ported on Win o/.
Still - and I don't want app that do the same thing, I speak about quality :
- Alfred
- dash
- parallels desktop
- Ulysses
- Tweetbot (yeah, it counts)
- Sketch
- keyboard maestro
- transmit (no, Filezilla is not even close :p)
- little snitch (if u find, I'd be glad :3)
- maybe even airmail

And if u find a tether like for Windows, it would be cool too :p

I find interesting:
- Alfred - I must admit, this one's really nice, but there are launchers on Win/Lin too with similar functionality. Without the search though, but it's mostly included in the OS already ^^
- Transmit - on Windows there's Total/Windows Commander, don't know about Lin, but it looks nice

Is on Win/Lin too:
- Dash(.org, right?)
- Parallels desktop as Wine/VirtualBox, but more extended usability
- Sketch - Adobe products(Lin with Wine), Gimp(+Inkscape)
- Ulysses - Google Drive(+ the rest of its Office and Notes)
- Airmail - Thunderbird
- Keyboard maestro - on Lin there are similar or better (with mouse, even gestures) features for the same behavior, not sure about Win, but there's probably something too

Can't find a real functionality of it:
- Tweetbot (no, it doesn't)

"tether" like for Windows, can't find it, too many "tether" noise around with apps, link?

Oh and the little snitch is nice too, on those I couldn't find an alternative that would do all the things in one app, yet there are apps that do a part of it :P

You have points with apps that could do suitable alternative, and that's a good thing.
But for example when I have to leave Parralels for Vbox or VMware players it's so clunky it's a disappointment evrytiem.
Another example Ulysses : ok I could use one note, or Simple note, etc, but as I write really often, it's not even close to the comfort I can get with Ulysses.

"It's so clunky" sure it is, it's the worst pain in the ass if it doesn't work ar you expect. On the other hand, if you set it right, you can do so much with it. If enough RAM, you can run multiple VMs, play with it and even test for minimal requirements your project is capable to run at.

One note/Simple note - no, no and no. I'm not talking about notes only. I talk about the whole office in your pocket - spreadsheets, presentations, word processor. Still I need to find out why it's sometimes slow for me, probably too much userscripts in the background. Works offline too :P

For Tether, ok, so it was the noise app (sorry, not sorry) :D for me it represents one of the most unsecure things in the world. Same as fingerprint scanners on smartphones and voice unlocking (or through assistant), therefore even that I know alternatives, I won't spread this trend of not caring about privacy and security. :)

@KeyWeeUsr I totally respect that, for Tether. And I'm nowhere near to use voice/fingerprint unlock too.
But it would be cool to be sure my laptop is locked when I leave it. (without the unlocking thing on the other way)

I guess I'm really bad with VirtualBox / VMware :/. So sad I can't have the seamless experience I get with Parralels.

@Ashuu not "bad", just not experienced enough. It's easy to get into when you're bored and want to choose a different Linux distro and with searching. I run 5-8 at once on my laptop with 1GB RAM just to experience the new environment.

Still partially on Windows, because games -_-
