Something you don't want to see on anything that handles financial transactions: "not genuine"
-
osmarks8668yMy school has a bunch of TVs to display photos, brainwash students and that sort of thing, and I discovered that they ran Windows when one complained about a counterfeit Windows. Some also needed an Adobe Reader update, wanted to run Windows update, and often they say that they haven't been able to connect to some 'AJAX endpoint'.

Volume key activations made locally (with Microsofts licensing tools) instead of remotely, will usually expire in time if the computer does not "see" the internet for a period of time.
The restriction is there to prevent VLK-activated equipment from leaving the corporations ownership.
Since ATM computers are isolated for security reasons, the activation expire on them and show the not genuine mark.
Microsofts recommended solution for this is to place a pre-activated offline VLK-loaded KMS server inside the high security network. This requires however that there is at least 25 licensed devices inside the network segment. Purchasing 25 licenses are not enough, there must really be 25 devices who attempt to activate at the same time for the KMS server to start handing out activations.
If the ATM network isolate each ATM in one segment, theres no license solution, thus they run with expired activations. Propably they even have individual permission from MS to run this way.
