when the client treats your estimated time on a work as a deadline.. fucking hate it

    Estimates have a natural tendency to become deadlines if sales or marketing hears about it.

    Get it in writing. And when you say, "approx. 2 weeks", that could mean 1 or 5 weeks. If they bitch and moan about it resend them that e-mail, then charge them an admin fee for wasting your time lol

    I fought this one time. Hard. I would give short term estimates, and I was pretty good at meeting them, but I would refuse to estimate anything long term.

    Then my project manager started asking to "high-level estimates" stating we just needed a ballpark figure to plan out roadmaps, and literally said that it wouldn't be used as deadlines, that we would adapt to short term goals.

    Freakin'...

    Next day we get an email shared from the CEO about how in a few months (the low end of my ballpark estimate) the new software would be released.

    I don't know how to respond to people who want long term estimates anymore. Perhaps this comparison: "Wait, you want me to set the wedding date before we even go out?"
