I'm having a dilemma.

I currently hold a position as a Data Collector for one of the biggest tech companies around.

I have picked up a bit of programming by myself over the course of a year, hoping that I would have an opportunity to prove myself in said company for a more permanent position.

Thing is, I don't think they'll be able to take me seriously enough for a more technical position as long as I don't have a degree, which I don't.

So, I was thinking of pursuing a BSc in Computer Sciences, to increase knowledge and at the same time, increase my career prospects.

However, this means that I would have to leave the company, effectively giving up any footholds I have made there already.

Any advice?

You can go for online courses from Udacity, Edx, Coursera. It's not necessary you need a college degree in most of the cases

Speak to your boss about staff development/training They may be keen to help you or even finance it. At very least it shows you are willing and keen to progress in the company.

I would say, go to another company where they do take you seriously

@helloworld has the right idea; don't assume anything about the company, ask. Then if they don't take you seriously you can have further conversations about it and see if there's something you can do together or if you do need to take the nuclear option and move jobs.

As much as I hate coding boot camps, that might be the way to go. College degrees are worth less and less now.
