If you get fired, will that show up on background checks?

Generally "background checks" are about criminal activity and other information available, credit status, and etc.... that usually doesn't include being fired as most companies (at least in the US) don't go parading / sharing that kind of info.

In the US they just ask your former companies if you actually worked for them

I work at a recruitment firm, and we do background checks at work. Usually involves checking criminal records and economical status, just like @N00bPancakes said

Companies rarely volunteer that information either in case they get sued for defamation, so it's unlikely to be found out.

About the worst that can practically happen is your previous company refuses to give you a reference.

Depends on country. If you have worked in a country with strong employee protection/rights/unions you have to mess it up quite badly to actually get "fired". That can be a serious hole in your application, if not outright immediately disqualifying you.

Depends what you got fired for. If you work for Hersey’s and you were pissing in the chocolate vat then probably.

Although they’d probably pay you to keep quiet about it. I think I once ate a bar that you were involved with come to think of it...
