Screw Scrum, screw it very much. Is it a task or a story? Oh let's make it a story to track points. What are points, really? *20 minute grilling always follows* Well they're kind of a roundabout way of talking about time without talking about time, mkay? But last time 2 points took you a day, what gives now? What do you mean points are for internal use, but how will management plan ahead for next quarter? Ok, let's mix in all those new people, and propotionately bump the expectation for the sprint, mkay? Yeah, they did 34 points per sprint over there, we'll just add those in. Oh, and by the way, after the 4-day estimation session we had where everyone was seizuring, I scheduled us at 645 points for the coming quarter, mkay? Don't worry, I added 15% for the "unexpected dtuff" so you're safe. Fuck you scrum, scrum-fall, whatever you are. Lost a dev lead role once for being honest about it after a year with a team that loved me, and projects completed more or less on time. Been reconsidered for a dev lead role for being honest about it in another place. Somebody else peddle this kool-aid, this one prefers a walk-on role in the wall to a lead role in the cage.

Maybe the problem is not scrum. Maybe the problem is that your team/company doesn't respect its principles and expect it to work anyway.

@willol it sounds like the old defense about psychoanalysis - if it ain't working, you're doing it wrong. I've been to enough agile/scrum/scrumfall shops to get a feel of how people seem to be using it in practice. Perhaps the answer is in shop+1, but I deeply suspect it's akin to the king's new clothes.

@Re-cursing well, my company swear by agile and scrum. We work exclusively with it, even our internal processes are agile.
I won't say it's the magic solution to everything, but I observe that it works *freaking* well, our clients are very happy, the projects are successful and we are growing like crazy.
So, I'll stand by my ground that scrum well done is working pretty well ! But it really asks to adhere to the philosophy

@willol I'm really happy for you then, honestly I am. Maybe the issue really is about management both trying to have and eat the cake. Shop+1 it is then, and as for me, it'll be a search for effective product management.

@Re-cursing yup, I understand that management can be a real problem! For info, our approach to that is to not have management. There's scrum masters, there's people handling staffing (which are also SM), people handling administrative stuff (and are also SM), people handling financial and strategic stuff (which are not all SM, but are deeply involved in lean and agility). But nobody's nobody boss and our goals are common :) that's probably the philosophy that makes everything work

I hope you'll find a company that suits you anyway! At least there's a lot of choices in our industry
