Lead dev walks in:

"Remember what I said about doing dumb shit solutions in languages that no one understands?"

Me: "Yes.....why?"

Him: "That reporting script you did for <x department> needs some modifications and you decided for whatever fucking obscure reason to do it in perl"

Me: "I felt......experimental"

Him: "Well yes, that is cool and all but it needs some modifications as per <X director> and only your dumbass knows perl because you are just too fucking cute aren't ya?"

Me: "You think I am cute??? <insert spongebob blushing meme>"

Him: "I fucking hate it when you write shit in perl"

In my defense, it was a really short fucking script

For clarification: This was a friendly convo even though it doesn't sound like it. He is actually my employee, and a rather close friend, so there is that level of trust and comraderie

    I'm pretty sure he posted this same experience on devRant, from his perspective

    Fuckin perl.
    "write once, never look at it again"

    @magicMirror The legacy of Perl lives on in C++ where they combined the readability of the source code with the memory safety of C.

    @eo2875 awesome. Share link.

    I love this sort of camraderie.
    And I also love Perl. So yeah fuck him (but gently).

    @Fast-Nop 😂
    C++ is doing fairly better in both readability and safety. What's with the facetiousness?

    @anux C has an obfuscated code contest. C++ doesn't because it would be trivial. :)

    I can't blame him, if no one can write Perl at $JOB, please stop using it.

    Also, we're in 2021.

    C++, the ultimate scripting language.

    Ye, boi! Perl!

    Perl...you should feel bad because you should feel bad. ;-)

    I had a Perl codebase I was maintaining. I hated and avoided it.

    @atheist just why? That's even worse than Perl

    @molaram Microsoft is there to help you. Wait until critical infrastructure comes down because they're running important shit on a game starter OS. It's only a matter of time.

    @Fast-Nop Abort, Retry, Fuck You...

    @atheist sign me in 🙋‍♂️

    Can we just start with burning epicenters that originate spam? I am okay with losing a few countries or cities to this.

    @Fast-Nop reminded me of the brief and mostly inaccurate history of programming languages.

    @anux it is pretty fun, makes for a more relaxed environment. I have 0 issues with my guys due to the level of trust we have on one another. Even if for whatever reason we need to do something over the weekend, it is usually a very chill thing and no one ever says no out of contempt or anything like that. Definitely a relaxing environment.

    @molaram its pretty awesome right? makes for a more chill environment

    @8lall0 how about no

    @Demolishun i regret nothing :P

    might have been a joke, but there's probably some truth to it... gotta play along, otherwise people won't want to play with you

    @darksideofyay nah I know my boy, if he has an issue with me or anyone he says it to them directly. This was a very relaxed talk. He even sat down to help me finish the program since he also knows perl, just prefers to write things on other languages.

    I felt...

    ... experimental

    Oh, Perl. The flagship of its own category of “write-only” languages.

    @kiki for lame ass developers indeed. Perl can be written in a very legible way when people are not trying to be cute about it.
