I literally spend £27,000 on an education, and have to pay £100+ on Udemy just to get relevant information. The entire University syllabus is becoming a Legacy version!

I think PHP and MySQL are good introduction languages for people who's never programmed before.

Learn "how" to program. Languages does not matter.

They should start teaching php and MySQL beginning next semester.

It honestly doesn't matter what you learn in college because it will all be dead in a few years anyway. Hell, I learned struts and Swing on Java 1.4.2. What matters is you pick up the mindset to pick up new languages and technology.

Now what college didn't teach me was to think about writing maintainable code (a college semester is 5 months only...) or learning how to deal with ridiculous client requests.

i think is more important to theach software development patterns, source control, clients handling, networking, etc... This business is huge and if you focus only on programming and forget about everything else, youre gonna have a bad time...

I have read rants here that show you how good it is to learn PHP and MySQL compared to some other shit lecturers can come up with!
Although I don't particularly enjoy PHP, I do think every web dev should learn it simply because it what you can use on any shared hosting platform and it still powers most of the web. About MySQL, it is pretty powerful, and although mongo might look pretty cool, again, MySQL or SQL in general is what powers most of the web...
As far as we know node can die on the next few years, PHP might die but it will be slower since everyone's using it, so it does make sense for universities to go with the proven stuff that has been there for ages and is widely used
