It's called "using proven business models". There are 3 ways to make a startup:
- Cloning proven business models
- Localizing and adapting other startups
- Roll your own idea
Just because a platform is already made doesn't mean it's great. Learn from your user what they hate. It's basically free market research for you. -

Isn't the irony in this that Amazon's online shopping arm has never actually turned a profit? I was under the impression that, really, it's not a proven business model at all, or at least not by them...

Well simply put they found something the existing company was screwing up on and fixed it on their version. So they fixed it and told their competors that progress is a bitch and if you don't make it your bitch it will make you its bitch
