Just had my last day at my current job last week. I got this amazing virtual card with 20-30 people telling me how amazing I was and how large of a difference I made. I’m not someone that seeks or needs validation, but to see those comments in writing really made me feel good and like I made a huge difference.

So the company I work for is moving to a new building. The project managers, who we do everything we do to avoid, are going to be on the same floor as us. The contractors, who we pay a crap ton of money to fly them in from halfway across the globe so we can work closely with them, are going to be 6 floors away.

Job description: designing and building microservices and API contracts for enterprise use. Deep understanding of api/rest design, AWS, etc.

Interview: in this weird IDE while I stare over you, go through and parse this multi-dimensional primitive array using recursion.

It’s funny being on the other side of interviews. People say how complicated it is to get a job, and it is. But then they show up to a third round Senior Software Engineer technical interview and is unable to write a function on the white board in any language or even pseudo code to reverse a string. That isn’t complicated stuff...

Argh, very frustrating.

Ugh all but one unit test is passing :-(. I know the code is working- so the problem must be in the test... [add @ignore to test]. Yay they all pass now!

When my idiot technical lead on the client’s floor (where everyone could hear him), “corrected” me in public telling me I should never use parent/child classes and override a method. Instead just use lots of if else statements in the one.

Not just is he a moron, but sounds like he knows what he is talking about if you are a client who knows nothing about coding. So I look like an idiot to our customers and he sounds smart... when it’s the other way around.

And HOW DARE you criticize anyone, even if it is warranted, in public in front of clients. You go in an office and close a door.

When I was new developer and accidentally did testing of an important internal business app on what I thought was dev but was actually production... and of course has entered some crude humor as data because it was "dev".

"Sweet, I fixed story 1 and can commit! ...but issue 2 is pretty small, let me just work on that first so there's 1 pull request".

4 hours later, issue 2 not done yet, and I can't push push story 1 to QA until I finish it. I really need to stop doing that.

Skipping jasmine tests- especially ones on partials (not the controller). Seriously, QA has automated test suites to test UI functionality. If it takes 30 mins to write the code and 3 hours to write the tests... it may just not be worth the effort when there already is automated testing.

Ugh I hate skipping them but you know how to test the UI? Use the UI.

My first job was through a technology "Graduate Training Program" at a large bank. We were sold on the job being told that there would be a month of corporate training before getting to work. You know, stuff like presentation skills and Myers Briggs and actual useful stuff. And yeah, they did have that for like two days of the month.

The rest was the most bullshit work to basically kiss-ass to upper management. Having to analyze their commercials and explain how amazing they were and why (they sucked). Explaining a portion of the business to upper management.. you know- the business they knew because they are executives in it- but it had to be "fun". We were stuck making board games and rap songs to these things to make an ass of ourselves in front of executives.

Then after that I was stuck working on VB6 programming with a Cobol mainframe backend. So fucking awful.

@DFox @trogus found a bug- not sure how easy it will be to fix... if you change your username, mentions in rants and comments still have the old username which will be confusing for people trying to figure out who the mention is for.

Is it possible that on editing a username, all mentions in all comments and rants are renamed as well?

My wife is a teacher doing a technology course that includes basic coding for middle schoolers (11-13 year olds). While she admittedly would make a terrible developer, she just spent her own money on 30+ finger puppets so the kids could practice rubber duck debugging. Maybe something did rub off on her!

You know, the whole AWS outage being caused by a typo while debugging got me thinking... whoever did that is most probably a developer who had a REALLY bad day. Could that person be on DevRant? Because the story of what the rest of that day and week was like for him or her has the chance to be the most epic rant on here ever. Poor guy/gal.

Do not steer away from projects using technologies you may not know or be comfortable in. Instead worked your hardest to get it right, ask lots of questions and don't be insulted if people find issues in your code. It's a learning experience.

Working from home. That time you spend commuting is spent on working. That random guy showing up at your desk breaking your concentration doesn't exist. If there's a bullshit meeting you have to go to, you can dial in, put yourself on mute and continue to work while listening and just unmute as needed.

Seriously so much more productive.

@dfox @trogus: feature request: is there anyway to store on my profile a list of recently viewed rants? It can be for private use only.

There have been a bunch of times that I will be viewing a rant, go into safari to grab a link or find a photo, just to go back to devRant and iOS has reset the app and I can't find what that rant I was looking at. It's really frustrating.

I know getting iOS to keep the app state may be difficult but storing a list of recently viewed rants, while not the simplest, I would think is straight forward.

Ok I need a second post for this week. A tech lead decided to have a one on one meeting with me in public on the clients' floor where he decided to get angry at me (in public mind you) about using too many design patterns and inheritance because that "makes the code too hard to read. Instead use a lot of if-else's like I do." So not just is he an idiot, he did this in public on a floor with people who didn't know programming so now I look awful. I was furious.

At a job ten years ago, I had a manager who thought it would be a good idea to lock us in a meeting room all day with a 45 page BRD reading it line by line and analyzing what each line means until everyone was on the same page.

Every time I do an agile project without a BRD I think of her.

Honest question:

For an open temp role, we are looking for someone that knows and used Angular 1.5 and ECMAScript 6.. yet everyone we have interviewed so far only knows up to Angular 1 and doesn't even know a new version of JavaScript came out, or have never used it before.

Are we really asking too much for someone interested in a temp role or are we just getting unqualified candidates?
