I did the startup life once in Cincinnati. I remember reading Paul Graham's post on "The 18 Mistakes That Kill Startups" and we were doing at least 1/3 of them. Our principal investor was a Steve Job's wannabe moron who couldn't make a product to save his life.
I took of for Australia and worked remotely for them for a while until they fired me and got some former Amazon guy to rewrite everything I did in Scala in Java for some reason.
I doubt I'll do startup life again, but I'm glad I experienced it once. -
ars140633yThey can be fun if the CEO is not an asshole. Very hard thing, as most CEOs are absolute cunts by nature, but sometimes you can find good ones. If you're in charge of the tech stuff you get the chance to architect things your way, which can be both scary and fun. Get a proper agile workflow going and you won't feel stressed.
Rare, but possible. -
@solex the sTaRt uP cUlTuRe iS cOoL trend is coming to a realisation that working at a start-up can be a nightmare and the what's even worse is that startups have rigged the saalry game so much that there is a huge unbalance in the ecosystem and that will collapse the corporate culture sooner or later.
But yes, we'll be able to keep our investors happy. -
Choose your company wisely. I have experienced working in a startup and I won't do that ever again. Well if you compare hell in a big company than in a start up then hell in a big company is nicer.
Big companies have lots of money to burn than start ups. -
I’ve worked for small companies but never a start up and I don’t think I ever will.
Yeah they tend to have less bureaucracy than big companies but probably more office politics(?).
And yeah, you get to have experience doing everything instead of being pigeon holed, but the trade off is the high pressure environment and never really being off the clock.
And you can get that in some other more stable companies if you’re lucky
The startup exists to turn someone else’s dream into a reality so it just doesn’t seem worth it to me. -
Whoever are done cursing startups .. try working in a big big IT service company .. bureaucracy and politics sucks harder than coding like hell .. changing requirements .. nit supporting startups .. but mid level companies are best to work for.

Yeah true talk, I can't deny that my performance and experience grows rapidly but like you said the pressure never makes me see it.
Working at a start-up company and i must confess its blood sucking like you've got some vampires sucking life out of you. I have to work like a donkey or camel and sometimes feel like am right in the middle of hell , lots of requirements, changes, fixes, updates, and more products stuffs that pissed you up, I don't know what am feeling right now but I only know am coding and have to take some shit feelings out!!!!
