Today the Git for Windows updater asked if I wanted to let Git decide on the naming of my default branch... Hell no snowflakes!

I thought github wanted to change it, not git?

I'm sometimes wonder who else might be a snowflake, that so many are offended by a simple name change...

@sbiewald It's like giving someone a nickname and then calling them a pussy when they tell you their name, its' what a bully would say,

"You are such a snowflake it's just a nickname, it's not a big deal"

I used to be a bully and that's why I see this as bullying the only difference is I didn't pretend to be a sanctimonious asshole.

are you that bothered by it? even if it's something you don't think is important, you can just not care. by actively arguing against something, no matter if it's effective of not, implies you disagree with what it stands for rather than disagreeing with the measure itself
  • 1
@calmyourtities it's not the measure, it's the principle. Communism stood for a better society in theory, arguing against it because of its actual consequences isn't arguing against a better society m8.

@JKyll oh ok. so what actual consequences are there of renaming the master branch?
  • 2
@calmyourtities I guess you don't do do dev ops. Nevermind giving an inch so they can take a mile (they did it in movies, gaming, politics, etc) and if you are ignorant of all of this then I can only say to you, keep your politics out of my job.

@JKyll i have some experience in dev ops. if renaming a branch is going to break your system, you should probably get a new job. but either way, creating new projects with a different default branch name shouldn't require any effort to change.

@calmyourtities good 4 u, you may keep your ideology driven code and movement. Idc as long as it doesn't interfere with my life.

@JKyll I do devops. Anyone who thinks naming the default branch anything can cause problems doesn't understand git fundamentals. It's sadly common for people who use git every day to not understand it

@M3m35terJ05h looks like you've worked with well managed teams and projects. I'll refer to my previous comment. I don't bow down to morality policing doesn't matter how easy or hard it is.

@JKyll what drives you to rail so hard against this? Don't get me wrong, I think it's a half-assed measure that gives people the illusion we care.
But apparently there's enough people in the world who are genuinely hurt whenever they see the word "master" pop up from time to time in their terminals. Is it so bad you have to click through one more screen in an already overstuffed installation wizard? I could start the same rant about why people should just fucking learn Vim so finally we can skip the "what editor for commit messages" screen. All those other snowflake editors just make the job easier, that should not be the case right? This job should be a living hell right?

Just... What drives you man? What's so bad about it that you need to rail against it so hard? No critique, just honest interest and a bit of suprise.

@Lucky-Loek It’s that it’s pointless. It is moot. A shameless media grab at best, and trivial bike shedding for PC appeasement at worst.

And I’m a fucking lefty. I just marched with my wife and daughter last weekend, and I’ve been arrested for an act of civil disobedience in 2017... like uber lefty super woke sjw internet white hat hacking pro-socialism white knight level of lefty. Just insufferable.

And even for me this is just PR posturing bullshit that will have the sum practical effect of people intentionally naming their master, ahem, main branches to even more racist things because fuck the man.

I’m naming mine “Toby” for irony.

    Sup, Lavar Burton.

@Lucky-Loek the ones pushing for this don't care about you they just want to control you. As I said, want to bow down to them be my guest but I refuse to play these BS games. I know a bully when I see one.

@Lucky-Loek but that's the thing: there really *aren't* people actually hurt by the "master branch" terminology. It has been there for decades, yet people only now seem to notice?

This is pure virtue signaling by a small (but very vocal) group of people who think they are the saviours of the world by getting offended in the name of others (that actually don't have any issue with this).
