Is there a need to have archived backups even when you use source control tools?

    Git isn't a backup.

What happens when Git<insert flavour> decides to loose everything or blocks your country from accessing their servers?

If your running your own server, what happens if the disk break.

If running a cloud service, less risk since you have two copies but ic you get a virus that overwrites you local files or manages to access your repository.

I would have a backup just in case.

Having a backup on top of source control is like using a condom although your holiday affair is taking the pill. But your backup also protects your dick from rotting away, which is a good thing.
